To eat a roast chicken that's been left out at room temperate

offthebeatentrack · 16/05/2024 10:34

Basically I cooked a whole roast chicken at 8pm and forgot to put it in the fridge before bed, so it's been left at room temperature until 6am when I woke up.
Hubby insists that it will be absolutely fine but I'm not so sure....

OP posts:
MatildaTheCat · 16/05/2024 10:37

I would.

Confortableorwhat · 16/05/2024 10:37

I'd eat it.

greenbeansrock · 16/05/2024 10:38

Let your husband eat it

i wouldn’t

and even if you do Op, every mouthful consumed you’ll be wondering…. so why bother?

Toddlerteaplease · 16/05/2024 10:39

I would

noctilucentcloud · 16/05/2024 10:39

I wouldn't because my house has been really warm overnight.

misszebra · 16/05/2024 10:40

unless you live in central Africa you are fine

Minniemooose · 16/05/2024 10:41

I wouldn’t take the risk. Food poisoning will be unpleasant and it’s not like it’s the middle of winter, it’s too warm to be left out all night.

After 2 hours left out it will be in the danger zone where bacteria can multiply.

You couldn’t pick a worse food to eat having been left out all night!

😱

If you imagine a turkey at Christmas, it might sit around on a table being picked at for several hours. So it's the same thing really. Put in the fridge and just pretend it was there all night. The fact it's a whole chicken means it's less likely to be dodgy than if it was mince, or small pieces of meat. Or if it was raw. Then I'd chuck away if left out overnight. A cooked chicken, that was covered? Should be fine.

dudsville · 16/05/2024 10:52

I wouldn't eat it as is but I would struggle with the waste. You could cook it on high heat in a stew as an alternative to eating it. I learned that from some tv show a while back and pocketed the info in the event I struggle to find good food during a zombie apocalypse.

ArmchairPhycologist · 16/05/2024 10:52

I would. But our kitchen isn't very warm.

So I guess my answer is actually a helpful 'it depends'.

Peonies12 · 16/05/2024 10:53

I definitely would, I always leave cooked food out to cool and forget about it. Never had food poisoning.

KrisAkabusi · 16/05/2024 10:54

I would. Without hesitation.

Keepingongoing · 16/05/2024 10:54

No, I wouldn’t. Sitting for 10 hours at room temperature? Absolutely no way, as it was chicken.

I had campylobacter and then a separate incident of unidentified food poisoning , both from chicken. Both extremely unpleasant and the effects were prolonged.

RabbitsRock · 16/05/2024 10:54

No way!

Reheating it doesn't kill all the potential pathogens so I definitely wouldn't do that.

OP depends how cold your house was.

longapple · 16/05/2024 10:56

I would!
If it was one of the cook in a bag ones or in a closed roaster I wouldn't worry about it, the oven will have killed anything that was in there when cooking it so nothing there to multiply.

If you're not happy then cook it in stir fries and stews and stuff.

TheKeatingFive · 16/05/2024 11:01

I absolutely would

HooleyB · 16/05/2024 11:01

Blimey. No.

Mnetcurious · 16/05/2024 11:02

Yes I would. I’m sure the people trained in food hygiene will be telling you no way but I have done this before and the chicken was eaten with no ill effects for anyone.

This.

I got campylobacter from chicken in a restaurant and I was ill for nearly a month. Had to have antibiotics in the end.

INeedVitaminSea · 16/05/2024 11:07

Roasting it will have killed any bacteria in the chicken.

If it was covered, no bacteria could get in it to reproduce - so temperature is irrelevant and it’s fine.

Even if it was uncovered, it’s unlikely any pathogenic bacteria that cause food poisoning would have just floated onto it - so probably fine.

Even if it was uncovered and pathogenic bacteria got onto it, twelve hours at room temperature isn’t long enough for them to have multiplied to a level they’ll make a normal person catastrophically ill - so probably fine.

I’d eat the chicken.

TheresMillionsSaidGeoffrey · 16/05/2024 11:09

You are. Chickens are amongst the most abused animals in the world. They are kept in cages, windowless barns at 20,000 per barn. Before being sent to a processing plant to be hung up by their legs, plunged in to electrified boiling hot water and having their throats slit.

I will go to my grave defending these poor creatures.

MidnightPatrol · 16/05/2024 11:09

I would

GasPanic · 16/05/2024 11:13

I'd eat it. How many people eat chicken sandwiches after they have been out of the fridge for hours ?
