To think that red wine has changed

Red wine has started making me ill - I get a terrible headache which radiates from my jaw if I drink it (sad as I love red wine). It only takes a single glass for this to happen.

Weirdly, when I drink "old" red wine - the expensive stuff I don't get a headache. I was treated to a fancy dinner recently and the wine was 25+ years old, I drank half a bottle and no headache?

Based on my own anecdotal experience I draw the conclusion that something must have changed in wine production methods.

I get that sometimes, it's a horrid sharp.pain at the back of the jaw for me. I read that it is due to the sulphites that are sometimes used when making some wines, so I try and chose sulphite free wines, or remember the ones that hurt and avoid them.

OtterInDisgrace · 18/05/2024 04:01

You’re not being unreasonable. A lot of new world wine is extremely chemical. I love an older French red as they have fewer sulphites and allergens and don’t tend to give you those big banging headaches. Plus, I just don’t like the taste of that synthetic oaky wine characteristic of a lot of Ozzie or Californian wine.

Riverlee · 18/05/2024 05:25

That’s interesting. I don’t get the headaches etc but I’ve noticed that certain red wines taste stale to me, while previously I was fine with them.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 18/05/2024 05:29

YANBU

The reasons are sulphate and alcohol content. Both have gone up in the last twenty years, particularly in less expensive wines.

dazzlingdoll · 18/05/2024 06:54

Yes £10 red wines have gone down hill

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 18/05/2024 07:32

Can't drink red wine since I had my kids.

Have completely gone off sauvignon blanc too! Used to love it!

I much prefer old world wines these days.

decionsdecisions62 · 18/05/2024 07:44

It won't be the wine. Try changing production methods of French wine producers and see how far that gets you!

It may be the tannins affecting you more now you are ageing.

PickledPurplePickle · 18/05/2024 08:03

You can’t genetically say red wine has changed

it sounds like you have changed and become less tolerant to some of the ingredients that are in some red wines

I suspect it is tannins that are causing you issues and you will need to look closer at what exactly you are drinking

whiteroseredrose · 18/05/2024 08:13

I don't get pain but I'm finding a lot of red wine to be too 'strong' nowadays.

I think red wines are getting heavier which may be the problem.

MovingBird123 · 18/05/2024 08:19

It could be that you've changed. I developed, presumably, a sulphite sensitivity a few months ago - red, blotchy face and hay fever-like symptoms when I drink certain things. It's a bummer.

LuciferRising · 18/05/2024 08:22

I think wines in general have become far stronger. Any more than a glass, I'm hungover.

crackofdoom · 18/05/2024 08:25

Try organic wine.

Onand · 18/05/2024 08:25

It’s your body’s way of saying ‘please do not drink this stuff any more it’s really not good for me’.

Seriously, your liver will thank you for giving it up not to mention your complexion and general well being.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 18/05/2024 08:30

Maybe time to move onto Sanatogen?

I think 1989 was a good year.

CaravaggiosCat · 18/05/2024 11:10

My mum used to love red wine and blue cheese. She hit menopause and now they give her a migraine.

AgnesX · 18/05/2024 11:14

My sense of taste since I had COVID has changed. I can't drink cheap wines very much unless it's with food. I can't afford the very expensive stuff very often either 😔

That made me laugh out loud 😂 😂 😂

I have never been able to drink red wine. Always gave me horrible migraines. I'm guessing there is something in it that some people react to and it can change with age. I have got more and more sensitive to alcohol as I have got older, especially since having kids. I would feel dizzy and out of it if I drank an entire 500ml bottle of beer or cider, certainly not be fit to drive as some people do. It's weird because I used to love a good night out as a student.

ChiefEverythingOfficer · 18/05/2024 11:42

Lots of interesting thoughts. I live in Aus and made the decision to only drink local (save the environment and all of that a few years back. Before this my usual tipple (just once or twice a week) was a glass of French or Italian red.

It's sad isn't it, when the body has ideas at odds with our own. Sad indeed. Beer for me.

Yes £10 red wines have gone down hill

I guess that is due in part to inflation. A £10 bottle is the £4 bottle of 10 years ago!

CandiedPrincess · 20/05/2024 11:31

It's your age. Most people I know as they've aged have struggled with wine.

KimberleyClark · 20/05/2024 11:34

You can’t get many red wines less than 13% these days. The older ones seem to have less alcohol. Personally I hate having one glass and feeling like I’ve had half a bottle.

Most likely I have just stopped buying it because I can't justify paying £20 30 for a bottle
