Can't visit friend as her dog is racist

CaliforniaCookie · 31/05/2024 19:15

I was making plans to visit one of my best friends.
She is white and I'm mixed race.

She told me she was concerned as her new dog who i haven't met, is racist.

Anytime he sees a person who is not white he goes mental.

This is honestly not a fake post.

Not sure how to respond. Advice welcome.

Our old girl, a yellow lab, just would not recognize other dogs unless they were also yellow labs. Occasionally she’d notice another yellow dog, but she just ignored all dogs that were not at least yellow.

That’s so funny!

chihuahuas are generally very aggressive /easily riled dogs in any situation

Frenchies and pugs also we had a workman in today and it sounded like they were being tortured. High pitch screeching they hate anything different in there routine they notice everything. They cried and made a fuss when we got a new sofa haven't a clue why.

Doihavetogotoworkdotcom1 · 31/05/2024 22:30

We’ve had the same problem when the dog has walked past someone with a burka on.

That’s so funny!

And her momma was a black lab!

Shade17 · 31/05/2024 22:35

It’s not just people though, there are quite a few dogs who hate black dogs for no apparent reason. Maybe it’s something to do with the way they see darker colours?

Guide dogs were looking for people with tattoos and beards to help socialise the dogs.

My lab has had nothing bad happen to her! She just had never seen a black person before and went nuts!

That doesn't make her racist. Would have potentially been the same if she'd never seen a green person before and saw one.

Katbum · 31/05/2024 22:40

i had a rescue that used to bite black males. Not ‘racist’ as that’s a cultural construct dog’s don’t get. But most definitely fearful of a ‘type’ due to whatever had happened before, perhaps no exposure to different races, or perhaps different ethnicities have subtly different scent?

I know someone with a racist dog. Seems to be a thing.

was fixable via food bribery- you could offer to turn up with a whole tub of roast chicken (bones removed) and be the fabulous type of human who just keeps handing over chunks of chuck for no good reason other than making the association in the dogs mind that people of colour are providers of high value treats and worth being lovely to just in case they’ve got a load of spare chicken about their person.

love this

CaliforniaCookie · 31/05/2024 22:42

Thanks everyone feel less abnormal now having seen all these posts saying it really is a thing about racist dogs. Had an honest chat with my friend about all this and how it made me feel. She is fully supportive and has decided to educate herself on how best to intergarte her dog with people of mixed race heritage before my visit. She didn't truly appreciate this was such an issue until i sent her this post to look at. She's mortified.

@CaliforniaCookie

L.o.l 🤣 is this attempt at being a bit spicy troll 🤔 or a wind up then?

quite perculair real Strange mumsnet thread this one isn't it

i suspose its the weekend and certain ones out there,
get bored and restless and make things up to get a reaction from posters online on websites like this

Just wondering as i am of afro Caribbean British ancestry myself,

Is this one of those yapping small dogs types like Jack Russell ect,

What breed is it then?

Yiked Really hope it's not a a large dog breed like a Rottweiler that's like that then??? !!!

Nah - it's real. I would have thought it a wind up were it not for my friend's dog - not a rescue - with out of control barking at any black man

echt · 31/05/2024 22:44

Dogs cannot be racist FFS. Change your wording, OP.

So if a dog barks at ONLY people of colour, what else would you call it, if not racist??

@CaliforniaCookie just because I know you have a LOT of posts to wade through, in which tediously literal people deliberately misunderstand your wording, wanted to repeat the pleas not to use pet corrector with this dog. It honestly will do far more harm than good in this instance.

I honestly don't understand the hate against pet corrector?

That's so funny Grin

My beagle definitely knows other beagles - he gets so excited and sings the song of his people!

My mums dog hates people with beards. Weird creatures dogs lol

BrickTraybake · 31/05/2024 22:54

My Mums dog is like this also. And also a chihuahua. I don’t know why and didn’t quite believe her till I saw it!

I have a chihuahua. Never had a issue so don't think it's a problem with the breed.

Not hate, per se. I have a can myself which I take on walks just in case my dog is attacked by another.

But as a training tool, it doesn't always work. In your circumstances, the dog will be barking because it is under the mistaken impression that people of colour are to be feared. Pet corrector, whilst not painful, is frightening for dogs. By using it, you'll basically be telling the dog that it is right to fear you and that it should redouble its efforts.

This then means that, best case, it will continue barking at you and other people of colour it meets and, worst case, it could escalate to a bite as it feels you have not heeded its 'stay away' warnings with barking, growling, etc.

I have a cat who is the sweetest thing in the world. Put a hat on and she will attack. She is terrified of people in hats and goes into instant assault mode.

we keep her indoors and our heads hat free.

Our elderly cat hates men. She turned up in our garden about 10 years ago- aged around 5 and has never been reclaimed. DH had just died and so it has only been me and DD in her house. When men turn up she is clearly very fearful. She was neutered (not chipped) but had obviously been owned. She was a timid little thing so assume she had suffered some ill treatment she associates with men. Happy to report that our long- term lodger cat now knows she is queen cat of the universe (despite the squillions of foster cats and kittens.....) and we are her slaves.
