Village Fete Bag Dilemma

felicmargo · 30/05/2024 12:37

Here's a bit of a first world problem, but here goes. Am helping to organise a local village fete. You know the sort of thing. Event of the year in the village (yes, I don't get out much!). One of the organisers has donated a load of stuff for the raffle. All new, and very kind. But there are two gross fake designer bags, that of the very faked initialled variety. I am worried about including these because a) they're fake and as such illégal to sell, if not give away, and b) even if I made it clear they were fakes, it would lower the tone and mske everything tacky. However, I don't want to hurt this person's feelings. YANBU = it's fake, don't use it and explain to her and YABU = mark it as fake and give it away, who cares?

Well mark them, but don’t put fake, use reproduction, copy, or lookalike or something.

Mrsjayy · 30/05/2024 12:50

I'd put them in a tombola separately or on a stall to sell then you are not giving them to raffle winners who don't want them. Some people love an ugly handbag even if they are fake. I'm trying to think of a way to say fake and ugly that will sell 😂

Mrsjayy · 30/05/2024 12:52

I don't think they are illegal to give away if you are not calling the LV or Gucci.

Mrsjayy · 30/05/2024 12:54

Oh the word I'm looking for is Dupe.

Springwatch123 · 30/05/2024 12:55

Option 3) - I would just not include them, and if she asks, say that you had too much stuff for the raffle. She may not even notice they’re missing.

LiarLiarKnickersAblaze · 30/05/2024 12:56

Hahahahaha

sorry

Yes - stick them on the bric a brac stall marked as dupes

But then the op.is left with fugly handbags to deal with.

comedycentral · 30/05/2024 12:56

It's not going to lower the tone 🙄Someone is bound to love them and you could always put a note in them to say they are not genuine. It saves them going to landfill.

Agree with this.
Call them e.g. Chanel style bag

I doubt anyone is expecting to win an actual designer handbag at a village fête.

MothralovesGojira · 30/05/2024 12:59

In our charity shop we use the term 'xyz style of bag' - perfectly legal and makes it obvious that it's a fake without saying so. If it's that offensive or worrying for you then off load the bags to a charity shop and pop a donation into the funds instead.

MothralovesGojira · 30/05/2024 13:02

Sorry I missed that they're new. In that case I'd still include them in the raffle as long as they're described as a 'fashion bag' and they have sales tags on. If the tags are missing then it's a bit shit to include them in a raffle.

Mostlycarbon · 30/05/2024 15:20

I think that would be a bit crap/tacky in a raffle. Is there a bric a brac stall?

MumblesParty · 30/05/2024 15:55

Put them on a stall, so people can choose to buy them if they want to. No one wants a shit raffle prize.

AliCB · 02/06/2024 07:00

As others have said, state that these bags are reproductions of genuine brands. Are they well made? If they are, some people may actually like them, or if not, those that win them can give them to younger teenagers who might appreciate them.
I really wouldn't worry too much, as really the main ethos of a village fete is to have fun and help support in raising funds for whatever local causes you are supporting.
I've organised events before and you will never please all of the people all of the time. Those that count will support and appreciate you.

ManilowBarry · 02/06/2024 07:16

'Designer inspired.' 😬🙄

Personally I would tell her that you can't sell or raffle them as they are counterfeit.

Dangermoose5 · 02/06/2024 07:57

No-one expects a "non-shit" raffle prize surely?! 😀

Bargoed · 02/06/2024 08:25

It's against the law to sell them even if you use some cutesty label of faux/dupe/inspired by etc - they are fraudulent copies of companies copyrighted products and are often made by underage or trafficked workers funded and funding gang/drug money.

Either give them back to her orthrow them away - see if there is a shiny spine in the box you can put in the raffle instead

Pastryface · 02/06/2024 08:34

Eh? Grin

saraclara · 02/06/2024 08:40

Where on earth do you live, where you have to worry about 'lowering the tone' in a raffle? 😅

elfies · 02/06/2024 09:19

I've never had a designer handbag in my life , and wouldn't recognise one if it jumped up and hit me , so maybe someone like me will appreciate a bag 'in the style of '

CrapBucket · 02/06/2024 09:22

Just include them along with everything else, no one will care less. If you do something else with them it could start a rumour that you ‘stole a designer handbag’ so I wouldn’t ever go there.

IglesiasPiggl · 02/06/2024 09:26

Just stick them in with all the other prizes. The draw will go something like "And now we have a box of chocolates, that's ticket number 123. Moving on, it's a Chanel style bag, ticket 456. Next we have the local artist print, ticket 789". And so on. Village fetes are the very epitome of crap raffle prizes, I don't think you need to worry.

wizarddry · 02/06/2024 09:29

Give them back. You don't want the cops on you.

goingdownfighting · 02/06/2024 09:35

Fill them with sweets and put them on the tombola. Give the stall holder a bit of a laugh.
