So, shopped at Aldi earlier today where you have to insert £1 to get a trolley. I usually drive into a parking space, but reversed in today. While loading the shopping into my car I rested the trolley in front of my bonnet. I had three large bags of shopping, which I took one by one to the boot. Once I finished loading the last bag I realised someone had taken off with my trolley! Had a good look around but couldn't see anyone close by.
I was really hacked off, not just because of the £1 I'd lost, but because I couldn't believe someone would do this!
AIBU to think whoever did it is A CF?

It could have run/rolled away.

There has been an increase of trolleys suffering from depression and running away, many often being found in rivers.

It's very sad. Next time you do your shop make sure you give your trolley a reassuring pat and tell them what a good job they're doing.

Underrated post 👏

Doesn't that somewhat defeat the purpose of putting money in them in the first place?! The whole point is to encourage people to return their trollies rather than just leave them all over the carpark (or take them home). So if people are just leaving the money in them, there's no incentive to return them..

I see what you're saying, but in practice it usually means homeless people or kids will do the work of taking them back to get the money.

Or Tom Hanks if it's an airport.

😂Does anyone else remember the Alexei Sayle sketch where he was in a supermarket car park with a handful of £1 coins, unchaining the trolleys and telling them "Run away, you're free!" - or words to that effect.

I am pleased to offer a small story to counter this CF. I had a trolley I just could not get the token out of. Should be simple. Nope. A kind lady got a member of staff who brought a pound coin over and I ended up £1 better off that day.

Aren’t you meant to return the £1 coin if they do that? Perhaps you are a CF on another thread…

Sharptonguedwoman · 23/05/2024 12:31

asdfgasdfg · 23/05/2024 03:19

DH walked to the trolley park with £1 at the ready. Lady said " here have this one", he took her trolley and gave her the pound. When he went to put it away there was a token in it. He was fuming, never got caught again.

Why fuming? Tokens are brilliant. He'll never be hunting for £1 coins again.

easylikeasundaymorn · 23/05/2024 12:33

adunno · 23/05/2024 00:38

Yeah. They’re not a cf. just took a trolly on way into shop. Think about it as paying them to take it back for you if that eases it for you

If you dropped a pound on the floor and were going to pick it up, would you be happy that someone who jumped over and nabbed it saved you the effort of bending down???

Op they are a cf BUT given the sheer noise of the trollies in my local aldi I think they probably earned that £1 through sheer stealth!

Im another one who would like to see the cctv footage both for their original crime and then your bemused/angry reaction! 😆

Hankunamatata · 23/05/2024 12:38

That would so annoy me. 😤

I use the trolley token that I keep on my keys. But I'd be hacked off someone took my token as I never carry cash

FadedRed · 23/05/2024 12:46

A few days after the final date for swapping old round £1 coins for the the new many-sided coins, a shopper ‘sold’ me their trolley for a £1, only for me to find out at the end of my shopping that their trolley had an old, round (and no longer legal tender) £1 coin in. I felt a bit conned, tbh. ☹️

SuperGreens · 23/05/2024 12:53

So many CFs out there these days. I was in Sainsburys queuing for customer service with my paid for shopping in bags in the trolley, turned my back on it for a minute and someone helped themselves to it.

Loquesea · 23/05/2024 13:02

RedHelenB · 23/05/2024 06:16

Nothing wrong with that, a token is worth a pound and you'll always be able to get a trolley

No, a token isn’t equivalent to £1, as a PP pointed out you can buy 10 tokens for £1. So there’s plenty wrong with just taking a trolley still in use without asking.

CFs are everywhere. I was in a homeware shop and put some cushions in my trolley, the last in that particular colour. Whilst I was looking at something else a woman actually took the cushions out of my trolley. When I confronted her she said that as I hadn’t actually bought them yet they were as good as still on the shelf WTAF??? I’m ashamed to say a bit of a slanging match ensued, but I kept the cushions.

Miloandfreddy · 23/05/2024 07:39

Same as a pound then these days

What daft nonsense - try paying for a coffee with coins and trolley token. Eejit.

Could win a medal for CF & stealth.

Would love to see the CCTV of said CF in action.Grin

CCTV would also be great to see the look of confusion when OP walked back round her car and found the trolley missing!

Similar happened to me in Sainsbury's once while I was doing my shop. It was a busy aisle, so I'd parked my trolley in a spot then turned around to get something from a shelf a little further down. I took a bit of time choosing and when I turned around to put it in my trolley, it was gone!

I said at the time the CCTV must have been hilarious, as I stood in the fridge aisle, holding a block of cheese, looking around totally lost, wondering where my trolley had gone!

I eventually found a lady with it in the next aisle where she'd got the trolleys muddled up and had left hers behind!

Wow, rude! I stocked up on cheap offal for the dogs one day and a lady started helping herself then was shouting at me in her language when I objected! I have no idea what she was saying, possibly Cantonese. I was very clear that she was not taking stuff out of my trolley!

In one supermarket, my DH couldn't get the quid out of the slot. He needed pliers and asked the security guard if he had tools, but was told 'elf n safety means he wasn't allowed to carry them anymore. DH had to leave behind his quid. He has now 3D printed some plastic ones.

Back in the days of ‘booze cruises’ DH and I had a trolley each. Whilst we were both distracted looking at something someone pushed our trolleys together and stole the 1 Euro coin.
We then had to find another coin to separate them.

this wins 🤣

PointWriter · 23/05/2024 04:42

They probably didn't realise it had £1 in it? Not all supermarkets have those trolleys.

If they did grab it to get the £1 I'd assume they must need it more than I do!

I always use tokens though, you can get x10 for £1.

This was my charitable view - I am confused about which local supermarkets use coins/tokens for trolleys as it's not all of them.

Yes! I was just thinking the same!

Hoppinggreen · 23/05/2024 13:59

Some CF nicked all the (empty) bags out of my trolley once while my back was turned.
Me and a staff member found them a couple of aisles later and tried to claim they were theirs but luckily I had described them to staff member and neither of us were having any of it. They handed them back mumbling about it being a "mistake"

maw1681 · 23/05/2024 14:03

Haha very stealthy!
I use a trolley token that I keep on a key ring and a couple of times when I've taken it back someone's offered me a £1 for the trolley and when I say no sorry but there's a token in it I can't give it to you they've been annoyed!

We used to get those in the church collection when the changeover happened, I either handed them to the bank or put them into the self service machines at Tesco which still took them.

The swine! Should have been keelhauled for that!

Sunnyandsilly · 23/05/2024 14:16

They probably didn’t realise, and just saw an empty trolley. I have most of my shopping delivered, so actually going in is rare for me, it is hugely likely I’d see a random trolley and just go with it, and really not think for one second about the pound.

i suspect it wasn’t cf and more someone didn’t realise.

IclimbedSnowdon · 23/05/2024 15:34

@HiddenBooks I can only imagine my face when I realised the trolley had gone! I stood there for while probably looking quite bemused. I'd also love to see the cctv footage. 😂
Thanks for all your replies and cf stories, they've been a good read!

I had a CF lady try to get a pound off me. She was hanging around the trolley park with an empty trolley (the last one). So I went to give her a pound coin in exchange for the trolley but as I looked down the trolly clearly didn’t have a coin in it or a token, it was empty. So I said thanks and went to take the trolley. “That’s a pound you owe me” she said. Ha ha I laughed thinking she was joking but she was deadly serious. “You don’t get a trolley for free you know” she kept saying. I told her she hadn’t put a coin in it, as it was clearly empty but she kept repeating that I owed her a quid if I wanted the last trolley 😆
