What do normal sized people eat?

Posting for traffic and I'm being deadly serious.

Always had issues with food (abusive childhood and neglect started it I think)

I'm on a weight loss journey, doing well.

What do people normally eat? Those who are average sized and not gaining weight?

I feel like my portion sizes are insanely large but I also don't know what people would eat for lunch and stuff? I feel like porridge, sandwich, crisps, fruit and then tea (dinner) would be a lot of calories for me.

No breakfast ever

salad with chicken falafel or tuna for lunch

proper dinner eg spag bol, chili, risotto

snacks - raw veg or a couple of rich tea fingers / a less than 100 cal snack

crisps on a Friday and Saturday evening

size 10 and age 50

Very little of everything they want.
Very little.
Physical exercise.

Hasn't this thread shown you that this is far from the truth?

MoonBuggyBugBug · 01/06/2024 20:47

I haven’t eaten dinner for the last year. It has been the best I can’t believe the energy I have even with a toddler. I have a good appetite for breakfast and lunch and load up then.

BakedTattie · 01/06/2024 20:49

I’m so glad I’m not some of the people on here 😂

I actually enjoy all vegetables so I eat at least 5 a day every day.

I don't eat any fruit or any sweet food really bar the occasional dessert but even then it's rare and minimal. I have been known to split a slice of care with my other half as I won't finish a full one. I don't really like sweet things. I don't put sugar in tea of coffee either or drink any sweet or fruit flavoured drinks. I drink black coffee and herbal tea mostly so I don't tend to drink my calories.

I skip breakfast every day because I'm not hungry when I wake up and if I eat in the morning I feel hungry and kind of rotten all day.

I sometimes just have vegetables in miso broth for dinner, a few nights a week. Maybe with a couple of eggs. I like soups and other light foods.

On other days I'll eat whatever I want eg vegan burger and chips or pizza. I don't have to worry about portion size really as I measure my calories over a week not a day so I've pretty much always got some spare. I find fibre keeps me full for longer than protein so I tend to eat a high fibre diet.

I exercise a lot. Do yoga a lot (advanced yoga). I walk everywhere I don't drive to the shop, I walk because I like it even if the weather is rough. No excuses. I walk my dog. I run sometimes.

Eh?
This is what I have to do, to remain "normal" size at 45, while managing an underactive thyroid.
Obviously everyone is different.
Oh, and no booze after 40. 😁

You said "Very little of everything they want." so I thought you were talking about how everyone who is a healthy weight eats.

You have now explained you were talking about yourself.

RM2013 · 01/06/2024 20:56

I have a BMI of 25 so I’m fairly average. I do have a difficult relationship with food and I can binge and overeat easily if I don’t rein myself in.
on a typical day I’d eat

breakfast - overnight oats (made with plain oats, Greek yoghurt, raspberries and a splash of honey

lunch - chicken, ham or tuna salad with some fruit or soup and fruit. Occasionally I have a roll but try to limit how much bread I eat

dinner varied but try and eat fairly healthy

try not to snack on crisps, chocolate and biscuits as this is my downfall

weekends I usually relax my eating

I track my food on MyFitnessPal as it helps me see when I’m not eating enough or too much

Girloutdoors · 01/06/2024 16:30

I'm probably a very average weight. BMI of around 21.

I eat porridge 40grams with semi skimmed milk topped with berries. The plain porridge oats not the syrup sachets.

Lunch - a bread roll with chicken/salmon/cheese/egg and salad and a yoghurt

Dinner - something like chicken breast with rice and veg, a baked potato with cheese and beans, a homemade curry, a roast dinner. I don't have big portions.

Greek yoghurt with berries and nuts for dessert

Don't really snack but if I do it's a handful of nuts, a slice of toast, some fruit and Greek yoghurt.

This is like my diet & I'm 3 st overweight.

It's so frustrating.

Lilmaubetden · 01/06/2024 21:13

Breakfast - nothing
Lunch - nothing
Snacks - nothing
Dinner - 100g of sweet potato fries, 4 onion rings, one brioche roll with some M&S spicy pineapple chutney and two mini chicken fillets in it, with about 10 slices of cucumber and a tomato. Then because I’ve been good, I have a M&S chocolate tiffin or a pineapple tart for dessert.

Which is why there is SO much more to our size, weight, and what our bodies need.
You have to look at height, build, exercise and general daily movement, sleep, hormones, weight history, underlying medical conditions.

mumzof4x · 01/06/2024 21:36

Eggs or high protein homemade soup for brunch around 12-2
At least 4 big mugs of tea before with semi
Dinner usually chicken or fish with green veg or rice
Usually have pre dinner nibbles .... homemade dio or hummus with veg to dip
Red wine
Maybe cheese and port if a weekend

Jojobees · 01/06/2024 21:43

I have a bmi of 23, wear a size 10 so pretty average sized I’d say.
weekdays I eat breakfast usually toast with either jam or marmalade or a croissant with jam.
lunches are varied from omelettes, salads sandwiches or jackets
standard family dinners, chicken fish pasta curries stir fries bbq etc
I have a sugar in my coffee and milk.
I drink water, and occasionally a fizzy drink,
I am active but I don’t go to the gym or do any sort of organised exercise.
I would say it has to be genetic as a work colleague eats similar to me and is very overweight

Justleaveitblankthen · 01/06/2024 21:47

A handful of nuts this morning (Pecans, Almonds, Walnuts & Brazils) then, just realised.. A massive Mumsnet salad for me' Tea 🥗😂
Added king size prawns, eggs & Mozarella.

