What do normal sized people eat?

phonetedt · 01/06/2024 16:23

Posting for traffic and I'm being deadly serious.

Always had issues with food (abusive childhood and neglect started it I think)

I'm on a weight loss journey, doing well.

What do people normally eat? Those who are average sized and not gaining weight?

I feel like my portion sizes are insanely large but I also don't know what people would eat for lunch and stuff? I feel like porridge, sandwich, crisps, fruit and then tea (dinner) would be a lot of calories for me.

I don’t think of myself as normal, but I have a bmi of 21 and a typical day would have

breakfast
bowl of porridge, made with whole milk, flaxseed, fruit and berries. Half a smoothie (dd’s leftover breakfast) and a handful of whatever fruit is going in lunch boxes that day.

lunch
omelette - 2 eggs, cheese, ham, spinach with brown soda bread.
Or, baked potato with cheese and beans,
Or, wholemeal wrap with ham, pickles and spinach
Or, egg salad sandwich on wholemeal bread with small salad.

dinner
spag bol with green salad
Or, chicken curry and rice
Or, lentil/chickpea curry and rice
Or, roast chicken, gravy, with veg, and potato
Or, spaghetti carbonara (egg, cheese, bacon) and salad
Or, bacon, cabbage, potato, white sauce.
or, poached salmon with stirfry and rice or salad and brown bread.

If I’m peckish I’d have cheese and crackers, yogurt and fruit, hummus and carrots, or just an apple or banana.

Ordering a carvery or takeaway, I’d only manage 2/3 at most. I drink a lot of water and black tea, and walk about 7.000 steps. I have a 12hr fasting window.

The only thing I actively avoid is obviously processed sugar foods (cake/icecream/chocolate) because even a small amount gives me cravings that last for a couple of weeks and it’s easier to just avoid it altogether. I eat red meat occasionally but just not a fan.

My diet is a bit low in iron and calcium so definitely not ideal.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 01/06/2024 18:46

I've not read all the rest, sorry, but I'm 5 foot 8, 8 stone 10 ish and 54. This is my week in terms of meals and fitting in vegetables: I make a vegetable stew of a whole head of celery, load of carrots, several leeks onion, whole thing of mushrooms. Chop up. Flour and milk, lots of spices. Two sliced potatoes on top. Cook 40 minutes. Makes four meals.

I've been the same weight all my adult life, sole parent, worked full time throughout. No maintenance (all cheap food).

CharlotteBog · 01/06/2024 18:46

I am the low end of the healthy BMI at 5'8".
I am very active (run, cycle, swim, strength stuff and always walk as if I'm fleeing a fire), but I also have a desk job.
I have no idea how many calories I consume.
My diet is a bit chaotic and I'm kind of dreading DS2 leaving home as I will have no reason to cook meals and will graze.
I eat slowly compared to others (not consciously) and do not have large portions (again, not consciously, it's just what I want).
I do think I naturally compensate for eating more than I need one day, by eating less the next - or over the course of a week I think it averages out.

ManilowBarry · 01/06/2024 18:53

Small portion sizes works for me and decreasing as you get older.

I still have all the enjoyment of the tastes that I like but in a small amount.

I am also very active.

Thanks everyone

Yes by normal I mean healthy weight.

I'm wondering how does anyone eat a takeaway and still not gain weight? Even if I eat healthily all week, a Chinese takeaway is definitely more calories than I need! Do you just eat even better the next week?

I think my portions are definitely the issue too

I love a Chinese but I do do some damage limitation…

I stay away from the prawn crackers, or just have two or three if I really fancy them. That’s my easy win.

I have a favourite king prawn dish with ginger and spring onions. Actually salt & chilli squid too. Seafood tends to be lower in calories, so I eat more of this and less of the other dishes like crispy beef.

We have the plain rice rather than fried and I’ll have a relatively small portion, about a third of the container.

We also get beansprouts as a ‘healthy’ side.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/06/2024 19:15

Less, they just eat less.

