To think the new official portrait of King Charles is awful

the background being the same colour as his uniform means just basically his face is visible it reminds me of the attic picture of Dorian Grey.

No one ever did an uncomplimentary one of the queen even as she got older

Can anyone explain the symbolism behind it? What is it supposed to convey?

Macbeff · 17/05/2024 21:34

I really like it, very different and striking.

The Guardian hated it - gave it one star.

domineastronomy · 17/05/2024 21:34

Love it!

I like the Freud portrait of the late Queen. She looks like a grandmother...

I bet she didn’t like it!

Rolf Harris,s portrait of her wasent all.that flattering.

OneFrenchEgg · 17/05/2024 21:38

The butterfly represents his change from Prince to king while it was being done. I don't know about the red, can't remember from what I watched. I love it.

Like a granny in a seriously bad mood.

I liked it too. I see him in a burning house, the danger all around and within - a representation of a ‘difficult’ monarchy. You often get one successful monarch, one less successful in history and I think it points to that heritage.

No, it wasn’t. Would have been better with her smiling with her mouth closed. A good likeness, though!

DramaAlpaca · 17/05/2024 21:47

I really like the butterfly symbolism, it's an interesting link to the symbolism used in medieval royal portraits.

I like that it's different and striking.

I just can't quite get my head around all the red...

Bazinga007 · 17/05/2024 21:50

It looks like he has been working in an abbotoir.

Binman · 17/05/2024 21:55

reflects the turmoil of his reign so far and the family going tits up the last few years, blood ,sweat, tears, pain

I think that's a tad OTT.

dottiedodah · 17/05/2024 22:10

I really like it .it's so different and really stands out. One after another almost photo type portraits become boring .this is cool and edgy

BlackEyesLikeADollsEyes · 17/05/2024 22:12

I genuinely quite like, there's something about all the red that blends the uniform into the background and just leaves the focus on the man, but

A) it does have the same vibe as that evil portrait in Ghostbusters 2 (?)

And

B) have you seen those versions of it mirrored that make it look like the devil as a goat head is in there? GrinConfused

I love it . The only part I'm not so keen on are the hands , I wish they were faded into the background aswell .
Overall though I think it's fabulous

GoodVibesHere · 17/05/2024 22:17

It looks like the artist ran out of paint colours...'Awww, I've only got red left, oh well I'd better use it up'.

Well he did want to be a tampon ….

LOL

Aswellisnotoneword · 17/05/2024 22:17

I like it as a piece of art, and think it's quite flattering to him. He's looking a lot more pasty and drawn in real life (which is understandable).

NewName24 · 17/05/2024 22:26

I prefer the memes going around the internet, after it was unveiled.

Isn't a butterfly paedo symbolism?

TTPD · 17/05/2024 22:33

Isn't a butterfly paedo symbolism?

No idea.

But I think in this it's that he became king during the process of having the portrait done, so like a caterpillar to butterfly, prince to king type symbol.

I quite like the portrait as a whole. I wouldn't have it on my wall or anything, but it's interesting and different.

HeddaGarbled · 17/05/2024 22:43

I do think the pinky-red background is slightly odd but I think his face is really well done. It’s him. I find it quite moving. And at the risk of sounding like your granny, doesn’t he look like his dad?
