Do people stay stuck in the era of their youth?

Theselovelylightevenings · 31/05/2024 20:07

Or the point when they were the happiest?

Just watching Totp 2 and it’s 1996, I was 18. I remember it very fondly, still love the music from then, still like the fashion from then. I don’t wear it now exactly, but did get very excited when Adidas Sambas came back in and I wear my bucket hat on the beach and so on. I listen to other music, but that era will still always be part of who I am and I still feel the music and fashion was the best then.

Do others feel the same about their youth? If the 80’s was your era, do you still think a perm and Duran Duran are amazing?

I like to think of music of the '70s and '80s as my little indulgences. they take me away to a time I suppose that was more innocent and no responsibilities.

Of course I've kept up with everything modern along the way. I didn't stay stuck in the same hairstyle or makeup style.

That's really a pleasure so many of the seventies fashion and hairstyles have come back as I am enjoying wearing a few pieces.

I've noticed a few people I went to high school with have kept the same hairstyle and makeup style. The big hair!

But, when I look back at things I wore in the 90’s, aside from a couple of things, I loved everything else and still think it looks cool 🤷🏻‍♀️😂Classic adidas t-shirts, the trainers, over sized checked shirts tied around the waist (obvs don’t wear that now!) knee high boots and skirts…I love pretty much all of it and think the guys looked great in the Brit pop era too

Hmm I think your rose tinted glasses have taken over slightly.
Do you really think the 90's look was cool? I remember a sea of teenagers all dressed in baggy Adidas t shirts and matching joggers with matching trainers of course.

I dare say I will be flamed for this but those were definitely the 'chav' years!
Heaven forbid you didn't/couldn't conform to the look...especially on non uniform day at school, you were an easy target without those stripes to blend into your surroundings.
I think it's great for kids now, they have so many different 'looks' to choose from, my teenagers hate athleisure (thank god!) and its great that they can choose an alternative without othering themselves!
In short th 90's were shite and I'm glad they've gone😆

Geesejuggler · 01/06/2024 05:30

I'd go back to the mid to late 90s to about the mid 2000s in a heartbeat if I could despite having grown up in the decade that taste forgot, the 1980s. What I miss most about 1994 to 2008 ish is the sense of hope which currently appears to be missing in action unless you're mega rich.

RampantIvy · 01/06/2024 05:32

Oh you youngsters Grin
I was a teenager in the 1970s. Music from that era makes me reminisce, but I'm not stuck in a time warp. I listen to and enjoy music from all eras.

Most of the Christmas songs are from the 1970s and get regurgitated every single year. I can tell you that hearing the same set of songs every year for 50 years loses its novelty very quickly. I tend not to listen to the radio in December.

Pop stars from then had longevity. How many of today's pop stars will still be around in 40 or 50 years? Although, sadly, a lot of my pop heroes are dying off now.

Halfheadhighlights · 01/06/2024 05:32

Recently I’ve been looking back at the late 90s and wished I was still there and could relive some of that feeling I felt. We had it good then

Bululu · 01/06/2024 08:05

My kids listen to music from my youth and recognise it was amazing. I missed where bands were not stamped on with cancel culture and all that BS.

A lot of young people like music from earlier times. All the innovation seems to have disappeared from music now.

KimberleyClark · 01/06/2024 08:32

I listen to Heart 70s and Gold UK in the car. Modern music is shite to dance to IMO. I’d love it if disco made a comeback.

BigDahliaFan · 01/06/2024 08:36

We are in our 50s. And try and keep up to date…but hampered by the fact that Biffy Clyro first hit was in 2013! And I think of them as last week. Fuckers.

My BIL is 60 and hasn’t listened to anything newer than genesis ever….

seeitthroughmyeyes · 01/06/2024 08:45

I was born late 90's and I much prefer early 2000's or 80's music much more than today! I also dress differently to the style it is now. I just don't like it

soupfiend · 01/06/2024 08:47

Yes you're absolutely right, the 80s for me the music the looks. I still dress 'funky' which is an 80s style, or I try to if I can fit into things but I think it probably makes me look like a throw back

Pigeonqueen · 01/06/2024 08:53

I like all sorts of stuff. Some 80s and 90s (I was 18 in 1998) but I also love to keep up with modern stuff - I have a dd aged 21 and I think that’s helped. Oddly enough my Ds aged 12 LOVES 80s music and when we get in the car he always wants Heart 80s radio on 😳😳 (my dd can’t stand it). It’s funny really because I’ve never really shown him 80s music but I think it’s definitely having a bit of a revival at the moment. I’ve been listening to Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo at the moment. It makes me feel young to listen to what some of the teenagers are listening to. I loved being young and I want to know what young people now are in to! 🤣

Mid 90s was all about grunge where I was. Checked shirts and jeans and so on. Some people wearing hippy skirts with mirrors on. Then strappy dresses over T-shirts. Funny how it varies.

