Not an AIBU, but posting for traffic as really worried.
20 year old DD has arrived at JFK airport to find connecting flight to South Carolina cancelled due to signalling issues. The next connecting flight will go 7am tomorrow morning. There are no earlier flights to any nearby airports available.
DD has decided to spend the night at JFK airport. I am worried she will fall asleep and get robbed of her phone/money. Anyone else had this situation to deal with? Any advice or tips anyone?

You paid nearly FIVE HUNDRED QUID for a few hours in a hotel room rather than saying "Oh bad luck darling but I'm sure you'll be fine in the airport. Text me in the morning"?! You are an absolute mug OP.

@StripedTomatoes My money, my choice as to what I think is worth paying for.

What was the actual reason? They often try to get away with that first to avoid paying out.

Signalling failure apparently.

Second that. And I would have counted myself lucky that there was a vacancy over the Memorial Day Week-end.

Could there be a scam here ? Have you spoken to your daughter or just had a message ?

Signalling failure apparently.

Never ever ever heard of “signaling failure” in my time in airline flying, sounds like a railway term TBH…

TBF if that was offered by ground crew they may well have been having a hard day and have been known to offer up vague/inexact terms.

What is undeniable is the weather up the eastern seaboard and elsewhere was really bad PM 27th (widespread thunderstorms) and there were lots of flights disrupted as a result, including many of JFK…so if your DD got stuck PM 27th I suspect that’s the reason.

Maybe one of the guys who waves those paddles around on the tarmac called in sick 😂

Still confused TBH by why the signaling word has been used at all….I guess at a stretch it might be used to describe in some really old fashioned way quaint way communications in general, but it’s not in the aviation vernacular in that context…the days of “sending a signal” or similar have long gone.

About the only context I actually can think off where “signaling” might be used would be at a techie level in discussions between the flight crew and engineers, not really the level of vocab that pilots, or the cabin crew or the ground crew go in to when telling passengers about delays…

Looking at the news and other reports I can see at least one legit reason why flights were delayed or cancelled ex-JFK on the 27th, but as for “signaling” think something has got lost in translation…

Needmoresleep · 30/05/2024 20:47

I suspect autocorrect. Scheduling not signalling.

Edited

I am wondering if I misunderstood what DD said! The airline definitely said the cancellation of flight was due to factors beyond their control in any case.
