Can I avoid a&e with this?

Anyone got any advice please? Took the kids to the trampoline park on Thursday and midway through, jumped off a high platform onto a trampoline but landed badly and twisted severely. The swelling came up within less than a minute and the pain made me think I would throw up! I’ve never broken a bone before so have no previous knowledge. But I really do not want to sit in a&e for hours and hours to be told it’s just a sprain.
Anyone for any knowledge please? It’s still so painful and swollen 2 days later 😢

YABU - don’t go
YANBU - go to a&e

Can I avoid a&e with this?

Unfortunately nobody on MN has X-ray vision, which is the only way to tell.

TeaKitten · 01/06/2024 12:01

Has it suddenly gotten worse? If it has (I’m assuming so because you didn’t visit your GP yesterday) then I’d phone 111 for advice, or go to minor injuries if you have one

ShinyBandana · 01/06/2024 12:01

You need an xray. Have you got a walk in centre nearby? If not then it’s an A&E job.

TheChosenTwo · 01/06/2024 12:01

Oh ouch!!! That looks incredibly painful, we can’t see through skin, I think it would be wise to get a professional opinion. No one relishes the idea of spending 20+ hours in A&E (our wait time last week according to a colleague who went in with what she didn’t realise was double pneumonia) but they are there to help in situations like this so please do go.

loudbatperson · 01/06/2024 12:02

I would try to find a minor injuries or urgent care center instead of possible.

Does look like it should be evaluated.

Springchickenonion · 01/06/2024 12:02

Yeah I would go to minor injuries.

bluecomputerscreen · 01/06/2024 12:02

you need an xray to check for broken bones.
in some areas minor injuries would deal with this kind of injury. in others it's a&e.

Cinai · 01/06/2024 12:03

Walk-in might work. I had a similar swelling recently, went to A&E and got an x-ray done, in the end I just got sent home with painkillers because no bone was broken, but you need yo find out one way or another.

K0OLA1D · 01/06/2024 12:07

I wouldn't go to A&E if I had a minor injuries. If not then it would have to be.

CerealPonderer · 01/06/2024 12:08

There's every liklihood it's a sprain. The pain, bruising and swelling I experienced when I sprained my ankle was x 10 of that when I'd broken my ankle a few years previously.

My broken ankle healed in 8 weeks and by week 10 I was completely symptom free. No physio needed. My sprained ankle took 14 weeks to be 95% resolved - but I continued to get 'twinges' in that ankle if I bent the wrong way for about 3 years. Even after physio.

So a sprain ime can be worse than a break - but saying that, clearly no one here knows and there's only one way to be sure which you have.

Demelzatheredhaired · 01/06/2024 12:11

Call 111 and ask about minor injuries/a&e for this situation in your area. If you get lucky maybe they’ll be able to make you an appointment so you can avoid sitting in a&e for 20 hours and they can avoid having you taking up a seat in a&e for 20hours.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/06/2024 12:11

Even if it is a sprain you might need a walking boot. Is the a minor injuries clinic near you if you don’t want to sit in A&E.

Toujoursenfrance · 01/06/2024 12:12

No minor injuries here unfortunately. It’s a&e or nothing according to when I put my symptoms into the 111 website 😔

My a&e are fairly quick for things like this as a nurse practitioner can order an x ray and diagnose a break or sprain so more like 1-2 hours rather than the several hours for the doctor

OneTC · 01/06/2024 12:16

I'd give it a day or few. It could be broken. It could be sprained. If it goes a funny colour, extra painful or tingly then don't wait the extra day or few and get an x ray.

In a day or few if there's been improvement it's probably not broken

YMMV - this is just what I'd do

Hankunamatata · 01/06/2024 12:21

Your probably going to need an prayer to rule out a break

Hankunamatata · 01/06/2024 12:21

Prayer= xray

Taciturn · 01/06/2024 12:24

We have minor injury clinics locally and you actually call and make an appointment.
It sounds broken by the way you described the event - severe pain and imstant swelling. Can you bear weight and does it throb when resting?

Scarletttulips · 01/06/2024 12:25

Has it suddenly gotten worse? If it has (I’m assuming so because you didn’t visit your GP yesterday

Why would she take up a GP appointment - there’s nothing a GO could do for her.

I thought that!

Leaving a break for several days is bad advice

Go to A and E

Ohfuckrucksack · 01/06/2024 12:34

You could have a look at the Ottowa ankle rules.

https://em3.org.uk/foamed/16/1/2017/lightning-learning-ottawa-ankle-rule

The Ottawa ankle rules are a clinical decision-making strategy for determining which patients require radiographic imaging for ankle and midfoot injuries. Proper application has high (97.5%) sensitivity and reduces the need for radiographs by ~35% 1,2,4.

Does your patient really need that ankle x-ray? Luckily there is a handy ruleset that can help you decide!

Pollou · 01/06/2024 12:40

I had an a&e appointment for a suspected broken bone in my wrist (several day after) a couple of weeks ago, it was actually quite quick in terms of being seen and getting to go home. Gp will likely tell you that’s where you should go, when I rang up mine they didn’t even ask me to come in to look at it, they said based off what I said the swelling was like and the description best bet was to go get x-rayed at a+e.

This is really helpful so thanks. Does suggest an xray unfortunately 😔
