Event cost would you pay this

Family member has set a new business and a charity. So he offers services as a person and also offer similar as part of the charity. They are get to get funding so wants to an event to raise money. Asked if I was interested said yes. He has a tendency to over price himself. New business is similar to the Tony Robbins MLM scheme

The event is a bootcamp style couples of hours, some food, group motivation session and mediation plus a stretch. How much would you think this day would cost?

He wants to charge £164 per person

YNBU - it’s to high
YABU- that is the going cost

That rate sounds fine to me, but it isn’t something I’d ever spend my money on because it’s not my thing.

YouveGotAFastCar · 15/05/2024 11:30

It's going to completely depend on his profile and experience.

Tony Robbins charges from £450, right the way up to a couple of thousand when you add on various VIP options. He's a controversial figure but the people who love him, love him, and are willing to pay to be coached by him and join that that type of experience.

If this is a brand new venture and he doesn't have much of a reputation, it'll be a much tougher sell.

Mumsnet won't be able to help with pricing strategy here, because you've got no way of knowing if each respondent is in your target market, and we've got no way of knowing how much credibility your friend has.

Some people here pride themselves on yellow-sticker shopping and making a chicken last a week; others have cooked meals delivered every day for a couple of hundred... There's no "normal".

ISeeTheLight · 15/05/2024 11:31

In London you can get away with that cost. Everywhere else, not so much I think.
Also not something I'd ever sign up to but there are plenty of people who pay "lifestyle coaches" etc so there might be demand.

LauderSyme · 15/05/2024 11:31

I would expect to spend that for a half day but not a couple of hours. £80 ish would be more reasonable.

sbadfnb · 15/05/2024 11:34

I think £164 for 5 hours I would expect £60 for two hours

Rookieuser123 · 15/05/2024 11:37

It’s not Tony Robbins but similar thing just not well known and debate around the scientific backing it has.

Currently family member has done nothing like this himself. He has worked some events for a low level influencer. So currently has no credibility. Goes on lives every week to about 10 viewers on Instagram.

Event is the north, low income area

Ive agree to go but non of my friends will go which seems to have annoyed him as he deems them well off.

I’ve never heard of Tony Robbins but there are people in my area (south east) that do that sort of thing for £20-30.

I went to an event like this recently on the South Coast women only it was £40 a ticket.

CommentNow · 15/05/2024 11:47

Luxury brand with shit values charge more for less.

Stuff is worth what people will pay.

Just say its out of your price range for that sort of experience. If enough people refuse he may rethink or he may target another audience.

LetsGoRoundTheRoundabout · 15/05/2024 11:47

I’ve seen similar-ish group events for around £40-60.

Hinkuy · 15/05/2024 11:48

To be honest you sound a bit enabling. He needs to be told its too expensive and to get a proper job maybe.

SpringerFall · 15/05/2024 11:49

Price sounds fine for me but not for me the event

People spend 2000 on a handbag so people will either pay or not

sbadfnb · 15/05/2024 11:53

I would go to an event like this. But group size should be a consideration too.

Starlight1979 · 15/05/2024 11:55

"plus a stretch"

This made me laugh more than it should have 😂Is there an additional charge for stretching??

Sorry it sounds ridiculously overpriced tbh... Especially as he isn't even well established enough to justify asking those prices. I would say £50 max.

And you say it's a low income area too?? Absolutely no chance.

Rookieuser123 · 15/05/2024 12:04

@Starlight1979

He did want to label it yoga but the person doing it isn’t qualified so did point of he’s void his own insurance if they did that.

I’ve pointed out the price is so high but we end up in a heated conversation that if I’m honest I don’t care to get into. Whilst yes I can afford hence not backing out I pointed out others don’t see the Value and would pay £50 each and provide testimonials but their Tony Robbins style MLM owner charges £250 a hour for a session so that’s what they feel they are worth more.

I just don’t know what the market rate is for this. They also want to offer retreats abroad at 4K a pop which I’ve pointed out is expensive.

Personally they are accountable to pay their bills and lifestyle how they choose to do it is on them. They also don’t like any judgement so there’s no point wasting my breath.

Unless it's a known person I think you'll struggle to get more than £30/40. They had a similar event here a couple of weeks ago and it was £25 a head and the speaker was "as seen on tictoc"

DinnaeFashYersel · 15/05/2024 12:22

Is this a legit and registered charity?

Is he making it clear how much money is going to the cover v on spend?

These are other factors that will help decide whether people are willing to spend that amount.

Rookieuser123 · 15/05/2024 12:29

@DinnaeFashYersel

Hes put it out as all proceeds go to over an activity that needs kit to pay for to offer that out to people. But thinking about it not sure what costs he has but he will have them that need to be considered.

they are a CIC which I thought was a charity buy googled it and they aren’t

YouveGotAFastCar · 15/05/2024 12:33

This sounds more and more dubious the more you post.

I wouldn't be going - that'll look like endorsement - and I wouldn't be touting it to my friends, either. If he's got 10 viewers on Instagram, on average, he's a long way from being able to charge that much.

FrontEnd · 15/05/2024 12:36

Excuse my bluntness but people pay TR for reputation. If family member doesn't have a track record, best he can hope imo is for payment for hosting a networking- type event, until he has managed to build a relevant reputation. I am having flashbacks to an episode of The Office where Ricky Gervais bounces in as a "motivational speaker" with a reverse baseball cap and ghetto blaster pumping out Simply The Best tbh. I can detect legitimate frustration in your post and would steer well clear at risk of being connected to this. Good luck!

KrisAkabusi · 15/05/2024 12:36

I don't see how something can be both a charity and multi level marketing. One is tightly regulated and one is a con.

Spirallingdownwards · 15/05/2024 12:37

It was dubious as soon as you mentioned alleged "charity".

If you want to go to support him then go but please don't tout it to your friends otherwise you may find they aren't friends for much longer.

He can work out the cost to him and what he needs to make as a profit to be viable if he is a genuine business.

He needs to read this.

It's really imprtortant that he is up front and transparent about what proportion goes to the charity and what goes on costs. Just saying 'proceeds' isn't good enough.

It needs to be accurate and clear what proportion of the £165 will be spent on cost and what will go to the cause.

Hoppinggreen · 15/05/2024 12:54

I doubt its the cost putting people off

SlothsNeverGetIll · 15/05/2024 12:55

I pay £15 for an hour long yoga class.
So double it, add on some extra fripperies, plus food. I'd pay £60.
