Can I avoid a&e with this?

Anyone got any advice please? Took the kids to the trampoline park on Thursday and midway through, jumped off a high platform onto a trampoline but landed badly and twisted severely. The swelling came up within less than a minute and the pain made me think I would throw up! I’ve never broken a bone before so have no previous knowledge. But I really do not want to sit in a&e for hours and hours to be told it’s just a sprain.
Anyone for any knowledge please? It’s still so painful and swollen 2 days later 😢

YABU - don’t go
YANBU - go to a&e

@Toujoursenfrance Just hoping it makes you feel slightly better that it is necessary.

Hope it goes reasonably quickly.

I broke my ankle last Christmas. Walk in centre said it was a sprain. It was black and blue, could just about weight bear but was incredibly painful. Turns out it was a break and 6 months on, I having regular physio, on and off swelling and pain. Get it checked out asap!

MrsWhites · 01/06/2024 13:13

Definitely get it checked. My sister thought she had twisted her ankle in similar circumstances, she had torn her Achilles and ended up needing surgery and a boot for almost 6 months.

If she had gone to a&e earlier she could have avoided the surgery and just had a boot apparently.

Downdownunderrabbit · 01/06/2024 13:15

Go to A&E

Tiswa · 01/06/2024 13:17

Yes definitely get it looked at they have DD a boot for her bad sprain and it really helped as she could walk on it. Wore the boot for 2 werks

Has it suddenly gotten worse? If it has (I’m assuming so because you didn’t visit your GP yesterday

Why would she take up a GP appointment - there’s nothing a GO could do for her.

I called my gp with a suspected break. She looked at it, booked me an appointment with the radiology dept, they x-rayed it and set it back to her and she gave me the all clear. No waiting in a&e.

LizzieBennett73 · 01/06/2024 13:22

I sprained my ankle a few years ago and my god it was horrifically painful. Luckily we have an MIU that you can book appointments for and the nurse told me she didn't think it was broken but I still needed an xray. Took about 7/8 weeks to be able to walk on it properly, I hate to say.

Tinysoxxx · 01/06/2024 14:46

If you are going to go today, I would go now before the Saturday night crowd roll up.

NamingConundrum · 01/06/2024 15:13

You should ideally have called gp on Friday, they can directly book you to go to xray rather than waiting in A&E. Since its weekend now I'd get yourself some snacks etc packed and head on over!

I am not a medic but have a lot of experience of ankle injuries as I am very bendy.

I would ice it, elevate it and take pain relief as indicated. What works for me is alternate paracetamol with ibuprofen up to the max dose, but for goodness' sake check this out first with a professional.

Try not to put weight on it for now.Tell pharmacist of any other meds you are on, obviously.

If it deteriorates, alas it is an and e.

Ankle injuries are very debilitating and snapped/sprained tendons can be a lot more painful than breaks.

I think that will need an X-ray OP.

CallThatCloudy · 01/06/2024 15:42

Blimey, the way that people now hesitate to use the NHS services that are provided is a bit daft! Appreciate that you don't want to be stuck in A&E for hours but, come on, you've had an accident, it hurts like hell, that's exactly what A&E are for. Delaying properly fixing a fracture can have serious consequences, and if it is a sprain, you'll still have done the right thing.

When my friend broke her foot she phoned the GP, sent photos and filled in symptoms on the online portal thing and Gp arranged an x ray for her, no waiting in a&e. And as OP clearly didn’t want to go to a&e when it happened GP would have made more sense than waiting for a&e on a Saturday

Toujoursenfrance · 01/06/2024 12:42

This is really helpful so thanks. Does suggest an xray unfortunately 😔

Did you go to a&e?

DonttouchthatLarry · 01/06/2024 18:07

'just a sprain' can be as bad or worse than a fracture. My husband had a severe sprain and was put in plaster.

gamerchick · 01/06/2024 18:09

Sorry dude just going to echo everyone else. You do need an x-ray. That doesn't look happy at all.

Nannyfannybanny · 01/06/2024 18:13

Have you done the RICE?

Tbh I have been to a&e so many times with suspected broken bones and it never has been before. And I mean A LOT! I was always injuring myself until well into my twenties and never broke anything. That’s the only reason I was so reluctant to go. If it was anyone else, I’d tell them to go. I just thought I must have indestructible bones and hated the thought of wasting their time.

Anyway, I did go in the end. Luckily it was really quiet- in and out in less than 2 hours! It is a small fracture on the inside of my ankle. A walking boot and crutches until Wednesday which is the first fracture clinic appointment I could get and then we’ll see.
Oh well, the school run will be fun this week!

Thanks everyone.

Oh and maybe don’t go on trampolines!

This!

A&E Op!

Arconialiving · 01/06/2024 20:55

Glad you went but sorry it's a break! Hope it heals quickly!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/06/2024 08:13

Glad you got it checked out but sorry to hear it’s broken

HappyAsASandboy · 02/06/2024 08:30

We have a local Minor Injuries centre that can x-ray and treat if a simple break.
