I don't think he will end up in prison, my concern is not wanting him to be elected on November 5th.

cerisepanther73 · 31/05/2024 07:28

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g
Unfortunately he has Trump got die hard passionate code world= ( gullible strong fan base) no matter what he has done in the past or will do in the future,
they are entranced by him like he is a wizard or something 🤔
Trump the far right circus ring master 🎪 has weirdly hypnotic effect on them, he can do no wrong in their eyes,

Now we can see how it happens that infamous dictatorships in history entranced appealed to so many etc,

America 🇺🇸 and its fundamentals far right ones, and Trump
I totally agree the jury were brave like one poster said ubove @AmiablePedant

I also agree with other posters that these convictions he has now unfortunately could even troubling,
make him even more popular than he allready is, !

In America politics and nowadays especially expect the unexpected whatever shape or form that could be,

Fandangodiggers · 31/05/2024 07:36

It was the right decision in that he was guilty and was found as such. In that sense, I’m pleased justice worked.

However, it changes nothing about his presidential prospects unfortunately. He will not go to jail due to logistics, the worst will be house arrest and a monetary fine. It will rally his base, he’s more likely to win the election now. Hitler was also a convicted criminal (I’m not comparing to two politically, there’s just a lot of parallels in terms of blind following etc), he was still elected.

Trumps desperation to be president again was nothing to do with this court case, there’s a few more coming down the track that are federal, all of which would mean jail time. He needs to be president so he can squash them. This case was the weakest of the lot, so what this does mean is his fear of the stronger cases will now be higher.

Unfortunately, part of me believes it’s better that Trump is president for the next 4 years because that then removes the question of him ever becoming president again after that. His age means he’s unlikely to serve the full 4 year term, as is Biden. I think though if he doesn’t win, he continues to divide America until the day he dies as long as the question of him running again is still on the table. I worry if he loses again, this continues.

DeanElderberry · 31/05/2024 07:44

Delighted to see justice done, but still appalled that the voters of such a great country are going to have to choose their president from between two doddery old men of questionable mental competence, one of them a convicted criminal.

Still glad to wake up to these verdicts - checked last thing before I settled down last night, but the jury hadn't come back then.

greengreyblue · 31/05/2024 07:52

He is deluded . Can’t believe there is no law in US to stop him running for president. He needs locking up.

greengreyblue · 31/05/2024 07:56

I’m baffled that in such a vast country, the best they can offer is Biden or Trump.

SinnerBoy · 31/05/2024 07:58

Yes, it seems to be a menu of turd burger, or shit sandwich.

He won't go to prison, NY doesn't send first time, non-violent convicts to prison, unless there are seriously aggravating factors. He's going to get a fine, certainly and there's a strong possibility of probation. If he gets probation, it's likely that he will be banned from travelling out of NY State...

The Georgia election interference case is probably most troublesome for him, not least because he can't be pardoned by a president for a state crime. Also, if convicted, it's highly likely that he'll be imprisoned.

If so, the logistics may mean that he'll have to have house arrest, as he must have his Secret Service guards. House arrest would be practical, armed guards in a prison would not.

Magnoliasunrise · 31/05/2024 07:59

GordonBlue · 30/05/2024 22:19

No one's ever won from a jail cell before. There was a guy who ran while in jail but he didn't win.

What a choice, from such a vast country. A criminal senior and a senior with questionable mental capacity.

This is what I don't get - how come there is only this choice? Surely both parties can field someone else? It makes our choice look almost respectable.

Misthios · 31/05/2024 08:00

I think all the posters rejoicing in this conviction don't get the whole picture here. The US presidential race is a binary choice A vs B. Republican vs Democrat. And it is going to be Biden vs Trump.

I have many American friends who are staunchly Republican, they are very socially and politically conservative in their views. Many supported Nikki Haley for the Republican nomination and voted for her in their states, but she didn't win. They would not ever vote for Biden as they fundamentally disagree with a lot of what he says, just as some people here who are dyed in the wool Labour voters would never ever vote for Rishi Sunak. They also mention both candidates' advanced age, the fact that Biden has had several well-publicised lapses where he has appeared confused or forgotten key pieces of information.

Even if some republicans just don't vote at all, others will see a Trump administration as preferable to a Democrat one.

FrogandTrumpet · 30/05/2024 22:22

It’s nice to see he’s taken it on the chin though.

