So, shopped at Aldi earlier today where you have to insert £1 to get a trolley. I usually drive into a parking space, but reversed in today. While loading the shopping into my car I rested the trolley in front of my bonnet. I had three large bags of shopping, which I took one by one to the boot. Once I finished loading the last bag I realised someone had taken off with my trolley! Had a good look around but couldn't see anyone close by.
I was really hacked off, not just because of the £1 I'd lost, but because I couldn't believe someone would do this!
AIBU to think whoever did it is A CF?

Could win a medal for CF & stealth.

Would love to see the CCTV of said CF in action.Grin

Supermarket trolleys bring out strangeness in people. I had someone shouting at me for abandoning my trolley in a car park when I was doing something similar (in my case it was in front of the boot and I was putting the bag inside). I pointed out that I couldn’t actually drive out of the space unless I moved the trolley, plus I wanted my £1 back! He harrumphed, tried to justify himself, then stomped off.

adunno · 23/05/2024 00:38

Yeah. They’re not a cf. just took a trolly on way into shop. Think about it as paying them to take it back for you if that eases it for you

asdfgasdfg · 23/05/2024 03:19

DH walked to the trolley park with £1 at the ready. Lady said " here have this one", he took her trolley and gave her the pound. When he went to put it away there was a token in it. He was fuming, never got caught again.

PointWriter · 23/05/2024 04:42

They probably didn't realise it had £1 in it? Not all supermarkets have those trolleys.

If they did grab it to get the £1 I'd assume they must need it more than I do!

I always use tokens though, you can get x10 for £1.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/05/2024 05:36

Maybe the shop thought it was abandoned and cleared it away

Willmafrockfit · 23/05/2024 05:38

a friend offered to give someone a pound for their trolley, which they accepted, only to find it had no pound or anything in it at all to reclaim!

LumpyandBumps · 23/05/2024 06:02

Back in the days of ‘booze cruises’ DH and I had a trolley each. Whilst we were both distracted looking at something someone pushed our trolleys together and stole the 1 Euro coin.
We then had to find another coin to separate them.

Nothing wrong with that, a token is worth a pound and you'll always be able to get a trolley

When I have offered this, the receiver always has a really good check to see if it contains a quid, yet they are the ones who singled*me out to ask 😂

You missed the point, the OP said it was one of those trollies where you put a £1 coin in to release it from the trolly store and you only get your £1 coin back when you return the trolly and release the coin with the metal bar.

so the bloke got the OPs trolley and got to keep the £1 coin when he takes the trolley back.

What bloke? Nobody said a 'bloke' stole the trolley?

My 9 year old son (now 18) grabbed a woman's trolley she had just finished emptying at lidl, she suddenly called "stop! There's a pound in it!" I felt so embarrassed but luckily had a pound of my own to give her. I hadn't expected my son to do that

But you won't be able to actually buy anything with it!

Same as a pound then these days

Cheerupmaggi · 23/05/2024 07:41

In our local asda, the car park is big and awkward and on a hill. Sometimes teens would come up to you when you were unloading your shopping and ask if they could take the trolley back for you and keep the pound. I always said yes, it saved me a job and I admired their initiative!
Not really relevant to what happened here but brought back a memory! Wonder if kids still do that anywhere.

Cookerhood · 23/05/2024 07:44

I discovered the other day that in the US Aldi (don't know about other supermarkets) the trolley slot takes 25c (so much less than £1). It's a thing to do your good deed for the day & leave your 25c in there!

Couldn't he use the token for every shop after that?

2catsandhappy · 23/05/2024 07:55

I am pleased to offer a small story to counter this CF. I had a trolley I just could not get the token out of. Should be simple. Nope. A kind lady got a member of staff who brought a pound coin over and I ended up £1 better off that day.

What if paying someone to take her trolley back isn't in her budget?

I've had times where every penny is accounted for, and it's been so tight that a pound would make a difference. These cheeky fuckers will probably keep the pound too, and not just leave it unlocked for the next person.

Cuppachuchu · 23/05/2024 09:12

Not as bad as the poor woman who stopped to get one of the free magazines in tesco and in the seconds it took, someone walked off with her full trolley! At Christmas as well.

This reminds me, I go to a music festival every year where there are fairgrounds and amusements on all weekend. Four day camping event, so a lot of luggage to carry.

On the way back to our cars, a good mile or so walk, the lads who had worked on the fairgrounds all weekend were all coming up to people offering to carry their bags for a couple of £/a donation. Genius! I was struggling, lone, small female with a bad back. Paid them a lot more than they asked for and got to have a nice chat on the way back without breaking my back. Excellent work fairground lads! They were travellers (I hope that's today's correct term!) And told me some really interesting stories as we walked. Smile

Doesn't that somewhat defeat the purpose of putting money in them in the first place?! The whole point is to encourage people to return their trollies rather than just leave them all over the carpark (or take them home). So if people are just leaving the money in them, there's no incentive to return them..

How lovely! They will have been from the showmen community - they travel but are not classed as part of the 'traveller' community :-)

ManilowBarry · 23/05/2024 09:44

It could have run/rolled away.

There has been an increase of trolleys suffering from depression and running away, many often being found in rivers.

It's very sad. Next time you do your shop make sure you give your trolley a reassuring pat and tell them what a good job they're doing.