Southlondoner88 · 01/06/2024 19:17

For me it varies, cut out deep fried food, if getting a takeaway get something grilled/ boiled instead of fried. Crisps are also fried, try stop eating them as they are empty calories, you could always try popped chips but they aren’t the best either, no fizzy drinks, limit sugary alcohol and beer/ cider, have a gin and diet tonic.

Ease on the carbs, it’s ok to have carbs but most of your plate should be filled with protein and veg not rice or pasta.

Sugary foods are addictive, try cut them out for a while and I guarantee you won’t enjoy them or crave them much anymore.

Eat when hungry only. Don’t skip any meals, always have high protein breakfast (high protein yoghurt, or eggs) so you won’t be tempted to binge by 11am.

Try exercise every day. Even just walking.

suntannedsnowballsinhellskitchensink · 01/06/2024 19:20

I'm 5ft 2, 7.5st, 34 year old mother of 2

I eat one meal a day

It works for me

BurbageBrook · 01/06/2024 19:22

I hover around 9 stone and am 5'7. For breakfast I have either scrambled eggs on a slice of seeded toast or peanut butter on two slices of toast. Then I have a banana after, whichever breakfast I choose. Mid morning I might have some fruit or sometimes I go for an early lunch instead. Tbh when I have eggs I definitely snack less. For lunch it really varies, if I'm being healthy then maybe a salad but more usually, leftovers, cheese on toast, mackerel on toast, something like that. I probably do eat too much bread. Usually end up having something sugary every day which I am trying to cut down on, like I might have a chocolate bar in the afternoon. Dinner is our healthiest meal, we usually have meat or fish or a vegetarian meal including at least three vegetables. I have a lot of coffees with milk as well throughout the day. A couple of times a week I'll also have a glass of wine in the evening.

Springadorable · 01/06/2024 19:24

I'm typically around 70kg and 5'8" (BMI around 22 ish). For this I have:

Breakfast: Shreddies (a big bowl, about 500 calories)
Lunch: frozen pizza or toast or a sandwich, it varies between 400-1000 calories I'd say
Dinner: two fish cakes and roast potatoes and peas would be typical. Ben and Jerry's for pudding.

To be 10kg lighter but not losing I had to have two apples and a satsuma for breakfast, salad with low fat dressing for lunch, and then casserole or stir fry for dinner.

DaisyCat33 · 01/06/2024 19:26

Breakfast - bowl of cereal with milk (if I have it, I often don't eat breakfast)

Lunch - a roll with ham & salad, or sometimes I have fruit toast with peanut butter. Usually have fruit and a yoghurt with it.

Dinner - usually something like spaghetti bolognaise, cottage pie, chilli, chicken curry... All home cooked

Maybe an ice cream for dessert. Or some chocolate.

I'm a size 12. I think I must eat fairly small portions, as I do eat junk food. I just stop eating when I'm full. Sometimes I skip meals because I don't feel like it, and just eat a few carrots and some hummus or something instead. Just very much base my eating on how hungry I feel, rather than just eating because it's time to eat.

Thevelvelletes · 01/06/2024 19:28

Dust.... sorry couldn't resist.

PeonyAndBlushSuede · 01/06/2024 19:28

Mumsnet is the worst place on the internet to get advice on food and eating.

This place is full of idiotic competitive under-eaters. It’s vile.

You are best asking a qualified dietician or personal trainer. As everybody is different, with different circumstances and lifestyles.

FiveTreeHill · 01/06/2024 19:31

I'm a healthy weight BMI 23/24, I'm 5'8.

What I eat daily varies massively. For breakfast I would usually yoghurt and fruit or a slice of toast and peanut butter. Lunch would be some form of protein on toast, fruit, salad bits and usually a proteiny snack like a boiled egg or some cheese. But sometimes it's a salad, sometimes it's soup. Sometimes a sandwich

Dinners again vary a lot. Some days I'll have a salad or fish and new potatoes. Some days I'll have a pizza.

I normally have a small amount of chocolate after dinner, I don't snack a lot otherwise. I walk an average 10000 steps a day and go to the gym twice a week.

