To be angry at ds1 re travel insurance

FFS I know I'm not just need to vent.

Ds1 in in his mid 20s. Good job very intelligent. He's been travelling abroad a few times and is there now.

Just been chatting to him and ds2 on WhatsApp. Talking about meerkat code for cinema. I said he should have got his travel insurance through them. He said he doesn't have it! I couldn't fucking believe it.

I've sent a load of scary shit to him. Told him to get it NOW. I'm so angry.

I laid it on the line if anything happens to him it's mad amounts to get back here.

Rant over.

He's been on 3 trips abroad already this year and is away now.

And he's actually listened his cover starts tomorrow. So I said stay in your room today.

Blimey, if he goes away that frequently he should just get an annual policy and then doesn't have to think about it!

People are so stupid when it comes to travel insurance, yes you hope that you won't ever need it but if you do you really do. My friend flew to Mexico on holiday and 2 days in started getting abdominal pain - turns out it was appendicitis and if she hadn't had travel
Insurance she would have had to pay before they would do the surgery

He is an adult - why are you interfering in his life, OP? Let him do what he wants, and then he can deal with the consequences, whatever they are.
The infantilisation of adult children by some people on this site is just astonishing.

Do you actually realise that it WILL fall to the op if her ds needs medical treatment? I have seen enough situations both professionally and in the press where an adult child is unconscious in hospital without insurance and the family are the ones frantically trying to raise the money for treatment and repatriation. Hardly infantalising 🙄

FoleyHuck · 21/05/2024 13:53

It's possible to buy a policy specifically to cover once your trip has already started so hopefully he's done that OP.

I work in travel and you would not believe how many people don't take insurance out beforehand and are then appalled that they're not due anything back when they need to cancel the trip for some reason.

Thankfully I've never had to claim for anything medical (touch wood) but we live in Jersey and I've had more than one successful claim when I've either been stuck here due to fog and missed an international flight from London, or arrived back in London late and missed our flight home to Jersey.

He should get an annual policy or a bank account that comes with travel insurance, saves doing it for each trip. But honestly he’s an adult and it’s his problem.

Not really. If he has a serious accident or illness and needs medical repatriation, you're not going to just stand by. So it's your money he's risking and therefore your business.

If he is already away, will his cover count for current trip? I can imagine small print ...

I just took out cover for a trip next week and it said that my holiday had to not have already started.

ODFO. If it was one of my friends being stupid I'd read them the riot act too. As would they me. We're human.

Martin Lewis says get insurance as soon as you book however I book 1.5yrs in advance. I'm not paying for 2yrs insurance

You don’t pay for 2 years insurance?

you pay for the trip.

so if you book 1.5 years in advance, it won’t cost you any more to cover that trip whether it’s booked then or the week before.

out of interest, how do you book that far in advance? Most airlines don’t release flights until 11 months prior…

VitaminABCD · 21/05/2024 14:10

I have multi trip world travel insurance for a year

notanotherrokabag · 21/05/2024 14:10

Sure his cover tomorrow is valid? usually very difficult to get if you're already on the trip..........

Moier · 21/05/2024 14:11

It will be invalid now.. you have to get it from the date of travel. If you get it after you travel it becomes void.. so he won't beable to use it.

ashiningbeaconinspace · 21/05/2024 14:13

Most travel insurance is only valid if you buy it when still in the UK. It's possible to get medical cover if your trip has already started. It's more expensive as it's a specialist product. Ask my son how I know this!! Try Googling "Travel medical insurance already abroad"
www.google.com/search?q=travel+medical+insurance+already+abroad&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-gb&client=safari

I think travel insurance and international health cover are two different things though.

Travel insurance- I'm meh about as every time I tried to claim (broken car seat, lost suitcase, cancelled flights) it was always rejected. They've never paid and I've spent fair few grand over the years

Health cover/insurance is obviously essential international cover for this doesn't cost that much at all. Dumb not to have it

Travel insurance doesn’t just cover lost bags and cancelled flights.

they will cover cancellation if you can’t travel, for example you break a leg, or suffer a bereavement the week before.

if someone breaks into your hotel room or you get mugged and steals everything you’re covered- and especially if passports or other documents get stolen.

my travel insurance covers a long list of things. Including flying home early for family emergencies.

why would you only get health cover and not general insurance? It can’t be that much cheaper.

alrightluv · 21/05/2024 14:15

Nope just checked it isn't 🙈
Oh well fingers crossed he gets back in one piece. He only has hand luggage so his suitcase won't be going amiss. Just hope he stays safe? 🤞

'Standard' travel insurance will not cover you if you're already away. He'll need to specifically look for cover that will apply once the trip has already started. It's more expensive, but not earth shattering amounts

Why do you think?

If your adult DC was stuck in a hospital abroad with no means to pay for medical treatment would you just say "serve you right" and ignore any please for help?

I don't understand people who don't take out travel insurance straight away when they book a trip abroad as it covers cancellations as well.

You don't pay for two years! You just pay for the length of your holiday. But it means that you're covered for cancellation throughout that longer period.
It will be the same price either you take it out a year in advance or a day in advance of your trip. So it would be mad to miss out of all that cancellation cover!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/05/2024 13:45

Agree ... Providing we can afford to lose the deposit I now time travel insurance for a few days before payment of balance is due

See my post above! You don't pay any more to take out cover a year in advance than you do a day in advance! You only pay for the period you're away!

I think one of us needs to write to Martin Lewis to tell him to make this clear! It never occurred to me that anyone thought they needed to pay for the entire period from the day they book/take out/pay for the insurance!

He needs to be buying some more expensive cover to start while he's abroad. It's not luggage you need it for, but repatriation after a medical problem can be a six figure sum.

Odiebay · 21/05/2024 15:15

It cost £8.9k to get my friend back from Brazil when she passed there. No travel insurance. Horrendous.

Also in Greece they wanted €100 for an anti sickness injection. Gave them my paperwork instead

At least he knows now!

SilkFloss · 21/05/2024 13:37

Oh, and while we're on the subject of infantilising our adult kids get them to tell you who they're insured with. I realised recently when DS was on a long-haul trip that if anything happened to him whereby he was incapacitated (or dead) I would have had no idea who to contact to claim.

We’ve always done this. Pre- internet, parents or sister would photocopy hotel and transport info. Since internet. They would just email the info on.

we have a bank account that does this.. It's so much easier. we pay a monthly fee for the account, and we're covered as a family without even thinking about it.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 21/05/2024 15:40

sara and medschool ah ok fair enough. And actually thinking about I almost always set mine up immediately.

We delayed setting ours up this year however as DD was on a waiting list for a brace and because of that our insurer wouldn't even consider covering her. So I waited until the brace was fitted (all gone fine) and once it was a "known " thing they didn't even need to know.

So yes - as you were Grin

Well you may as well inform him of this fact seen as how you know.