Auburngal · 01/06/2024 09:08

Music in the last 15 years has been rubbish. It’s forgettable. People will be listening to 80s music in 40 years time. Today’s music is not played 40 weeks later.

Kids tv was much better in the old days. There’s a need for a channel to show classic kids tv. Have that with drama, quiz shows and comedy. For example my friend’s DS much prefers the claymation Fireman Sam over the CGI. Plus it saves my friend money as bought cheap DVDs from charity shops and online.

Talipesmum · 01/06/2024 09:11

It seems from this that there’s rather a trend for nostalgia. No idea on sample size etc!

Do people stay stuck in the era of their youth?
Auburngal · 01/06/2024 09:12

@TootGoesTheOwl
where I lived in the late 90s, it was the Adidas popper trousers with a Kappa puffer jacket. Lads were called Wiggers and girls Kappa Slappas.

Mid 00s, there were some lads who wore jeans low down to show their entire boxers. So tempted to hoist the jeans up

Screamingabdabz · 01/06/2024 09:15

I try and fight it. I cringe when my DH goes on about there being ‘no good music nowadays’. Of course there is!

I was a teenager in the 80s but the 90s was ‘my’ era and I still love everything about it - I got very excited to see some of the fashion come back recently (even though I’m too old and fat to wear it any more) but I try to not be that cliche. I don’t want to be stuck in time.

MariaVT65 · 01/06/2024 09:18

Yes i always miss the 90s when I was a child. Music, tv shows, good life.

I got a shock the other day when I realised my 3 year old may have an electronic register at school next year instead of the tick paper registers we had at school 😂

I thought wiggers was racist? 🙈

Theselovelylightevenings · 01/06/2024 09:35

@TootGoesTheOwl Hmm, that was more of a chav look. I had (and still have) my dads classic fitted (quite tight) Adidas t shirt, I’d wear with a short skirt and Gazelles for clubbing or a white fitted t shirt with black babydoll dress over or lots of denim shirts/checked shirts, cropped tops, bodies..ahh I loved it

I think it must have something to do with the time when your brain ‘re wires’ between about the ages of 14 and 25. The music from that era feels like the best music for ever more as it was there when you were forming life long connections in your brain.

Edited

I agree with this. I was 18 in 1990, music from about 1988 - 1998 has an emotional pull that more modern stuff, even though I like it, just doesn't have for me.

I also agree that the 90s were a really optimistic time of growth, possibility and opportunity, it's almost painful to look back from today's gloomy perspective.

VolvoFan · 01/06/2024 10:18

I sort of do. My life was rough up until about age 23, which could explain why I'm a miserable old cow at 36 😂 I was listening to 'Turn Back Time' by Aqua the other day at it took me back a bit. I get suggestions on YouTube for songs from the 70s to the early 2000s and I have Greatest Hits Radio on in the car and at work, so I often get music from Duran Duran stuck in my head.

I'm still very much crushing on David Boreanaz 😍 My DH had a crush on Mila Kunis, Jessica Alba, the character Willow from Buffy and Melissa Joan Hart. I've started re-watching Due South, young Paul Gross is so cute. I'd say societal rot set in in the 90s and became more visible in the early 2000s, and now everything has gone batshit bonkers tits up full-on crazy.

Gawd yes about the Christmas songs!!

I think that much of the album music was better in the 60s and 70s because people played actual instruments and sang without electronic voice improvement.
There were some real virtuosos in bands and exciting original compositions.

Any of the music I enjoy from more recently has to fit that criteria.
I don't enjoy disposable samey music any more than I listened to what was in the charts then.

But as for being happier then, no. I've had brilliant times in all decades.
I don't wear what I wore then either but I'm still partial to a bit of patchouli…

JohnWickAteMyHamster · 01/06/2024 10:37

Yup. I'm fully stuck in the 90s. I think 1995 was the last time I really felt happy

Yep this was my “uniform” too. And Etnies skate trainers, or DMs.