I eat out probably one lunch and one dinner a week and maybe a takeaway once a month. I too would be starving and pretty bored, on the amounts many eat on MN

FiveTreeHill · 01/06/2024 19:32

Also I do eat quite a few crisps, so actually saying I don't snack is a lie. I would maybe have a packet every other day

AlexiaH · 01/06/2024 19:33

I’m an average weight and height, size 10. I used to be crisp mad but as I’ve got older I’ve cut them out to a weekend treat only. They’re too moreish, high in sat fat AND the prices/quantity you now get is ridiculous so it’s helped me alot. £2.85 for a 6pack of walkers and the bags are 25g now and not 33g AND they contain a child size portion and the rest of the bag is fresh air. Lol daylight robbery! Weight watchers plan says eat as much fruit as you like to snack on etc but I’ve always been told it cab have the opposite effect as it’s still full of natural sugar. Best thing to do is move more! Have a walk after dinner, buy a floor plate treadmill(without the handles etc) I bought one from Amazon fairly cheaply and it’s amazing. Been a lifesaver during the winter when Ive zero motivation and was working remotely

SilentSilhouette · 01/06/2024 19:36

@phonetedt The first thing you need to do is estimate your energy output based on your activity level.

I am 5'10 and mid 40s but do a LOT of sport so eat quite a lot. I'm 10 stone.

Breakfast: 4 tbsp natural yoghurt with granola. Juice.

Lunch: 4 slices of baguette (small) with pâté, grapes, and 2 nectarines.

Dinner: lamb and spinach curry with rice (home made) a bowl full (would fit in my hands)

Snacks: none! Never. I don't snack as I'm too busy.

Drinks: coffee (Black and no sugar), water and I'll have a large glass of wine later.

I've done about 18,000 steps including gardening and an hour of kick boxing.

Workhardcryharder · 01/06/2024 19:37

Breakfast I’ll have oats with grated carrot, berries, yoghurt, honey and biscoff spread or some chocolate on it,

lunch I’ll have a burger, homemade, maybe some
homemade coleslaw, or veg,

dinner I’ll have a bowl of pasta, 75g, whatever sauce I have made

then another small bowl of oats to satisfy cravings in evening.

I eat all the things I enjoy, just smaller portions than I’m used to or I’ve found a way to make it healthier

Southlondoner88 · 01/06/2024 19:39

OP please don’t listen to people saying they only eat one meal a day, that is an eating disorder even if they maintain an OK ish weight, it’s still restricted eating, don’t do that. A dietician would be a good idea, make sure they are not a nutritionist, a dietician will use evidence based information. Don’t diet or restrict food.

Gall10 · 01/06/2024 19:39

Grilled Halloumi and veg skewer (peppers, tomato, red onion) green salad, beetroot hummus.
Kids will add pitta bread and lamb fakeaway
Yogurt with mango
Loads of tea.
Glass of white wine.

BonkersBeanhead · 01/06/2024 19:39

Size 8, 5 ft 3 about 8 1/2st. A typical day I have 2 slices of seedy toast with butter and either peanut butter and marmite/scrambled eggs, lunch either a salad with meats and cheeses/big sandwich with salad on/small portion of leftovers, maybe a chocolate biscuit in the afternoon and for dinner a full meal eg curry, rice and naan/chicken stroganoff rice and veg/lasagne, salad and garlic bread. I cook from scratch most days which helps.

Size 8, 5'3 tall, 8.5 stone. I always have 3 square meals a day + snacks. What I ate today:
Breakfast: scrambled eggs (1 whole egg + 40g egg white from a packet), half avocado, goats cheese (about 30g), slice of sourdough toast, butter.
Lunch: turkey breast strips in tomato sauce, 70g (dry weight) pasta, tablespoon of grated cheese.
Dinner: takeaway burger with sweet potato fries.
Snacks: banana, nectarine, 2 hobnobs.

Walked 15k steps with the dogs, spent afternoon gardening (lugging water cans with diluted plant feed). I think I will have a beer now as well.
