To reduce hours when labour win election

Parttimeplay · 24/05/2024 01:40

I fall into the “60%” tax bracket. With the upcoming elections and knowing the government always hammer the middle ground….woudlnt it make more sense for me to cut my hours for a more relaxed life, eligibility for childcare, reduced tax?

Maybe think about the hard-working people who have to use food banks?

I’m not saying the tories haven’t made a mess. I’m just saying in my situation, when labour get it, it’s just going to become pointless for me. Increased taxes, vat on schooling etc etc

Aren't people on here normally bleating about how they'd happily pay more taxes to fund everyone else and their kids?

But different now its coming to it, eh.

Do you think Labour will reduce, maintain or increase taxes?

Did you think the Tories would reduce, maintain or increase taxes?

People who want to throw more in to the pot have a variety of mechanisms they could use if they wanted to do that. It would require more substance than just broadcasting their virtue on MN though.

Because it probably wouldn’t go down well with my employer. But now looking long term and seeing opportunities for private school etc reducing it doesn’t seem worth it

There are more important things in life than your employer's opinion.

Sounds like a fully paid up member of the conservative party……

Tory hq won't be pleased when they see this poster has accidentally implied that people need to worry less about their employer's unreasonableness under a Labour govt.

@MikeRafone yes my goal 20 years ago was to achieve a decent career, have a wonderful family home and a happy family.
20 years later, pay has stalemated, house prices have rocketed. I hadn’t planned on living in a 3 bed semi in a grimy area of London working long hours and paying £2k a month for nursery fees

Well that's the legacy of 14 years of Tory government.

changeison · 24/05/2024 08:31

Lifesd · 24/05/2024 02:10

This is partly why the country is in such a mess and also why there may well be a huge brain drain out of it. Constantly hammering people for doing well is just not conducive for a well functioning economy. I totally get it OP - why bother I’d do the same. All the people crowing about Labour winning who do they think will fund all this amazing change that is set to come?

spot on.

Needanewname42 · 24/05/2024 08:31

Charlie2121 · 24/05/2024 02:51

No it didn’t. Labour brought in the removal of the personal allowance for people earning over 100k in 2009.

It was introduced by Alistair Days long under Gordon Brown’s government as a parting shot just before they lost the GE.

Ot effectively adds a £5k bill on top of normal tax rates for higher earners.

Labour has also stated they want to add VAT to school fees which the OP states will then become unaffordable for her.

So that’s 2 key policies, both of which will badly impact her, both instigated by Labour.

That’s without them being in power for 14 years as well so you can imagine the concern higher earners have with maybe a decade of Labour government ahead.

Pensions will be next. They already have previous for that. We’ll end up as one huge dependent state but with fewer and fewer people at the top willing to continue funding it.

Labour introduced it. Tory have had 14 years to increase the threshold or drop that plan all together.

£100k was a heck of a high income 14years ago. Its now catching Doctors and middle management grades.

Zonder · 24/05/2024 08:32

mrsdineen2 · 24/05/2024 08:17

And record debt.

But Labour..

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 24/05/2024 08:34

Don't be silly about private education being for the middle earners. 5% of people send their under 16s to private school. Hardly middle earners.
Anyway OP life is short. Why not cut back, enjoy your children being children and relax a bit. You'll still have loads of money!

TinyYellow · 24/05/2024 08:34

You at right OP. Labour governments tend to take away the incentives to earn as much as you can and take personal responsibility.

Just like last time, people were only working sixteen hours a week despite their employers offering them more because the tax credits system made it pointless. It made more sense financially to do less work. This is one of many reasons I won’t be voting Labour.

Do you think Labour will reduce, maintain or increase taxes?

Two non answers to your question

Spendonsend · 24/05/2024 08:36

Dont you want to see what they actually do in their first budget and then react to that.

If you dont like your current tax situation under the conservaties, by all means do what you like.

I dont think labour have actually suggested loads of expensive projects and policies to fund. They know they are in a rearranging the deckchairs situation.

K8ate · 24/05/2024 08:29

Is that your stock answer for anyone who has a question about what you think Labour will in governance? Do you have an answer?

Elizo · 24/05/2024 08:37

Private schools get 3-4 times the per pupil funding that state do. State schools have been forced to make savings over the years, can private not do the same? That way fees don't need to go up. I was a governor of a state school and we had to make all sorts of savings to keep costs down and that is from a much lower starting point.

Right? It's hardly a controversial question.

Katemax82 · 24/05/2024 08:39

My stepson earns over 100k self employed and is really worried he is going to be fleeced under a labour government

FallingBackIntoTheHedgeMaze · 24/05/2024 08:39

This is insane. The Tories froze the tax bands, causing fiscal drag to make us all worse off. Liz Truss sent our mortgages rocketing. They presided over high inflation, weak growth, a disastrous and costly Brexit, spiralling energy costs and left us all paying enormous amounts of money for decimated public services while water company shareholders waltz off with billions in dividends after filling our rivers with shit. The Tories have trashed the economy, stolen public money, left everything in ruins and people want to blame Labour?

As a high earner with kids in private school, I will be voting for Labour because I was far better off under their government than the shitshow of the Tories and I will be again. And hey, maybe I'll even be able to see a GP or a dentist or rely on clean drinking water too. Maybe fewer children will grow up in poverty, maybe food bank usage can reduce, maybe we can have a country that works again. The alternative is a Tory government of staggering corruption and ineptitude continuing to make everyone but themselves poorer. I'd rather take the hit on my kids' school fees and live somewhere functioning.

leafybrew · 24/05/2024 08:40

@TinyYellow

Maybe try LibDems then - because I'm struggling to see one positive aspect to continuing the shitshow that has been the Tories in the last 14 years.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/05/2024 08:41

@Katemax82 how so? He's worried a Labour government are going to overcharge or swindle him?

I get fiscal drag is a thing - as a higher rate tax layer I get caught too, especially at our (very modest) annual bonus time. However a lot of this griping shows why it is beneficial for most people to support the development of a wider tax base and tax capital, capital gains and inheritance more and burden income less. However people seem curiously opposed to such policies.

There is a curious lack of imagination for many voters when it comes to tax.

leafybrew · 24/05/2024 08:41

@FallingBackIntoTheHedgeMaze

Basically what they've said more articulately but translates as 'shit show'
