It will be overturned on appeal.

Interesting. On what grounds? Tough to get a jury verdict overturned, particularly when where it was unanimous on so many counts, but I'm interested in your case.

Begsthequestion · 31/05/2024 15:11

Trump is only running for president to stay out of prison.

His team will long out the proceedings as much as possible to get past November, and if he's elected he then has a chance of keeping his freedom.

A lot can happen in a few months.

It was discovered that Trump had classified documents offsite—he was given warnings to return them and refused. Documents were shown to Mar a Lago country club members as a way for Trump to show how important he is. His lawyers signed off that all documents had been returned—untrue. There is CCTV evidence in Mar a Lago of staff members moving the boxes around the site. They were instructed to lie. This all resulted in an FBI raid.

In light of this, and in an abundance of caution, both Joe Biden and Mike Pence VOLUNTARILY had officials come to their homes to help identify documents. Full access was given and some documents were found at both Biden’s and Pence’s locations. All documents were immediately given back. Full transparency. No lying/hiding/refusing to surrender the documents. Therefore, no FBI raids were required. And no criminal charges filed.

Jesus—does anyone follow WTF is actually going on? Or are we just listening to the “whataboutisms” on Fox News?

Biden and Pence complied. Trump did not.

Plus, Trump was destroying documents and flushing documents down the toilet in the White House.

I had forgotten about the toilet flushing. Seriously, there are 1000+ events to remember from his presidency. Ingest bleach. Believe what Putin says over your own CIA. Brag to Boy Scouts about orgies. Throw ketchup against the wall. Describe how we’ll be hearing more and more from Frederick Douglass. There should be a timeline somewhere….

The US is on the precipice of something very bad. Either Trump takes office and pardons himself, frees all the people who committed acts of violence against police officers and others on January 6th, and really shows us what he figured out how to do differently the second time around to rule as a dictator, or Biden wins and the country is torn apart by violent insurrectionists led by Trump.

But there is a little perverse part of me that is interested to see just absurdly corrupt Trump will be the second time around. The first time, he installed his family members and some fairly competent bureaucrats who turned out not to be just a bunch of yes men. The second time, it will be all family members and yes men and a stack of executive orders ready to go on the first day. It will be chilling.

He could run from a jail cell. Could he serve from a jail cell? Strange times.

He can just pardon himself once elected. He can run the campaign from jail

The level of ignorance on this thread is strong. Please tell me you can't vote.

Chatonette · 31/05/2024 16:11

He can pardon himself from the federal charges as president. But he cannot pardon himself from the State of New York convictions and the State of Georgia charges (if found guilty—“I just need you to come up with 11k votes,” caught on tape). The NY and GA pardons can only be granted by the Governors of those states.

I gave a factual answer. The President can pardon a felon including themself.

Obama pardoned nearly 2000 people

Right. But yesterday’s felony conviction was brought on by the State of New York. So he would need to become Governor there to pardon himself.

Yes. I'm the first to admit there have been a lot of laughs (through the tears) over the past 8 years, but it's not beyond a travesty into genuinely terrifying. The degree to which they have been able to commandeer the country in such a short time is incredibly worrying. Although I will admit I've long been a bit of a doom-monger about the effects of trickle down economics, neo-con/liberal policies, the federalist society, citizens united, the kochs, the mercers, etc. etc., even I've been surprised by the complete and total hijacking of the republican party. A second term would not be even remotely funny.

The percentage of Americans who have never heard of Project 2025 is very worrying indeed. Never mind that 17% of voters apparently believe Biden is responsible for overturning Roe.

Sigh. Once again. A president cannot pardon him or herself on a state conviction, only a federal conviction. This was a state conviction.

My God,what a horrible thing to say. You'd deprive his innocent 18yr old son of his father just because you don't like him? Disgusting, and yes, unhinged.

I've deliberately not quoted the PP's appalling remark, but sadly that's the kind of mentality we're dealing with here - the same one, as a mentioned earlier, which gave rise to past gleeful posts about Trump being assassinated

And no I'm not a fan either, but maybe the real irony is that this comes from folk who are falling over themselves to call him deranegd

He has zero respect for democracy and the US Constitution, as evidenced when he tried to get Mike Pence to refuse to certify the election despite him not having the power to do that, and I'm not as confident as you that he won't find a way to pardon himself of all charges.

Its up for legal argument. The Constitution states the President can pardon for "crimes against the United States". I am sure some commentators will say it cannot be done for crimes convicted at the State level but this will go to the Supreme court and they are largely Republican, just look at what happened with Roe V Wade.

Edited

Because there are 51 constitutions—1 US constitution and 50 state constitutions.

Although if he becomes “a dictator on day 1” like he has promised, perhaps he will dissolve statehood completely. Who knows?

Delighted! Now, will it stop him winning the election? Could the US have a jailed president!

It won't.
Full stop.
World 🌎 has gone mad.

Polishedshoesalways · 31/05/2024 16:36

I wonder now is Biden next?

Sleepydoor · 31/05/2024 16:37

"Because there are 51 constitutions—1 US constitution and 50 state constitutions."

@Chatonette Yes, understood. He has no respect for any of the 51 constitutions and look how he attacked Michigan's Governor and seemed to condone his followers plotting to kidnap her. I would not put anything past him or some of his followers.
