Butter left out in a butter dish

I have always kept my butter out in a butter dish with a lid. For as long as I can remember this was the done thing in order to have spreadable real butter. I literally thought this was what butter dishes were invented for.

Just read that you're not actually supposed to keep butter out for longer than 2 days.

How did I not know this!!! Mine stays out for weeks sometimes until the butter is all used up.

Well noone's dropped dead yet which I'll take as as a good sign. But please tell me I'm not the only one who's done this!

Salted butter is a preserved food. Two days my arse. We eat proper butter, from a butter dish which sits in the cupboard. Usually get through a block a week unless we’re baking, and then it gets used faster.

Butters been around longer than fridges. We didn’t have a fridge till I was about 10. I always keep mine out and try and find a cool spot in summer

Middleagedspreadisreal · 29/05/2024 21:16

I use margarine and keep it in the fridge 🤷‍♀️

squishee · 29/05/2024 21:55

I've switched to ghee. Easy to make, tastes more buttery than butter, is spreadable and keeps for months in a jar at room temp.

I could of wrote this word for word exactly the same. I think we all have the same glass dish with a cow on it .

I dint think hunter goes off unless it gets very warm and even the it just turns into ghee.
However if you get crumbs / jam in it them it would go off I think.

It won't be ghee until the water and solids have been evaporated off / filtered out.

I am an actual adult and I am perfectly capable of telling if butter has gone off. If it has I won’t eat it. As yet, even over the hottest summers this has yet to happen.

I need to get my eyes checked I read the title as 'Butler left out butter dish'

🤣

It will be fine. We leave ours out in a glass dish. You will know instantly by the taste if it’s ‘off’. But in the last 50 years I’ve never had any problem.

Longma · 30/05/2024 08:51

We use a butter dish and leave it on the counter, not in the fridge.
If it is sunny I make sure it is in a shaded spot.

If it is very warm it will go in the fridge.

Did the same as a child so I've managed to survive for 50 years, no,issues so far from it.

Nettie1964 · 30/05/2024 09:17

We go through a block every 2 days. But I leave it out all the time thought that's what a butter dish was for.

Nipsmum · 30/05/2024 13:27

Don't worry we didn't have a fridge when I was at home. Butter was kept in the pantry then.

RedPringleGirl · 30/05/2024 15:38

Can't believe my boring thread is still going.

Who knew there would be so much interest in butter😂

Ours isn't allowed out I taste butter going rancid so early and I cant stand the taste. I call warm butter vomit butter. I think it tastes horrid.

Hurryuphumphreygeorgeiswaiting · 30/05/2024 20:33

Never had a problem. Always use a butter dish and leave it on the work top.

RaininSummer · 30/05/2024 20:34

I only put mine in the fridge if the weather is really hot so basically hardly ever in the UK. It's always been fine.

Motherrr · 30/05/2024 21:01

I leave real butter and vegan butter out for weeks sometimes and have never had a problem! shrugs

HumphreysCorner · 30/05/2024 21:43

Lovely block of butter is kept in the cupboard and spreadable is in the fridge.

FlipFlop1987 · 31/05/2024 21:57

I’m so surprised so many do this. I’ve never considered leaving it out the fridge and I don’t know anyone else who does. I mean you buy it from the fridge section…

Yes. And I keep butter that is in reserve in the fridge but once it’s in the dish it’s out.

KAT0779 · 05/06/2024 13:44

My mum has done this for years without any issues. I often think should I do it myself to have proper butter rather than the spreadable type that stays in the fridge which is mixed with different oil.
