Family member has set a new business and a charity. So he offers services as a person and also offer similar as part of the charity. They are get to get funding so wants to an event to raise money. Asked if I was interested said yes. He has a tendency to over price himself. New business is similar to the Tony Robbins MLM scheme

The event is a bootcamp style couples of hours, some food, group motivation session and mediation plus a stretch. How much would you think this day would cost?

He wants to charge £164 per person

YNBU - it’s to high
YABU- that is the going cost

A couple of hours isn't the same as a day. I wouldn't pay £165 for a couple of hours or waffle and some yoga from an unqualified instructor. Who would?!

Rookieuser123 · 15/05/2024 14:08

I think the plan is a drag out across a day but the only element that has a qualified person would be the bootcamp that would be a couple of hours.

I will send over the regs on fundraising!

I’ll make them aware they have to explain where they need to say the money of going, is that in advertising? Or someone online.

I don't see how something can be both a charity and multi level marketing. One is tightly regulated and one is a con.

Don’t want to say what it is as it’s outing. They offer MLM as a business service, similar style to the Tony Robbins one but that service they charge for they’d do as a service for a charity well CIC

Depends entirely on his reputation and intended clientele. Some would pay that, some wouldn't.

nocoolnamesleft · 15/05/2024 14:14

I might pay that to avoid it.

UnbelievableLie · 15/05/2024 14:18

Why do they think they can charge this sort of money with no qualifications or reputation or even client base?

Doesn't sound like a business at all - just a dodgy MLM.

Because as part of the MLM he’s been told he’s worth £250 a hour so every thing he proposing is way out of proportion.

He also wants to offer coaching which he wants to charge 2k for 8 weeks 1 hour a week.

I wouldn't pay that much for such a small experience.

Slightly more expensive at £395 per person but looks like a brilliant experience event are the ones run by Trails and Vines (I'm sure there are plenty of others around the country...this one popped up when I was searching for trail running locations).

Admittedly double the price of what your family member is proposing, but includes copious amount of food, wine, accommodation for 2 nights and more than one professionally led activity experience.

For £160 per person I'd expect a lot more than just a not-yoga experience, a few nibbles and an in person TED type talk. Just doesn't sound like a good idea to be honest at that price.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 15/05/2024 14:28

He may want to charge 2K for coaching but I doubt anyone will pay that for someone with no reputation, experience or proven track record.

He needs to stop listening to what the MLM bullshit merchants are telling him what he can earn and work out what hes going to actually earn (it will be vastly different).

Or better still leave the MLM

And no I wouldn't pay 160 for a couple of hours.

TommyWooWoo · 15/05/2024 14:36

He sounds like he has no business sense whatsoever. He's setting up an event without having done any research in to what price people are willing to pay, and is basing it purely on what some MLM have told him 'he's worth'. It will quite clearly fail. He can 'want to charge 2k' for something as much as he likes - meaningless if nobody wants to pay it...

KrisAkabusi · 15/05/2024 14:38

It's now becoming clear that your family member is just the latest in a line of people that have fallen for an MLM scam. There is no way that an untrained, unqualified person with no name or brand recognition can charge £2k for 8 nebulous 'coaching' sessions People will not pay that. He's already dragging family (you) into supporting this as the public won't. He will also potentially get into a lot of bother trying to mix a charity aspect with this. You need to stay miles away from this. It's a con, he's been conned, he's trying to con other people onto paying a lot of money for a poor service.

D20 · 15/05/2024 14:38

This is giving me vibes of the tattle threads on MLM coaches. It was eye opening for me and I only arrived there in a roundabout way. Anyways he should probably start off with a free taster session and then get any gullible people signed up for his £2k coaching sessions. One managed to worm their way into the bodyshop online so definitely get him to pair up with another MLM and bleed those suckers dry 🙄

Ooh, that sounds fabulous! I'm only just getting back in to running, so couldn't cope with the long run just yet, but I'm going to keep a note of this for when I can!

mindutopia · 15/05/2024 14:42

What is he charging now for services he is already successfully providing? I think it's a big leap to go from 10 followers on a live to executive coaching at £2K for 8 sessions, or whole day events for £164.

Does he currently do individual or group sessions? How much are people paying? How much demand is there for a full day session? Is he booked up on all his individuals sessions? Can't clear his diary fast enough for people to book him? That's when I'd look to move into full day events. If this is just a pipe dream and he has no clients yet, then he's biting off more than he can chew.

That said, I don't know that I'd be taking executive type coaching from a guy with a limited social media following who doesn't even seem to have a business plan. The whole point is, you have to be successful in the thing you are teaching others how to do.

mindutopia · 15/05/2024 14:53

Also, to give you an idea. I'm attending a similar sort of weekend this weekend. It's not an MLM or coaching, but more of a retreat for people with a similar background. There are talks, yoga, meditation, sound baths, cold water swimming, reiki, team building activities, art classes from Friday-Sunday, so like 48 hours basically. Accommodation is provided, but it's self-catering (we are cooking our own meals individually or collectively) and it's £175 for the weekend.

DrJonesIpresume · 15/05/2024 15:03

Would I pay that? Not a cat in hell's chance.

parkrunpal · 15/05/2024 15:21

Been invited to a similar thing locally in July (also in North) ... £35 for the full day

Rookieuser123 · 15/05/2024 16:33

Currently charging between £50 - £120 for these sessions he offers. Doesn’t have any regular clients a few one offs and then this women that commits to every 2 weeks a for a few months and then stops.

Does 2 days in setting with kids but paid £120 per day, not qualified again but the governing body seems happy to have a bum on seats

You need to stop the comparison with Tony Robbins. He has over 7 million social media followers your relative has very few.

The MLM are telling him what he is worth for their profits, not his and will be bullshitting.

He will make no money out of this and the majority of people
Would not pay that amount of money.

Not comparing him to Tony Robbins but the MLM that he runs so someone in doing his coaching packages as it’s a similar thing to what he is offering.

I’ve explained this to him and he said it’s the going rate which I was trying to clarify

Op the ‘10 people on Instagram’ jibe isn’t great. I’m an author and we all started somewhere and today life for creators and influencers and people who deliver content is all about trying to recruit new fans but it’s hard until things click in, word spreads etc etc. if it’s not your thing it’s not your thing and if the price is too high compared to other things out there then that needs to be changed but everyone has to start somewhere

NeedToChangeName · 15/05/2024 18:44

If something's too cheap, it's often regarded as "low quality" rather than "a bargain"

He'll find out for himself if his price is too high

TheAceWoman · 15/05/2024 18:57

I don't understand why people wouldn't just go to the gym for the day, use the gym, go to a class, have a swim, a sauna and a spa and go somewhere nice to eat at lunchtime. £164 for what is essentially nothing is way too much imo.

PonyPatter44 · 15/05/2024 19:06

It's total nonsense, but I suspect that you only way your relative will get that is when he advertises his "coaching " and only two people sign up. Anyone who gets suckd into a MLM is going to be rinsed, basically, they're all con jobs.