This evening watching Netflix, a large box of strawberries, 2 clementines and a glass of ice cold filtered milk 🥛😋

Differentstarts · 01/06/2024 22:51

Diet and exercise is only a part of what determines peoples weight. I tend to find the bigger issue is metabolism, age, medication and medical conditions for e.g. hypothyroidism, pcos. I was always skinny could eat what ever I wanted. I now eat about a quarter of that and am double the weight.

AllTheChaos · 01/06/2024 22:59

Late 40s, BMI is 17. Yesterday was a pretty average day food wise, so I will detail it here:
Breakfast: smallish bowl of porridge with berries;
Midmorning: two slices of dark rye bread with a little bit of butter (the really dark bread that is full of seeds, and quite small);
Late morning: an orange;
Lunch: bowl of homemade vegetable soup;
Midafternoon: half a bar of dark chocolate (about 30g);
Late afternoon: one egg, scrambled dry (no milk, butter, oil etc);
Dinner: home made vegetarian spag bol (no cheese);
Late evening snack: half an avocado on half a slice of lightly buttered sourdough toast;
Pre-bed snack: half a banana.
Ive had a look at calorie counters and depending on which I use (and given I didn’t weight anything I ate), it looks to be 1,400-1,400 calories.
Edited to add: I don’t have milk or sugar in my tea, and other than tea I only drink water. In the summer I do make fruit smoothies as snacks though.

TheSilentSister · 01/06/2024 23:00

56, size 12/14 - today was very bad - ham sandwich, a few chips pinched off my DS, a whole camembert with half a french stick and a bottle of red. I've drunk several cups of tea during the day. This is not typical/every day but I just eat what I want. I could do with losing weight but it's not that bad enough to do anything about it.
I cycle or walk a fair bit and have done so all my life.
I listen to my body when it comes to food. Some days I crave oranges or any citrus fruit and will eat several at a time.
I often do 24hr fasts if I feel I've over indulged or just miss my evening meal.

I did SW several years ago and it was very good. It would be my 'go to' if I ever wanted to lose more than a stone. It really resets your way of thinking about food and cooking more healthy home meals. For instance, I stopped going and following the 'plan' and didn't gain any weight for a good year or so.

Octomingo · 01/06/2024 23:01

Bmi 22 or 23
Yoghurt and muesli for breakfast.
Snide version of mini snickers or something at break.
Sandwich for lunch.
Tea: fish/ veg/ rice or filled pasta Or fishcakes and salad. Weekends are pizza/ burgers.

If I didn't have such a sweet tooth or like alcohol, I would be properly slim, rather than slim and squishy. I exercise, but I know it's not to lose weight.

AllTheChaos · 01/06/2024 23:05

1,400-1,500 that should say!

phonetedt · 01/06/2024 23:06

My diet used to be very poor and I went from a 10 to an 18, covered in cellulite and stretch marks and it is depressing me which is why I made this thread, I want to change my relationship with food (I'm an emotional eater)

I go to the gym 6 times a week which sounds a lot but because I'm so unfit I don't think I burn much. I'm not exaggerating when I say I can only run for 1 minute,

My TDEE is 1950 (I'm 5"2, age 37 and currently 15st 1)

I'm struggling to see how people can eat so much for small calories, like under 2000. I think i just don't understand portion sizes.

I agree. Sometimes I overeat by having a massive takeaway or pizza or whatever (food that’s generally designed to make you want to keep eating it…) but generally not. I think we’ve often lost sight of what a normal portion size looks like.

I agree. My portion size is the same as a child's portion in a restaurant. I always think an adult size portion is way too much. I eat whatever I want but in smaller amounts until I don't feel hungry anymore. I stop eating just as I start feeling a little bit full. I think best way to loose weight is to cut down portion sizes gradually

Mynaddmawr · 01/06/2024 23:13

Today was 2 weetabix, 2 crumpets, a banana, egg sandwich, veg pasta bake with asparagus and a big dairy milk bar. Yesterday was an orange, a baked potato with cheese and homemade coleslaw, red lentil veggie daal and rice.

My BMI is 19, I cook from scratch and mostly vegetarian so lots of veg and pulses. I will put my plate on the side to finish later if I feel full, hate forcing it down, my husband will eat until he's finished even if he then feels sick! I also don't drink alcohol. I do eat a shittonne of chocolate being honest, but I am very active (walking, running, cycling) and I rarely sit still at home. I think its mostly metabolism, at least for me, which I know I'm very lucky for- I do get spots though and have four fillings, so I'm not getting away scot free with the sweet tooth!

ManchesterGirl2 · 01/06/2024 23:14

Today:

Museli

Coronation chicken sandwich, apple juice, tomatoes, an apple

Chocolate fudge cake and ice cream (was out with friends, wouldn't generally have this at home)

Half a quiche with some olive-bread, a bit of cheese, a large salad and olive oil.

I have slightly gained weight recently, so am trying to reduce the cakes and chocolate and do a bit more sport. That usually sorts it out without any drastic action.

I size my portions just by how hungry I am.
