Do people stay stuck in the era of their youth?

Theselovelylightevenings · 31/05/2024 20:07

Or the point when they were the happiest?

Just watching Totp 2 and it’s 1996, I was 18. I remember it very fondly, still love the music from then, still like the fashion from then. I don’t wear it now exactly, but did get very excited when Adidas Sambas came back in and I wear my bucket hat on the beach and so on. I listen to other music, but that era will still always be part of who I am and I still feel the music and fashion was the best then.

Do others feel the same about their youth? If the 80’s was your era, do you still think a perm and Duran Duran are amazing?

I was a teenager in the 80's and nearly all my music i play is 80's . However.......my sons are 19 and 16 and they love the old stuff 😂😂

suburburban · 31/05/2024 20:11

Yes I must admit I like music from 70s and 80s and am enjoying Dr Who from that era.

Love watching TOTP from 1977-1985

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 31/05/2024 20:11

Definitely stuck in my youth; rarely bother with music beyond the early 90s; we listen mainly to Absolute 70s and 80s.

I wish someone would launch 'Generation X' radio!

5128gap · 31/05/2024 20:12

Lol no. I do not. I think 80s fashion was awful and I look at my old photos and think, what was I thinking? Never a fan of Duran Duran, but I still think Soft Cell, The Eurythmics, Depeche Mode and Echo and the Bunnymen are amazing. My 20 something DC agree.

LaPalmaLlama · 31/05/2024 20:19

I’m not sure stuck is the right word but I think the time between probably 15-25 is quite formative because it’s the time when you get the benefits of being an adult without the responsibilities and you feel sorry for anyone that didn’t experience that. Like I feel massively sorry for young adults who have to live at home because they will likely miss out on the early twenties party years but chances are they don’t really care and feel sorry for me because I didn’t have a phone growing up 🤣

Watching TOTP 1980 - it’s like time travel
Music was varied and DH has just told me he doesn’t recall Liquid Gold! ( no bad thing but it worries me for pub quizzes)

Yes I believe the teenage years have a lasting impression- I count myself lucky to have been 15 in 1980
Japan, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Roxy music, The Banshees, OMD, Ultravox, Bowie, Visage, Blondie, Bunnymen, New Order, Style Council, Madness, The Specials……An endless list of brilliance accompanied by Kid Jensen and John Peel on the radio I have seen all these bands and more many times over
My kids have a very eclectic taste in music thanks to hearing all this
So glad so many bands are still going - and touring the world over

Has anyone clocked Bryan Ferry on TOTP?❤️

Ginkypig · 31/05/2024 20:22

I think stuck is probably the wrong word but I think most people have a particular fondness and keep a space free to keep particular things, music etc from their preferred era in!

I have very specific albums or fashion loves or tv shows etc that I may not wear or listen or watch very often or even at all now but will always be held in a special I love that space in my heart.

most people also add to that over the years too but I think there’s something very unique to certain things because partly it comes at a time when it’s the final thing we choose so it attaches to the part of us becoming a proper person separate from anyone else for the first time.

or maybe I’m talking shit lol!

I will say though iv always even when younger had likes from all different decades even from years before I was born to years after.

Theselovelylightevenings · 31/05/2024 20:23

But, when I look back at things I wore in the 90’s, aside from a couple of things, I loved everything else and still think it looks cool 🤷🏻‍♀️😂Classic adidas t-shirts, the trainers, over sized checked shirts tied around the waist (obvs don’t wear that now!) knee high boots and skirts…I love pretty much all of it and think the guys looked great in the Brit pop era too

Have you noticed the stars on TOTP look ridiculously young but when we were teenagers they looked old.

ShillyShallySherbet · 31/05/2024 20:30

If I’m having a rubbish day or feeling generally overwhelmed by being an adult, I can always cheer myself up by listening to music from the late 90s early 00s. This was when I was between the ages of 15 and 25. I’m not stuck there but it just takes me to a place where there are no responsibilities!

Theselovelylightevenings · 31/05/2024 20:39

@ShillyShallySherbet I do that too

Guilty as charged m’lord

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2024 20:44

I really really try and avoid this. I really believe that trying new things and being open to new things is the best way to stay sort of youthful as much as that is possible.

was a teenager in The 80s. Love 80s music but I don’t listen to it exclusively. It would bore me and age me I think

BitOutOfPractice · 31/05/2024 20:46

@suburburban I am OBSESSED with Bryan Ferry from any Era.

suburburban · 31/05/2024 20:49

Yes he's got a sleepy unusual look, his boys all have that look too

JKDcot · 31/05/2024 20:55

Thing is though. The 90s were awesome. The best era ever. The music, movies, the feel of being in the UK with a positive growth mindset. It was just all better!!

Theselovelylightevenings · 31/05/2024 20:59

@JKDcot It really was! I feel like it was all some wonderful dream

I can't say I ever really listen to music from when I was growing up. But in all honesty I'm not a big music fan in general. I might like a song for a while but then never listen to it again! I don't ever really play music or listen to the radio.

The fashion I can also take or leave. Although so many things I've worn in the past have come around again. Like leggings! I used to live in them, then they were "out" for ages. Glad to see them back.

What I do miss, is crimping my hair! My hair is naturally quite flat and lifeless and crimping gave it some body and made it seem thicker. So I would campaign for that to come back in.

I also think I'm like you.

My playlists have one or two songs from my youth, but it's mostly stuff from the last five years.

I have such lovely memories from my 20s, 30s and even 40s (I'm early 50s) but the past is the past and the now is now.

I can enjoyably relive the past through memory, but I don't need mementoes.

Isitchill · 31/05/2024 21:23

No, hate looking back. Life's too short.

I prefer current music. I'm 50 and still listen to radio 1 in the daytime.

FluffyDiplodocus · 31/05/2024 21:24

I listen a lot to music from when I was at uni (mid 00’s) especially when I want to sing very loudly in the car and often joke I’m waiting for the long tunic tops with pointless belt, frayed denim miniskirt and gladiator sandals to come back in again so I’ll understand fashion once more!

CuriousJBJ · 01/06/2024 01:12

I definitely still listen to a lot of the same music - I'm a bit of a rock chick at heart, and just can't find much "modern" stuff that I like as much as the classics!

According to my 18yo, I also dress like a teenager 🤣 But he bases that on his own dress sense (budding rock guitarist) as I was wearing a GnR T-shirt and black jeans when he said it!

Yes, I agree OP. I am very slightly younger than you and also love this era - music and fashion.

I think most people experience this.

I can remember people saying to me from around the he's of 12-19 "these are the best days of your life" and "youth is wasted on the young" etc and just rolled my eyes.

I get it now.

Those years are so important and I think most people feel a deep connection to the things that anchor them to those times.

NattyTurtle · 01/06/2024 05:13

I still prefer to listen to music from the 70s & 80s. I used to think I would keep up to date with music trends, but at some stage I decided that I was over it all and started getting even more into the music of my youth and "discovering" music I never listened to at the time. My late DF loved to sing and he always sang the music from the time when he was young. I sometimes think I still dress like a teenager rather than a "grown up", but that's because I still feel like one (even though the mirror shows my mid-60s self!).

RunningAndSinging · 01/06/2024 05:25

I think it must have something to do with the time when your brain ‘re wires’ between about the ages of 14 and 25. The music from that era feels like the best music for ever more as it was there when you were forming life long connections in your brain.
