Can't visit friend as her dog is racist

CaliforniaCookie · 31/05/2024 19:15

I was making plans to visit one of my best friends.
She is white and I'm mixed race.

She told me she was concerned as her new dog who i haven't met, is racist.

Anytime he sees a person who is not white he goes mental.

This is honestly not a fake post.

Not sure how to respond. Advice welcome.

We had a dog who hated people wearing hats.

Is this a wind up and you’re all in on it?

Sadly this is not uncommon.
You can train a dog to react to certain things

Dobest · 01/06/2024 08:40

If the dog starts giving Nazi salutes, you can be prosecuted.

Just saying, don't let things go too far.

bouquetofpheasants · 01/06/2024 08:41

I thought it was just our dog. She only ever barked when there were black people on TV, especially children. She stopped when we told her to but looked confused. The area where we live (not in the UK) there basically are only white people. Embarrassing. She didn’t like men with long beards either. Or Asians. Other than that she was the friendliest and most happy dog ever.

Poettree · 01/06/2024 08:45

My dog is not racist, but it hates all other dogs and people wearing high-visibility gear. It's an issue. I hope your visit goes well.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 01/06/2024 08:45

I used to have a dog who hated fat people, old people and lesbians. And my daughter is a lesbian. It was a nightmare. Dogs long gone now (still miss the little bitch) which is just as well because I'm fat and old now.

mogtheexcellent · 01/06/2024 08:50

Our previous dog was racist. Barked at black people. Very embarrassing but we live in v white part of country. He was raised from puppy.

Current dog also racist. She hates welsh people. Shes a rescue and was mistrested by previous owner. She comes from a welsh farm. She loves darker skin colours because, i guess, in her mind they are less likely to be welsh.

Both are collies. Collies are highly intelligent but also highly strung.

My dad's dog used to howl and howl whenever Michael Aspel appeared on tv. It got so bad that just the sound of the programme's theme tune set him off as he knew Aspel was the host and he started to howl in anticipation. Watching This Is Your Life was a nightmare!!

is this a reverse?yip,yip,yipeeeeeeeee

longdistanceclaraclara · 01/06/2024 08:52

My old boy was racist, he was also hatist, glassist, too big flappy coatist, brown shoeist, and a load of other foibles. Horse is the same he's binnist mainly. They're just animals.

Devilshands · 01/06/2024 09:02

It’s a failure of socialisation and very common. Dogs don’t like things they don’t know and if she hasn’t properly socialised her dog with a variety of people and every day things then she has failed it tbh.

Butterleigh · 01/06/2024 09:04

I once had a misogynist cat 🐈‍⬛

fieldsofbutterflies · 01/06/2024 09:54

Lots of people are saying it’s down to bad socialisation but it’s practically impossible to expose your dog to everything by the time the socialisation window closes.

Also, you even if you socialise your dog perfectly, they can still have bad experiences and get frightened.

dicokno · 01/06/2024 10:15

I have a friend whose dog barked at every black person they saw. Took a while but she managed to train him not to do it.

I have a man-hating cat. She hisses at every man she sees. I haven't managed to train her not to do it unfortunately.

Georgyporky · 01/06/2024 10:37

NDN's dog hates men !

Choochoo21 · 01/06/2024 10:45

Dogs pick up on our energy.

If you are in a predominantly white area and you see a black person and feel some sort of way about them, then the dog will pick up on that energy and think there’s something to be wary of.

Some dogs don’t like men and it’s because of past experiences or the owner’s energy changes when men are around.

If these things happened when the dog was young and they’ve not been desensitised to it, then they’re going to stay that way and it potentially get worse.

The best thing you can do is go around to hers and get the dog used to you (do it slowly over time and give it some treats).

Meeting outside on mutual ground and going for a walk with it, will be much easier for the dog than you coming into it’s safe space.

Dogs that have not grown up seeing types of people, will often be fearful of those types as adults.

e.g. dogs growing up and only seeing white people, are often fearful of black people (also vice versa).

This is why it's so important for dog owners to socialise their dogs from day one, with all types of people (as well as other animals,) old, young, male, female, disabled, people in uniform, black, white, short, tall etc etc. Would prevent many problems. If dog owners can't be arsed to socialise and train them then they should think twice before getting a dog.

greenpolarbear · 01/06/2024 10:50

buy a white chicks mask from ebay and recommend the dog sign up for the Reform party

Unfortunately you don’t get that luxury with rescues.

Rubyupbeat · 01/06/2024 11:41

They are not racist, in the way we would see racism, but if they are not used to seeing black or asian people some dogs will react, out of fear.
Also, my white friend grew up in a very predominantly bengali area, and her dog hated bengalis, because as a puppy she would be tormented daily by bengali kids, spitting at her and throwing things and dogs never forget, it led to her being very reactive to them, they were scared of her once she was fully grown . She was fine with black people.

Perhaps you could organise dog classes with one of each of these people and animals you mention, so that us dog owners can socialise our dogs to your happiness.
