A town in this country is living in third world conditions, with poisoned tap water!

Yet these people take hundreds of thousands of pounds in bonuses every year!

Brixham: Water firm apologises after parasite detected in reservoir - as cause of outbreak found

Residents in parts of Brixham, Boohay, Kingswear, Roseland and North West Paignton were told to boil their drinking water after 22 cases of cryptosporidiosis were confirmed in the Devon area.

While it is inconvenient, residents of Brixham can boil their water using a plentiful supply of gas or electricity. Or they can collect bottles of clean water.

They are not trekking for many kilometres across barren land looking for firewood or water, which is likely to be infected with diseases such as malaria. The women do this, mostly in groups to reduce the risk of rape.

I don't think we can sensibly compare that with Brixham.

This. Ridiculous comparison. And it’s for a week or so at most and then they can forget about it. Imagine drinking dirty water every day of your life?

Beautiful3 · 18/05/2024 08:58

I agree. It's awful. Feel sorry for everyone affected.

SerendipityJane · 18/05/2024 09:05

We need a charity single, a stadium concert, and a blitz of tv ads.

To think this should be front page news?
BitOutOfPractice · 18/05/2024 09:17

I honestly think that Labour should put renationalisation of the water industry in its manifesto. Not only because I think it would be the right thing to do, but also because it would be a massive vote winner.

Grandmasswagbag · 18/05/2024 09:25

I can’t believe people are minimising this actually. I’m guessing these people must be really poorly requiring medical treatment or how would anyone know about it if it were just a run of the mill vomiting bug? Whilst the terminology of ‘third world conditions’ might be out of date, having clean safe drinking water is a big signifier of a ‘developed’ nation and the U.K. falls short of this. Our entire water system is crumbling and I’d put money on the fact that this happens more often than is reported. When I’ve visited developing nations, at least I was aware that there was a chance the water could make you poorly. It’s outrageous that in the U.K. we believe we’re drinking safe clean water and it’s not. The rivers are full of actual shit. Bad V&D can be incredibly dangerous for some demographics. People may have had their lives threatened by this and all the while shareholders are pocketing millions from pillaging the U.Ks ‘assets’. It’s truly disgusting.

TemuSpecialBuy · 18/05/2024 09:28

There should be compulsory purchase by the government and it should be nationalised.

Its utterly disgraceful and the tip of the polluted poisonous and undrinkable iceberg

SerendipityJane · 18/05/2024 09:29

What wold you have us do ?

Also, it's probably not a bad idea to get rid of the idea of clean drinking water on tap at will. (Which is what the preppers have been saying for years).

If we want clear drinking water on tap, we need to earn it. And that takes investment, expertise, time and resources. We clearly have no interest in that sort of nonsense, and this is what happens. Too late now. This is the first of many consequences.

Behind Ukraine, Israel and Palestine etc.

This is people in our country living in third world conditions.

Unsure what paper you have where it isn't? It was lead story on radio news.

Will no one think of the shareholders ? Doesn't their right to clean money outweigh access to drinking water ? Which, lets face it, you can get from any old shop.

nonevernotever · 18/05/2024 09:35

I don't think it's coincidental that Scottish Water , which is still in public ownership, regularly tops surveys for customer service and for tap water quality.

buffyslayer · 18/05/2024 09:38

It's nothing new
Happened about 10 years ago in my area and we had to boil water for a month. Wasn't front page news then either but we are in the north so...

buffyslayer · 18/05/2024 09:39

Oh and there was no water distributed

South West Water have had 35 years to invest in the system, as have all the other Water companies.

Rather proving my point, really then.

We have no interest in these things - and haven't for the best part of 3 generations.

Still, national insurance eh ? A penny off. Just think of how much more the bosses will be getting now.

Clean water is so last century.

Pasithean · 18/05/2024 09:47

It’s terrible that this is happening . But there is no way you can compare it with third world standards and I find this more appalling than the problem.

buffyslayer · 18/05/2024 09:47

@SerendipityJane obviously not saying that. Just I keep seeing uproar online about it and when it happened to us with no end in sight it felt like it was barely mentioned
Think they gave us £60 compensation after a month

TeenLifeMum · 18/05/2024 12:07

It’s appalling, but it was on BBC breakfast yesterday so did get National news coverage.

liveoppositeacrazyhorse · 18/05/2024 13:01

I agree. We should be marching on Westminster because of the state of our water, rivers and seas. It makes my blood boil. The criminals in charge, both govt and water company bosses belong in jail.

Bushwhacked20 · 18/05/2024 13:05

I'm sure they'll get it sorted in time for all those MPs with second homes to holiday there safely in the summer...

Are you really surprised? This government has destroyed the UK one way and another.

NasiDagang · 18/05/2024 13:11

RichardMarxisinnocent · 17/05/2024 19:06

I don't think it's quite third world, my understanding is that if they boil the water it's drinkable? They can also collect bottled water (though perhaps not always enough) Third world would surely be no water out of the taps, and no bottled water avaliable.

Edited

Malaysia is considered a third world country and they do have parasites in water. I was born there and it's nothing to do about the lack of tap or bottled water.

KreedKafer · 18/05/2024 13:13

It’s been a top news story for days. The link you shared is, itself, from Sky News, one of the biggest news outlets in the country.

Why ? It's what we voted for.

Youdontknowmedoyou · 18/05/2024 14:27

Two pounds to water aid will provide clean and safe drinking water for the people of Brixham for a month....
