9 stone female?

OP posts:
CJ0374 · 30/05/2024 21:15

I can't believe so many people are lifting their teen sons, husbands or being lift up by other family members! 😆

What's lift easily? I think 9 stone is heavy- not for a female. But it's a decent weight. I've seen tons of women struggle with suitcases at the airport. They're 20kg. I can deadlift 55. Could I sling a 9 stone person over my shoulder - no. Could I do a piggy back? Yes. Over the threshold, no. So it's a very vague question

Deadlift is not a good measure of what I think people have in mind when they think of a scenario "a man lifts a woman". I deadlift 112.5 kg as 1RM, but I won't be able to bridal-carry a person of the same weight, not even close.

Why do most of the responses here make it sound like 9 stone is heavy for a female?
I think that’s entirely in your head.

Hardly. Most responses seem to be saying they couldn't lift a 9 stone female safely.

Haven't most females been picked up and twirled or been piggy-backed by their partners? Most will be 9 stone or heavier.

It's not exactly a weight of a large person.

Err... no?

Hmm, not since I was about 7! 🙄

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 30/05/2024 22:05

@CJ0374 - surely it was a moment of joy when your kids realised they could lift you rather than the other way round. Plus there’s something lovely about attempting to still do a carry to bed for a child who is pretty much the same size as you.

It's a frequent source of entertainment in our house, lol. As the teens get bigger, they like to see how strong they are. I like to prove I can still carry them like my babies that they are.
When DS1 passed his driving test on the 3rd attempt, I picked him up and spun him around (he's taller than me and about 12 stone!).

Lift off the ground, yes. Do a Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing? Probably not.

😂 😂

Unfortunately, I can't have children, so no, I wouldn't know what this was like.

TheTartfulLodger · 30/05/2024 22:10

Why?

Ozanj · 30/05/2024 22:10

DS is 4 and recently lifted his 7 stone cousin clean off the ground. So a grown man should be able to do 9 stones

NewName24 · 30/05/2024 22:11

I too want some context

Carrying out a burning building in a fireman's lift ?
Over the threshold when newly married ?
Off the pitch, when injured?
In the air a la Dirty Dancing ?
Subtly outside in a big suitcase to bury under the patio?
Down a mountainside after a sprained ankle ?
Or literally just lift an upright person 1cm off the ground and put them back down again?

soupfiend · 30/05/2024 22:11

Im not so sure. Everyone seems sure this is easy

I couldnt lift someone of 9 stone and I weigh 11 stone.

My partner can just lift me so my feet are off the floor and dump me back down again. He is 12ish stone.

lljkk · 30/05/2024 22:15

"Easily" no: 9 stone is a lot! It's what, 54 kg? Most men would find 50kg lift a big effort. Excluding men who have injuries, frailty, disability, still a lot to heave. They can probably do it, just not "easily"

My dad is 6'4" & no way he could lift more than about 5 kg. Even that would be an effort. He's pretty old & starting to be frail. I reckon he last had ability to lift 50kg about 20 years ago.

BIWI · 30/05/2024 22:15

I'm 5ft 2in and my starting (i.e. warm-up) deadlift weight is 110lbs, which is only shy 16lbs of a 9 stone person. My PB is 80kg which is 12 stone 6lbs.

soupfiend · 30/05/2024 22:17

I cant lift my own suitcase and thats about 20kg

I also cant lift my bike and thats about 22kg

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 30/05/2024 22:22

oh sorry @CJ0374 - but yes, lifting teens/ teens lifting up parents/siblings, normal thing.

also if you are a short woman- even if you aren’t super thin- men will often lift you. It’s a thing (and annoying). So yep, I’d just assume most men can lift a 9 stone woman.

LondonQueen · 30/05/2024 22:23

Yes, though I'd probably be able to as an average sized women height worse, size 8, goes to the gym regularly.

Zwicky · 30/05/2024 22:30

From a heap on the ground - not necessarily

A standing person where you can just put your arms around their waist and lift - yes, mostly

beergiggles · 30/05/2024 22:35

But why do you want to know?

LondonFox · 30/05/2024 23:28

CJ0374 · 30/05/2024 20:52

Can we have more context OP? Like why?

According to legal manual handling guidelines, the maximum safe lifting weight for a woman is 16kg.
And for men, the maximum safe lifting weight is 25kg.

9 stone is 57kg, so more than double what OH&S would allow-IF its a work setting.

There is a really small chance OP will reveal she got lorries comming in eight or ten hours a day for the next 45 years full of unconscious or dead woman that need to be lifted and carried around.

Because weight guidance you quoted are made for frequent work based lifting in UK.
Many European countries have double weight.

If men can handle 25kg hours on end for almost 50 years it is reasonable to assume one can lift 60 and carry it around a bit.

This. DD probably 110lbs will attempt to do it to DH, at twice her weight. I lift both of them.

We're quite weird though. I'd hate to be a normal, proper person in our house. Sorry mum!

AngryHedgehog · 30/05/2024 23:49

That's less than the mean mass of a female adult in the UK.

I daresay the mean mass of UK women is pretty hefty by world standards!
