Butter left out in a butter dish

RedPringleGirl · 28/05/2024 13:23

I have always kept my butter out in a butter dish with a lid. For as long as I can remember this was the done thing in order to have spreadable real butter. I literally thought this was what butter dishes were invented for.

Just read that you're not actually supposed to keep butter out for longer than 2 days.

How did I not know this!!! Mine stays out for weeks sometimes until the butter is all used up.

Well noone's dropped dead yet which I'll take as as a good sign. But please tell me I'm not the only one who's done this!

Ours lives in a lidded butter dish on the side throughout the year. Maybe in a heatwave I'd put it away and when we go away. I put out about a third of a block at a time. Never noticed any rancid taste or been ill.

My tiny bugbear is that holiday homes rarely seem to have butter dishes.

Haha - mine does!

And a proper ceramic teapot.

Clawedino · 28/05/2024 15:02

I've also left it out, and then like you realised butter should be in the fridge! We have also not been harmed by the mistake.

Blueuggboots · 28/05/2024 15:08

We have a temperature controlled butter dish get me!...it's awesome!

mitogoshi · 28/05/2024 15:09

I keep mine out for most of the year, not killed me yet!

I have Brittany salted butter in a proper glass butter dish. I keep back up butter in the fridge but once it’s ’on the go’ it’s in the dish and on the side in the kitchen. My kitchen doesn’t get direct sunlight so it doesn’t get too hot even in the height of summer. I’m the only one who has butter and it’s not gone off yet.

French butter keeper... stores the butter surrounded by water .. to keep it fresh and soft.

For some reason, Instagram keeps showing me these. Underneath there are always hundreds of comments from French people saying they’ve never heard of them and just use a normal dish.

Ours lives in a dish in a cupboard. If we left it out, the cat would try and break into it.

Leave it out! If you forget to put the lid on and then find smeary marks on the surface- it's the cat. Grin

If you find odd little holes in the surface -check for hens.

Mine used to wander into the kitchen if the back door was left open and they LOVED butter.

KreedKafer · 28/05/2024 15:25

Provided you're leaving it in a cool spot and not in direct sunlight or next to the oven or something, it's likely to be fine unless you take ages to use it up. It usually only goes off rapidly (or separates) if it's warm or if you get bits of other food in it.

I used to do this but don't now as I buy unsalted butter

Even unsalted butter can last ages. I don't know if it lasts as long as unsalted butter, but it does last a fair while.

I use a glass butter dish with a cow on the lid - butter stays out till it's finished - could be a couple of weeks. But we live in North West and it rarely gets that hot....

I've got the same butter dish. Mine is out all the time. We probably get 2 weeks a year of very hot weather...........

shearwater2 · 28/05/2024 15:26

If you find the butter dish empty, check for my family.

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat OMG my ladies love butter! I Try to keep them out of the house though, so thanks for the tip! ( I can hear them discussing this already! )

dottiedodah · 28/05/2024 15:53

We have a stainless steel butter dish. It keeps butter very cool (unless an absolute heatwave) and we are in the south! About £20 .00 from Lakeland

Getonwitit · 28/05/2024 15:58

You know you can cut the block of butter into halves, quarters etc and leave some in the fridge and some in the butter dish, that way it won't go rancid.

Cookerhood · 28/05/2024 13:24

Mine is out all the time! The salt preserves it. When it's hot I do cut off a lump to keep in the butter dish rather than put it all out at once

What if it's unsalted butter 🧈 🤔

Verv · 28/05/2024 16:00

I leave it out on a covered butter dish, but then again I live in the borders so its rarely above 11 degrees :D

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/05/2024 16:03

I always keep mine in a covered butter dish out of the fridge but I only put half a block out at a time because there's only two of us.

mathanxiety · 28/05/2024 16:05

Mine is always out on the counter in its dish. It can get really hot here, but the worst thing that's happened is some melting around the edges. If it's out for a few weeks I wipe it off, wash the dish, and start again with a new stick (our butter comes wrapped in "sticks").

I'd be interested in the source of the pronouncement about butter going off.

If it's US advice bear in mind that leaving butter out in a Florida summer is a bit different to even the hottest UK weather.

I'm in the US (north-central). My butter is always out.

People in Florida and most of the South have AC on all the time, keeping their homes liveable.

muddyford · 28/05/2024 16:07

Mine is always out unless it starts turning to liquid.

NeonSky · 28/05/2024 16:08

Same!

We grew up eating butter everyday that was left out in a butter dish….

Also live in the NW, it’s rarely warm and our kitchen is cool all year round. In winter it’s like a fridge. Seriously.

suburburban · 28/05/2024 16:10

I leave mine out, never caused a problem

This is what I do too. ^^
