To want my full title on my badge

I might sound very pedantic here but months ago I went for head of department. Didn’t get it. Was offered another role that involved being a lead though. The HOD role was initially advertised with the curriculum lead role at the time but as I didn’t get his role they wanted me to have curriculum lead so they split it.

On the school website he is listed as Head of maths and curriculum lead. And I’m still listed as “teacher of mathematics” however I interviewed for the curriculum lead role after I didn’t get hod role so it feels like it should be mine by rights. Also, his badge says “teacher of maths and curriculum lead” mines just “teacher of mathematics”

This may just be my autistic mind being pedantic. But honestly. I worked for that role and interviewed for it. It’s mine by rights.

AIBU for feeling annoyed and unrecognised?

Absolutely! While it may be an everyday sexism “We forgot” (translates to, “We didn’t expect you to kick up a fuss”), you have earned your place and these little details matter when it comes to the respect of your colleagues, parents, etc - and also for resume purposes if you are looking elsewhere in the future. You need your title changed on website as well as badge.

HeddaGarbled · 25/05/2024 00:09

It sounds like they created an entirely new role just for you, whereas previously the two aspects of the senior position went together. The job title badges are a reflection of what’s always been done before and no-one (except you) has noticed that they don’t quite fit this new situation.

You’re an anomaly. If you want your badge changed, you need to ask. Up to you whether that’s more important to you than feeling petty.

PostMenPatWithACat · 25/05/2024 00:10

Just ask.

Amanitacae · 25/05/2024 00:13

It’s definitely not petty. Tell them your badge needs to be updated since you changed roles.

Jeannie88 · 25/05/2024 00:16

Not pedantic at all, it's your job title, it's just been remiss of crediting it officially badge wise. Xx

You're not, you're being factual.

MouseMama · 25/05/2024 02:52

Not petty at all, of course you want your job title on your badge and website.

When I went into my current role there was already a man a little older than me in an equivalent position. He didn’t want to be my boss as we have complimentary skill sets and brought me in as his equal so we have the same job title (although he earns a bit more as has more experience). All the IT was set up as though he was my line manager such as my holiday requests going through to him. I had to be petty and query it all as I discovered various glitches where HR and IT has just assumed he was my boss because…. he’s a man.

Blueblell · 25/05/2024 05:47

It sounds like his badge hasn’t been changed either ?

Aussieland · 25/05/2024 05:51

Yeah when I got my leadership position it still had the old guy on the website for ages. They managed to change the man who got his position at the same time as mine and find a photo for him. Just ask- it’s important it’s clear who is lead for things otherwise you will get cut out of things by other people not realising

PurpleFlower1983 · 25/05/2024 08:14

Stuff like this doesn’t bother me as long as my pay reflects my role but I would be annoyed that his has been changed and yours hasn’t!

user1483387154 · 25/05/2024 08:20

Just ask them nicely to update your new title. You know full well schools are hectic and as a priority in the grand scheme of things this will not have been one.

LoobyDop · 25/05/2024 08:33

You aren’t being petty, it matters. In my previous role, I was “senior”, but I never used to say it as I thought it didn’t matter. And then someone sent out a list of everyone involved in a project, and left the “senior” out of my title. Not only that, but he had incorrectly added it to some of my male colleagues. When I set him straight, he said he had just assumed. Now I always insist on my proper title, and when I took my new job I didn’t accept it until the title was adjusted upwards.

MyFirstName · 25/05/2024 11:05

If this is within a school, the person who does the badges and the person who updates the website just hasn't clocked they need doing.

There may have been a generic announcement...but not anything to trigger action.

Just ask them.

Theredoubtableskins · 25/05/2024 11:13

You interviewed for the curriculum lead after they decided to split it from the HOD role, but did they confirm that you got that job and they have split the roles up? Is it actually your new job title?

If yes, then absolutely contact them and say it needs updated as it has your job title wrong.

I used to see this kind of thing a lot at work and probably drove people mad by continually challenging it but I do think that pulling people up on this kind of casual sexism is important.
I was once on the panel for an event which was widely advertised around the Trust and was on everyone's screensaver and speakers were listed as Prof Joe Bloggs, Ageing Doc, Mary Smith and Dr John Doe. I made them change it. Said I didn't care if they wrote Joe, Ageing, Mary and John if they wanted but if Prof Bloggs and Dr Doe were given their titles then Dr Doc and Dr Smith should bloody well have theirs too. I used to see the same thing in meeting minutes frequently too and always got them changed. Don't care which direction it goes in, first names or titles for all is fine, but blatantly treating male staff more formally than their female peers is not.
OP, if you have a job title that you're entitled to and is not being used then of course you can insist.

Ffs casual sexism, are you being serious ?

Theredoubtableskins · 25/05/2024 12:03

@user1483387154

What do you call it when men are all referred to with their professional titles (like Doctor so and so) when the women are simply referred to by their name, with their hard earned titles omitted. So everyone is the room knows the man has earned his doctorate but the woman’s achievements and position within the organisation are ignored.

This person says their title has not been updated, simply ask not everything is sexist. Seriously give your head a wobble.

If this was more than a once off , then fair enough look into it. Schools have more priorities than to update a label. Just a gentle reminder is needed

Wondering this also. Op says interviewed for it and is there's by right but doesn't actually confirm they got this title

OnGoldenPond · 25/05/2024 14:05

It's not petty to want your correct title and position to be properly recognised on the website and your work badge. You earned that title through your own merits and it's important to make sure you get the credit. These things matter a lot when you apply for new positions.

You can be damn sure that a man wouldn't think twice about insisting on this. You get no prizes for trying to be nice and no trouble in the workplace. You just get overlooked.

Quirkyme · 25/05/2024 19:43

Why would you not want your full title on your badge?

How do you get to this point in your career but are scared to ask to have your full job title on your badge.