Yes indeedy, handshakes all round for the prosecutor, judge and the jury, heartfelt invites to them all to pop down to visit Margo Largo What’s an Embargo for an all expenses holiday. Rueful smiles “ You got me good, guys, fair play to you.” What a gent.

anotherside · 31/05/2024 08:09

Ridiculous how excited people are at this. Trump is supposed to be worst the guy/president ever. And yet, judging him on his record, Trump got 74 million to Biden’s 81 million votes. Not much in it. That’s because people who live in the US saw there’s really nothing between them on the stuff that matters - economy, foreign policy, jobs etc. In fact on some stuff Trump is preferable. And at least he’s not just a stooge of the system and willing to launch foreign wars at the drop of a hat to benefit US arms manufacturers and big oil.

It would be nice if we could at least point to Trump’s personal moral failings - his disrespect for women etc. But even on that front you’ve a choice between Trump’s crude words/humou versus Biden’s horrible touching of young kids and women. Both unpleasant but if pushed I’ll take the mouthy idiot rather than the kid grabber. It surprises me that any parents would disagree.

Anyway, Trump is still bookmakers favourite to beat Biden - which says it all really.

It's a landslide for Trump! 34/34!

Grin No one's ever had a verdict like this before, never, this is a fact, let me tell you.

For his 'core supporters ' the invasion of the Capitol' was not wrong, talking to people in middle America can be very disturbing, there is a very Wild West mentality. What we get on TV is usually East and West coast but there's a lot we rarely see and that's the Trump powerbase. I predict he will incite even more violence about this verdict, Goethe jurors are being protected.

Yes, I understand that the diehard supporters think he did nothing wrong there in inciting the riot, but don't they ask themselves why he didn't turn up in person? A good many of the gullible fools who forced their way into the Capitol ended up in prison. Trump meanwhile has carried on with his life. That and his draft dodging back at the time of the Vietnam war surely ought to make some of his military veteran supporters wonder if he might in fact be a lily-livered coward.

Umm he will probably win the election now so I wouldnt jump for joy. This is the starting gun for civil unrest. People are so short sighted on here, almost like they don’t know what the response is likely to be… and it’s not good for the states or for the wider global community.

daisychain01 · 31/05/2024 08:18

Trump didn't do a day's work in the entire 4 years of his presidency.

If he wasn't Tweeting in his big pants, he was wandering round a golf course.

not exactly setting an inspiring example to the citizens of US, not least of all his own children.

Polishedshoesalways · 31/05/2024 08:19

Watch the donations and support pour in. This is not how it seems.

It’s not about that, presidents are figure heads - it’s what they represent that seems to really matter, how it shapes future policy.

cerisepanther73 · 31/05/2024 08:32

@Fandangodiggers

I didn't know Hitler was convicted criminal and he still became a leader like that?

What crime was he convicted about then?

Also wondering what other feudal transgressions crimes has Trump done that are in the pipeline then?

Sounds intriguing 🤔

verdibird · 31/05/2024 08:37

American expat here. MAGAs will continue to support him no matter what. But, more moderate Republicans may hesitate…they won’t vote for Biden, so they may not vote at all. This may be just enough votes to put Biden in the Oval Office again. Biden has been handed a strategic weapon against his opponent, and let us hope he uses it wisely and saves my home country from 4 years under Trump. Trump was clearly guilty and ultimately no one is above the law. That said, I do wish the Democrats would have a stronger candidate. One term was fine for Joe Biden, but I’m guessing Kamala Harris would serve out part of the second one if he wins again.

I’m also thinking if Trump is jailed the logistics of it all for the prison. Maybe they might do like they did to Napoleon and put him on an island. Guantanamo Bay springs to mind. Out of site, out of mind which would dampen down the political unrest. But realistically, he will just get a fine and probation and not be allowed to travel outside New York. Interesting times for sure. I’m sure America’s shenanigans are keeping you Brits all well entertained!

Oh for sure…Trump will play the martyr and the MAGAs will pay his court costs, fines and fund his lifestyle. It is a personality cult.

greengreyblue · 31/05/2024 08:39

Why ??? I don’t get the MAGA thought process. Are they stupid?
Why is Biden running again? What about Kamela Harris?

Topseyt123 · 31/05/2024 08:41

It's a great result, and his subsequent whinge that it was rigged and the judge was incompetent/corrupt was totally predictable.

He's almost certainly planning an appeal. We certainly haven't heard the last of this by a long shot. He's a loose cannon, for sure.

I'd like to think that this could bar him from standing for presidency, but I doubt it will.

I'll have no respect for those who vote for such an arsewipe.

Same.

I'm gutted he's been found guilty. He will become a hero to too many because of it 🙄 it was going to be a win win for him no matter what.

WhenTheMoonShines · 31/05/2024 08:51

Fell asleep at the back of 9 last night, woke up for the loo around 11, stupidly looked at my news feed and saw the verdict. Didn’t sleep for the next two hours I was that chuffed Grin
