What do we think of ‘gingerism’?

It’s annoying me!
Why is okay to be not okay with gingers?
Today a colleague said ‘I have a new grandchild, but they’re ginger…for now . But the sun might bleach it.’

Is this okay to say ‘shut the F up’ or -

YABU - this is fine, be quiet

YANBU - this is shit

My kids and husband are all red heads. Their hair is so beautiful. It was day 2 of primary school that my eldest was bullied for it. It’s disgusting behaviour.

id have told your colleague to shut up personally

Ouch3522774 · 01/06/2024 10:06

It's not acceptable but nor is blondism "having a blonde moment" "being a ditsy blonde" etc. maybe all the pale people need to gang up on brunettes?

FeckOffNowLads · 01/06/2024 10:09

I’ve taught my children from babyhood to be proud of their red hair and they are. What helps though is that we live in a part of the country where it doesn’t seem to be a thing. Maybe because we’re in Liverpool where there are kids of Irish genes floating about and nay red heads. It was only this year that my younger son even heard a negative comment and he’s 11.

But you know it really starts from the most innocuous comments like “Prince Harry - that ginger prick” etc. and for a lot of you reading this who say it’s awful o be so hostile, it happens all the time. I hear it.

IMO it used to be a thing and isn't so much any more. Not with kids anyway. They dont even comment any more. Things have definitely moved in the right direction.

So untrue. My teen DGD is suffering the most extreme bullying because of her beautiful hair colour.

rwalker · 01/06/2024 10:33

I was under the impression ginger had gone full circle and is on trend

BlackForestCake · 01/06/2024 10:58

Why do we say ginger when ginger isn't that colour?

parrotonmyshoulder · 01/06/2024 10:59

Both my children have been, and are, subject to bullying due to their ginger hair. One had to change schools because of the effect on her.

I think I’m gonna have to step off this thread if I read another comment like this.

So fucking offensive and wrong

Step off then. It fits the EU definition of racism.

I'm mixed race. I find your attitude offensive.

😂😂

Sure it does
”Ideas or theories of superiority of one race or group of persons of one colour or ethnic origin.“

You don’t speak for all mixed race people. I find your bullshit offensive

buffyslayer · 01/06/2024 11:39

I love that mine looks different colours in every light and it's changing over time too
All my hair, all not coloured

What do we think of ‘gingerism’?
YaMuvva · 01/06/2024 11:40

Being a redhead is not like being black.
Its like having a mole on your face - which is also not like being black.
It’s a physical characteristic that’s unpopular with some people.
Thats not the same as race or ethnicity.

YaMuvva · 01/06/2024 11:40

It’s like reading that racist Diane Abbot letter all over again being here

Still a thing for teens in my experience.

Gettingbysomehow · 01/06/2024 11:43

YANBU. I think red hair is absolutely stunning and I have massive envy.
Everyone loves ginger cats so why are humans different?

YaMuvva · 01/06/2024 11:43

My DD gets picked on for being short.

Horrific, as is being picked on for a hair colour.

But not comparable to racism and I find it deeply concerning people in 2024 think it’s an acceptable comparison

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/06/2024 11:50

I don’t see that it’s ’OK’ at all.

I knit items for a charitable org. that distributes them (free) to children’s therapists all over the U.K. Theres a massive demand and one thing invariably badly needed is a set of ‘professional’ hand puppets - doctor, nurse, teacher, social worker etc. - 7 in all.
I always make a point of giving one of my professionals red/ginger hair, partly because it’s lovely, but largely for the benefit of any child who might be suffering from teasing.

It does. Like I said, I don't think everyone who slags off gingers (or redheads as they're known in the rest of the world!) is doing it out of conscious racism towards Irish or Scottish people, but that's the root.

In the Equality Act, race can mean your colour, or your nationality (including your citizenship). It can also mean your ethnic or national origins, which may not be the same as your current nationality. For example, you may have Chinese national origins and be living in Britain with a British passport.

And countless others too yes.

Thank you for proving my point by posting that although you clearly scored an own goal in the process lol

Hummingbirdie · 01/06/2024 12:01

It absolutely is racist to be prejudice against redheads on the basis on their hair colour. It is literally part of their ethnic dna

Indeed

The lack of awareness is embarrassing. It's literally in the legal definitions.

OliveK · 01/06/2024 12:12

I used to be a ginger (old and faded)

Never really had any serious hassle, but had 2 exes back in the day who both had a "thing" for red heads...I really was very into both of them so it never bothered me at the time, but now it seems a bit icky like i was a weird fetish😂

WayOutOfLine · 01/06/2024 12:14

The only thing you can say in this situation is 'ginger hair, how lucky!' and move away from the person.

I've done well out of having ginger hair, it's cute on kids, people remember you and when you get older, you don't go grey.

I know some people experience intense bullying at school, though, and that's always wrong, I've had some silly remarks over the years, but nothing more and if anything, I think I've had more positive remarks than silly ones.

Just look puzzled if anyone says anything negative, like you would if they said something politically incorrect about any appearance.

No, ginger is not a race. And it is not about being anti-Irish or anti-Scottish unless you ARE Irish or Scottish.

None of that attributes to hair colour

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 01/06/2024 12:15

3 of 4 of my DC are varying shades of ginger. It pisses me off all the comments

How so?

To claim being anti-hair colour is same as being racist, is quite racist. Even if you are mixed race. Using a definition that doesn’t prove your point is just embarrassing.
