Greece, Europe and tourism!

Jennybeans401 · 16/05/2024 06:40

Greece now joins most of Europe in anti-tourism protests aimed at the British.why? Surely tourism is tourism and why focus just on the Brits?

We are booked to go to Greece,I'm shocked.

I'm really not sure what you are trying to say. Your argument appears to be that because other countries serve it and , fish and chips is not British and pizza is not Italian?

Nowhere have I suggested that fish and chips are only served in the UK...

StarlightLady · 16/05/2024 19:56

I’m trying to say (l concede perhaps badly) that unlike as suggested up thread, you cannot prevent restaurants anywhere not offering menu items because they are not local.

AHH, gotcha. Completely agree with that.

MariaLuna · 17/05/2024 08:04

all inclusive resorts (often foreign owned) are on the increase as they are elsewhere. These provide little, if any benefit to the local economy.

Except they provide employment for the locals.... And much more than an AirBnB.

nokidshere · 17/05/2024 09:28

So you're saying private businesses should be told by the government not to serve the food their paying customers want to eat?

What? A pp said 'Brit tourists only want everything they have at home (ie roast dinners & full English breakfast) but with sun'. I just said that if Europe doesn't want Brit tourists then stop catering to them.

What's the government got to do with it? Actually don't tell me, I don't care enough.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/05/2024 09:34

@ClareBlue and they only do certain islands - usually where there are big hotels and banging nightlife- it's very easy to avoid in Greece - as it is Majorca etc

Alondra · 17/05/2024 10:05

Massive tourism is a global problem specially for countries like Spain, Italy, France and Greece with cheap flights from UK and other EU countries. As some of you have said, it's also a problem in popular parts of the UK like Cornwall or Devon.

The Spanish government is looking to make laws to stop AI to be offered all over Spain. There are also several autonomous regions like Catalunya, Canaries and the Balearic Islands very close to introduce laws to reign in Airbnb's and similar platforms. Whether we like it or not, it's going to happen.

As many posters have said, the popular campaigns in Spain against tourism are not targeting the British, they are targeting massive tourism as a protest to governments to do something about it.

Having said this, and I know some of you won't like what I'm about to say, British tourism has an awful reputation in Spain. We call it "el turismo de la borrachera" (drunk's tourism). Germans, Dutch and Scandinavians drink as much but are never as nasty and aggressive as the British when they are drunk It brings another dimension to the problem because of the amount of social problems caused and police interventions (which costs money to taxpayers).

BadPennyReturns · 17/05/2024 12:36

Absolutely! If you have a google you will find one hundred million cases of British drunks being so nasty, but never can you find one about the Germans, Dutch or Scandis who are so dignified on holiday and never cause issues.

quizzys · 17/05/2024 13:33

The "Full English Breakfast" in Spain is the go to for a hangover soakage. It's also a treat for many who would rarely have that at home. Must wear a footie shirt and have a range of tatoos to partake though.

That's a joke, but probably not far off the mark either.

Look, there are areas to be avoided at all costs in every holiday area if bad behaviour is not your bag. Research and google earth are your friends. Be selective, eat locally, support the indigenous businesses, be polite, appreciate your surroundings, and enjoy.

Must they be able to spell the word tattoo? Or are they all a bit too thick for that?

That's the type of British sneering that irks me. Pedants the lot of ya. Show me your tats then and recommend me a FE breakfast place that you like to frequent on the Costas!

Honestly no wonder British people lose the head everywhere. It must be the post Colonial exceptionalist mentality or something.

Anyway I will never forget how to spell ttttaaaattttoooos now thanks folks 😆

The French are engaged in a post colonial intervention right now, in a very small but resource rich island in the middle of the Pacific.

But the French, the Dutch and so on do not express their superiority and exceptionalism when on hols in Europe. Those colonial monsters!

No I suppose the French don’t insist on croissants for breakfast when on holiday but there does appear to be a friction point with indigenous people of New Caledonia and their right to self determination- not as important as the English breakfast being served abroad though!

There are plenty of obnoxious tourists of all nationalities. But on this forum, only the British, or rather the English, behave badly.

And the idea that the French of all people never feel superior to other nationalities, especially with regard to food, is ridiculous. I would say on average they are much more rigid about food than the British.

That's probably why few French go to the Costas!

And unfortunately many British let's face it can be the loudest, foulest, rude, noisy, picky, (European) visitors to the resorts in Europe. The sad thing is that it's only a minority who are like that, but their presence is felt and thus the reputation of all Brits is tarnished very unfairly. But that's the reality.

You never hear the positive side of things for example civilised Brits enjoying their coquilles St. Jacques with a glass of Chablis on Ile de Re. I'm sure you can guess why.

StarlightLady · 17/05/2024 18:46

In spite of the adverse comments about the British and tattoos on this thread, l would think that French women are the most tattooed people in Europe/UK.

But even the most civilised Brits swear when they tread on the coquilles St Jacques in the sea 😀.

*I probably shouldn't say this, but in light of all the anti-Scottish comments on MN, I will...

It's not "Brits" that give British tourists a bad name. It's English.

It's the lager louts draped in their St George's Cross flags.

As a travelling Scot, stumbling through the native language when abroad, and asked "are you English?", upon replying "Scottish" it is always met with a laugh or a cheer and a derisive comment about the English.

As I say, saying this against my better judgement, as I know many won't like it, but there you have it.

However, I do think this particular issue is more an airbnb / affordable housing issue and I do see their point.*

Yeah because there’s no Scottish yobs abroad - ever. FFS so predictable this dig at “the English.” I’ll just leave this here for starters. This occurred in Wales.

Drunken Scots yobs 'ran riot' and battered Good Samaritan in boozy rampage

The incident in Wales, saw one of the men repeatedly tell a female officer to “f*** off” before he and his pal ran away.
