Donning my hard hat for this one - cabin crew appearance

I do realise I'm probably going to get flamed for this but has anyone else noticed a real decline in the appearance of cabin crew members?

Just had a flight with Virgin and the female members honestly looked dreadful. Ill fitting uniforms, red trousers stretched over VPL bottoms, tight white gaping shirts, one had a drab cardigan over the top.

I realise it's a sexist notion but when I was younger they always looked so glamorous strutting through the airport in their heeled court shoes (mainly flat now it appears), immaculate hair and make up.

Also thought the same when I last flew with TUI. The male cabin crew always seem to look well turned out.

Post a few recent photos of yourself and we'll let you know if you look better or worse than cabin crew we've encountered lately.

Brilliant!

PenelopeFeatherington · 01/06/2024 06:50

I saw a member of the Virgin cabin crew on a train the other day and she looked fabulous. We're flying with Virgin later this year so the kids were fascinated by her glamour!

Letsgotitans · 01/06/2024 07:01

God forbid a woman wears knickers 😱

RampantIvy · 01/06/2024 07:02

Ah, OK. I have never flown Emirates @Feelsodrained.

I only fly short haul these days.

I think on some airline, eg Emirates, they do and I have seen plenty of them in heels. I can’t think of anything more painful so I’m pleased this requirement has been dropped on many airlines. Poor people - it’s not a fun job and not well paid either.

Emirates? They definitely don't. In the terminal you'll see female cabin crew wearing heels and also the little hat with the veil. On board, no hat and they change to flat court shoes.

peepsypops · 01/06/2024 07:19

A dinner lady in the sky?! Wow. I'm out. The ignorance.

Howbizarre22 · 01/06/2024 07:24

Well I’m happy that the sexism of this has died- one less bit of inequality & misogyny to encounter. Yeah you deserve to be flamed OP the only thing that matters is that they are good at their job.

StarlightLady · 01/06/2024 07:25

“…red trousers stretched over VPL bottoms”

The colour of the uniform was not decided by the crew. VPL? It’s because they had knickers on!

People in general dress like slobs these days so it's not surprising that most of the PP are flaming you, OP.

Perhaps it’s just that people are no longer as sexist as people like you.

Grapewrath · 01/06/2024 07:28

I can’t imagine waitressing all day in high heels. I honestly wouldn’t even notice these things tbh and I’m glad women don’t have to look a certain way to do their job

Agreed. Appalling comment.

Yep agree. Flight to Barbados from Heathrow in March. One was over made-up, shiny and rude one was the size of a house. Sorry

You should be sorry, disgusting attitude

Bekindmyarse · 01/06/2024 07:33

I think they look pretty awesome here. It’s a tough job. I couldn’t be nice to plane loads of people all the livelong day.

It's been repeated throughout but it's such a tough job.....google BA legacy crew contracts for example.
I want a safe plane that lands and cabin new in the most suitable outfit.
I'm not sure the people on the recent Singapore Airlines flight affected by turbulence would have cared about what the cabin crew were wearing....

WhenTheMoonShines · 01/06/2024 07:43

It’s a jolly good thing their appearance has absolutely nothing to do with the service they provide or how well the pilot flies the plane! I suggest if you’re wanting glamour you go to a fashion show.

MikeRafone · 01/06/2024 07:46

Op you’ve been brain washed into a perception of how people should look. Newspaper propaganda, advertising, media have worked their magic on you.

it shows how susceptible people are to particular notions & also the lack of ability to accept change.

there is help but whether you want to accept you need help is a different matter

LakeTiticaca · 01/06/2024 07:48

I always used to think how uncomfortable they must be in those tight uniforms, high heels and tightly pulled back hair. Working in cramped spaces all the time.People think cabin crew is a glamorous job. It isn't, it's poorly paid and not good for the health.
Also increasingly ( as we see the video clips on SM) the crew are being abused by drunken loutish passengers x

notimagain · 01/06/2024 07:53

@DunkinBensDonuts

They are also more friendly ime although I kind of like the grandmotherly ones you find in American ones….

Sadza · 01/06/2024 08:00

The virgin uniforms are awful, all that red to manage. The look like they’re made of very cheap flammable material which is going to be an issue if there’s a fire in the cabin. I think they save the glamorous ones for first class and make sure they’re very thin in case Richard Branson is flying and needs to pick one of them up like he always does.

milveycrohn · 01/06/2024 08:01

I still see them 'strut' across the airport in high heels, but they generally change into flat shoes once on board the flight, for practical reasons.
However, there could be something in that uniforms are often designed by men, who may not have thought how easy it would be to work in them.
Also, the uniforms need to be washable and easy drying, but this could mean they are made with cheaper fabrics etc

Happyhunny · 01/06/2024 08:07

Yes you’re right
British Airways blouses being white, were one of the worst! as the ones being worn by the crew were all grey!!
As for the shoes, heels have to be worn outside the plane (everywhere) but flats have to be worn on the plane.
Heres a pic of my grandaughter who always looks wonderfully well groomed.

Whoswhoof · 01/06/2024 08:14

Couldn’t agree more! Emirates are the only ones who keep the standards. I love flying with them.

ryanair staff look like they’ve had their head out the window for half the flight.

Bringbackthebeaver · 01/06/2024 08:16

Yes it is a sexist notion. If you realist it's a sexist notion why are you complaining about it?

It's only recently that Virgin stopped requiring their female staff to wear skirts and heels. That's a good thing.

Zanatdy · 01/06/2024 08:17

I never even notice the appearance of the cabin crew. I certainly don’t expect them to look a certain way
