FFS I know I'm not just need to vent.

Ds1 in in his mid 20s. Good job very intelligent. He's been travelling abroad a few times and is there now.

Just been chatting to him and ds2 on WhatsApp. Talking about meerkat code for cinema. I said he should have got his travel insurance through them. He said he doesn't have it! I couldn't fucking believe it.

I've sent a load of scary shit to him. Told him to get it NOW. I'm so angry.

I laid it on the line if anything happens to him it's mad amounts to get back here.

Rant over.

My children are covered on my travel insurance until they are 23, if they are living at home. So it considered “independent” for a few years yet.

the “consequences” can be huge and lifelong. I’d be telling any adult intending to travel uninsured what I thought, whatever their relationship to me.

My DS is but only when he travels with me I think ( off to read small print now lol)

badatdecisions · 21/05/2024 15:53

I don't bother with travel insurance. I don't think it's something people really think about until middle age.

People who are dim don't think about it and then are surprised when no-one contributes to their go fund me.

Anyone with common sense gets it every time.

Unless of course you've got at least £100k in the bank to spend if you need it for medical expenses............

Do you bother with any other insurance? House? Pet? Car?

muddyford · 21/05/2024 16:03

When I first went abroad in the mid-1980s I got travel insurance. A month in the Middle East, including flights, cost £250. Still got insurance.

Elphamouche · 21/05/2024 16:03

I work in travel people loose thousands by not getting travel insurance or the correct insurance and then they can’t go.

I’ve had treatment abroad that cost £40k covered on a £7.50 policy. People who don’t get it are stupid.

OP I’m sorry but insurance is very unlikely to cover him on this current trip.

I was 18. Out of the blue had a fit. Cost £40k in Paris. 2010 so god knows how much now. Don’t be stupid and risk it.

sara and medschool ah ok fair enough. And actually thinking about I almost always set mine up immediately.

We delayed setting ours up this year however as DD was on a waiting list for a brace and because of that our insurer wouldn't even consider covering her. So I waited until the brace was fitted (all gone fine) and once it was a "known " thing they didn't even need to know.

So yes - as you were Grin

I hope we helped! I've had to cancel two holidays over the years, due to health things, and was so grateful to be insured during that pre-trip period. I'd hate anyone to lose lots of money as well as having that same disappointment.

Your username is very apt!

TerrorAustralis · 21/05/2024 16:30

I’ve travelled a lot. Always bought travel insurance, but never claimed, until I did.

I had an accident on holidays. All the premiums we paid for over the years and then some paid us back. My very expensive medical bills, cancelled accommodation and return flights (business class, due to my injury) for the family were paid for. Total costs were five figures, all covered by insurance.

Nope just checked it isn't 🙈
Oh well fingers crossed he gets back in one piece. He only has hand luggage so his suitcase won't be going amiss. Just hope he stays safe? 🤞

@alrightluv you can get insurance once abroad. See my post earlier on in the thread and a few others mentioning Nomads

In a French state hospital? Surprised at that as French citizens wouldn't get charged that much and the EHIC provided equivalent cover

GrandTheftWalrus · 21/05/2024 17:06

toomanytonotice · 21/05/2024 14:08

You don’t pay for 2 years insurance?

you pay for the trip.

so if you book 1.5 years in advance, it won’t cost you any more to cover that trip whether it’s booked then or the week before.

out of interest, how do you book that far in advance? Most airlines don’t release flights until 11 months prior…

I book with jet2. I booked September 2022 in March 2021 and August 2024 in June 2023.

GrandTheftWalrus · 21/05/2024 17:09

And I know I'm only paying for when I'm away however our travel insurance is higher due to dh and when I went to book it would only let me do a year in advance. I have it now even though we aren't away until August.

Spirallingdownwards · 21/05/2024 17:13

Notsonifty50 · 21/05/2024 12:29

His cover won't work for this trip I'm afraid - unless it's an unusual policy. There is normally a statement that you can't have already started your trip at time of purchase.

Some do eg Battleface does as my DS used it and when he wanted to extend gap travels they actually do it by way of purchasing a new consecutive policy.

Had to have drs flown out to fly me home, a prolonged stay on top of the medical stuff sadly.

RampantIvy · 21/05/2024 17:18

A family member developed appendicitis while on a cruise. He had his appendix out in Madeira. Travel insurance paid for the medical treatment and his partner's hotel bill until he was passed as fit to fly.

notacooldad · 21/05/2024 17:21

He is an adult - why are you interfering in his life, OP? Let him do what he wants, and then he can deal with the consequences, whatever they are.
The infantilisation of adult children by some people on this site is just astonishing

I disagree. The son may have not realised all the implications or how expensive medical treatment can be abroad.
I have given my adult sons' advice over stuff and it works the other way as well, they have told me stuff that is helpful to me that I hadn't realised.

As a family we help each other out when we can, none of this 'your own your own pal' nonsense!

Amx · 21/05/2024 17:34

It won't cover his trip if he's already left the uk unless it's a very specific policy.

takemeawayagain · 21/05/2024 17:44

We don't get travel/health insurance for Europe, we rely on our GHIC cards for that. But if he's going outside Europe then worth getting.

Thats risky, the cover you get is limited and wouldn't cover repatriation or similar

GHIC cards won't pay for specialist transport home, accommodation for a partner for an extended stay if you need to stay in hospital or repatriation of a body if the worst happens.

The ignorance on this issue is astounding. If something happened to the OPs DS, she'd feel duty bound to pay his medical bills, transport home and other costs and could face a bill of tens of thousands of pounds if not more if something awful happened like a serious road accident. In some countries even in Europe, eg Spain, the family has to do some of the personal care, so if you're out there alone, you're either going to have to pay, or go out there to feed, bathe him etc.

Then you are a selfish idiot. It will probably be your loved ones that have to pick up the pieces and pay accordingly if anything happens to you

GettingStuffed · 21/05/2024 18:59

My son learned the hard way. Hed booked a weekend away with his then Fiancée. Unfortunately he decided to wait to nearer the time to take out insurance. Unfortunately his wife slipped in work and damaged her knee so they couldn't go. They lost what he'd paid out. He now takes out insurance as soon as they book
