To think the new official portrait of King Charles is awful

the background being the same colour as his uniform means just basically his face is visible it reminds me of the attic picture of Dorian Grey.

No one ever did an uncomplimentary one of the queen even as she got older

It’s going in Draper’s Hall eventually, it is going to stand out amongst their other royal portraits!

I like it. To me it suggests that all the trappings of kingship fade into the background and in the end you are just left with the man.

It’s an excellent painting, but him being lost in the fiery, glaring red feels painful.

It's like he's walked the hell.

Beatrixslobber · 17/05/2024 20:56

I really like it.

TammyJones · 17/05/2024 20:58

Walked 'through ' hell.

PussInBin20 · 17/05/2024 21:00

You’re not wrong. It’s hideous.

Zwicky · 17/05/2024 21:06

I really like it. There have been some poor portraits of the late Queen. The Rolf Harris one makes her look demented. The Lucian Freud one wasn’t conventionally flattering.

treatsortreating · 17/05/2024 21:10

I don't like it. The red is too overpowering - the King doesn't stand out at all. Looks like someone spilled too much red by accident and had to blend it the best they could

AngelasEyelash · 17/05/2024 21:11

I really like it. It's like King C is walking through a malestrom. Makes him look calm & dignified.

BeaRF75 · 17/05/2024 21:14

I love it, and it captures him really well.

That is what I thought, that it should match the realism of the other portraits.
I do like this portrait, but for other occassions.

Dakotabluebell · 17/05/2024 21:15

He looks like he's bathed in blood. Seems appropriate.

PrimalLass · 17/05/2024 21:17

I like it

sp1ders · 17/05/2024 21:19

It does look as though he's residing in Hell. I wonder if it's prompted him to say his prayers more fervently.

Seed90 · 17/05/2024 21:21

I really like it

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 17/05/2024 21:24

I think it's a very honest portrait except for the fact that they've chopped at least a decade (if not two) off his age.

He looks like a smug old lecher at home in hell, which is what he is and where he'll end up.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 17/05/2024 21:24

IWishThatYouWouldStay · 17/05/2024 20:49

It looks a bit like he's burning in hell.

That's what I thought! I'm not keen.

Possiblynotever · 17/05/2024 21:25

Lenin called, he wants his colour back

They did, actually, I think it was by Freud

I agree with you, though I have to say that there actually were a few portraits of the late Queen that were less than flattering. Some have been mentioned on here already.

SeeingRainbowsInTheGloom · 17/05/2024 21:27

I love it. Interesting how people have different tastes!

Crucible · 17/05/2024 21:27

I love it. The red and pink and orange and the single butterfly, I think would work without the King in the picture, just as an abstract piece.

Possiblynotever · 17/05/2024 21:27

I like the Freud portrait of the late Queen. She looks like a grandmother...

I didn't realise until he unveiled it that it was a serious portrait rather than a protest ... looks like blood

Well he did want to be a tampon ….

Laiste · 17/05/2024 21:30

Horrible.

Looks like he's in a meat grinder.
