To think McDonald's isn't actually That bad...it's not cardboard and cows ears as people seem to think?

Looking at the ingredients in most of it, it's fine??

They use organic milk, free range eggs, burgers are meat and salt, probably better quality stuff than the likes of Harvester burgers etc.

People talk about it like you're feeding your kids arsenic, rats piss and pig shit...

My issue is the fact that the food doesn’t go bad when left out for weeks, even months, even the lettuce. Makes me wonder about the preservatives.

It tastes awful, it's expensive for what it is, and it's not even served quickly. They're getting it all wrong tbh

😂 just because you don’t approve does not mean they are ‘getting it all wrong’ for the millions of people who eat there regularly. They are absolutely meeting the desires of the consumer.

I worked with someone who had a happy meal in his desk that was several years old. It just went completely hard.

peakygold · 20/05/2024 10:20

I'll take a McDonalds over a bucket of chicken slime or plastic-smelling Subway any day.

Just because something isn't visibly mouldy doesn't mean it's not gone bad.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/05/2024 10:23

My only objections to McD’s are the smell as you walk past, people taking their hot smelly McD’s on the bus, and all too often leaving their greasy rubbish behind.

5128gap · 20/05/2024 10:25

I think the pragmatic approach to McDonalds is to accept that as a meal goes, it's pretty poor, because it relies heavily on foods that have little value other than tasting nice (in some peoples opinion at least) and staving off hunger; and is extremely light on foods that provide the nutrients our bodies need. However, to me, as long as its occasional and not regularly used to replace nutritious meals, then the impact is probably neutral rather than actually harmful. For one thing, the human body is pretty resilient and we are able to consume all sorts of things that aren't optimum (in moderation) without ill effect.

Yes and you could have eaten if I’m sure. But I think what she means is there is something fairly heavy duty preservative -wise if it hadn’t gone mouldy. I buy some preservative free bread and the mould starts kicking in from day 2.

Actually the food that really offends me is when someone brings a homemade tinned tuna sandwich on the train…

fieldsofbutterflies · 20/05/2024 10:31

@Calliopespa loads of food doesn't go mouldy if it's gone off, though. Crackers, honey, beans - are they all bad for you too?

Honey doesn’t go off because it’s naturally antibacterial and the bacteria that would make it go off cannot survive in it. Honey has been found in Egyptian tombs in an edible condition.

No but bread should. It’s the buns that are odd in their aging.

And actually crackers will go mouldy if they get damp. Normally they are too dry for mould.

fieldsofbutterflies · 20/05/2024 11:06

@Calliopespa well, yes I'm not saying it's not weird, just that the argument of "well, it doesn't go mouldy" doesn't really hold much water when loads of food doesn't go mouldy when it's off or bad.

The article linked above is interesting.

buolaoir · 20/05/2024 11:10

I don’t get it because I think it’s rubbish and overpriced for what it is (other than saver menu!). However I will take the kids there on occasion as they like it, and I don’t think it’s as bad for you as people make out.

Sorry. I shouldn’t have mentioned it then. I was unaware of the rigorous parameters for commenting.🙊😳

(Ps Out of interest, do you take tuna sandwiches out with you gettinglikemymother?)

soupfiend · 20/05/2024 12:02

I only take hand smoked kippers while travelling on public transport. None of your tinned nonsense for me.

That would be infinitely worse … 👃 🤣

Interesting, I expected a full blown massive salad and feeding a village on a chicken for a week brigade to come out clutching pearls because they are so much better than you for subsiding on one weetabix and a grape today (while burning through a packet of biscuits and a mug of tea with their aibu sesh), but it seems "we hate USA" is the flavour of the day, notwithstanding that most of them have Disneyworld popping out of every feed after all the googling.

Objectively, it is a calorie bomb with precious few micronutrients. OK if you just landed from a 12 hour flight at 2AM with a few jetlagged and starving kids in tow, but bad if you want to retain your long term pancreatic function on a regular basis.

Otherwise, to each their own, I guess...

NoWordForFluffy · 20/05/2024 13:13

Or if you just fancy one on occasion. 🙄

Exactly 😂

I love how these threads always attract people who insist McDonald's is only acceptable in dire emergencies 🙄

FluentRubyDog · 20/05/2024 13:27

To each their own, I suppose, but yeah, nothing but dire emergency would get me in there. Even then I think I'd prefer some fasting.

As I said, to each their own.

Teddleshon · 20/05/2024 13:36

Is it really any worse than say a Pret tuna baguette which is loaded with mayo and therefore empty calories?
