I want to go a pearl ash silver colour.

No hairdresser can do it! I’ve come out of a 6 hour session with Barbie blonde hair!! Again!! I do not want this colour. I’m about to walk into Boots and buy a brown box dye I’m so fed up.

This is what I got and the other photo is what I want! (I know she has extensions in). But I’m so fed up and sat in my car crying.

It looks amazing!!

I wanted to move to more silvery blonde for years OP, and it was a long journey. Finally I'm with a hairdresser now who has managed to nail the colour (over time) with foils and a silver toner.

Fanola no yellow shampoo is brilliant at toning down warm tones quickly though

This is the end result. It started as so much warmer and golden

Highlift tints often have 11.xx and 12.xx on the tube but that's not related to actual hair colour because you can't really go lighter than a 10. If you leave the bleach on too long, the outer cuticle layer that's protecting the hair shaft will start to disintegrate.

Colour training refers to lifting hair to a level 10 and looking like the inside of a banana peel. So very pale but still having a hint of yellow tone.

You need to tone it twice because first you neutralise the yellow on the first pass and then re-tone it with a purple based tint to get the ash grey tinge. You do need to be a confident colourist because the purple can look a bit shocking before it's rinsed off.

You can use a purple toner at the basin to neutralise the yellow before applying your preferred toners.

If you're not getting what you want you're probably best to book in with a senior or the most experienced colourist. Some hairdressers don't bother to take additional classes after completing their level 3 but those that have will rave about them if they've done say a Master level Colorist course.

My last hairdressing appointment I asked for blonde the same colour as my ends (it was completely blonde) and I asked that they add some lowlights to the highlights so that when it grew back it was not all blocky.

The hairdresser suggested a silver toner and root fade and I knew what this was and said yes.

The hairdresser did foils in a technique they used to do in the 90’s (not what I asked for) but instead of blonde there were big thick stripes of brown. The blonde was yellow/orange and the brown lowlight was darker than my natural colour. There was no root fade. The colour looked blocky at the root and the root fade colour was taken the entire length of my hair to cover up the fact that a lot of my hair was orange.

I sat in my chair and said to the lady blow drying my hair “is my hair brown?” (Keep in mind my ends were originally very blonde - probably barbie blonde when I came in). The lady said “it looks blonde to me”. And I felt myself shaking. It was so dismissive.

By the time I went to pay I was so upset. I ended up crying in frustration and said “this is not what I asked for - it looks so 90’s and I’m absolutely drenched” (the person who rinsed my hair didn’t bother rinsing the back of my hair and I had to ask her repeatedly to rinse out the product & I ended up soaking wet”.

The manager suggested I come take a seat because it was clear when I booked in this was not what I asked for but I didn’t have any time and my hair couldn’t handle more bleach.

She ended up comping my colour - I was fully prepared to pay over $400. Now I feel guilty even though it’s clear they F’d up.

Under the bathroom lights my hair had red and green tones.

This is a picture of a cross section of my “blonde hair”. The photo doesn’t show the dye that was on my face and my hairline. I ended up with dye all over my pillow and washed it out the next day.

When I wear it out it’s mostly just a brown colour. I’m so embarrassed wearing it out and when I find a new hairdresser I will have to pay for a colour correction.
