Floatation Tanks

Has anyone tried using one. what was it like?

I'm quite tempted to try it - according to the website it's great to help improve your sleep, relieve stress, and good for your mental health.

AIBU to give it a try, or is it all guff?
Interested to hear the experience of someone who's tried it or uses them regularly

I love them. I had a couple in each pregnancy as a treat & a couple of times since. Id have them more often if finances / time & geography allowed!
Super relaxing - just make sure you cover any scratches / cuts with vaseline provided as it's salty water so will sting if you don't.

JMSA · 15/05/2024 03:07

How deep are they please, as really deep water gives me the creeps?
I'm guessing not very, as they're salty. But the word 'tank' conjures up a horrible vision!

Newnamewhodiss · 15/05/2024 03:25

My DH uses them and loves them. He says it’s not very deep and if you push your bum down you would touch the floor. They give me
the creeps so I’ve asked many questions about it! He definitely returns more chilled and sleeps better though afterwards.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 15/05/2024 05:17

The ones I use are massive - they’re about the size of a double bed. It’s enclosed - you open a door to step in and, like the PP said, the lovely warm water is not very deep. There are starlights in the ceiling, which you can turn off and they can play music/relaxation/mediation tracks. I often fell asleep!

TrivialSoul · 15/05/2024 06:03

I love them. I have severe anxiety and find they help me so much. I can feel the positive effects for up to a week. I haven't been for a while because money has been a bit tight and also I have brightly coloured hair which would strip out in the salty water!

SummerBreeeze · 15/05/2024 08:05

Can I ask a stupid question? Does the water go in your ear? I have sensitive ears/sinuses from repeated infections so always have to be careful

You get given earplugs. And a float neck pillow if you want it. Mine has underwater lights and a choice of noise like white noise that plays under the water. It is quite surreal and makes it easy to meditate or get into a really deep (not the water!) relaxation.

WhataPithy · 15/05/2024 08:23

I tried a floation tank few years ago. I had wanted to try one for years but I didn’t realise how claustrophobic I’d feel. I hated the water going into my ears and found it very hard to let go and relax, don’t remember being offered earplugs nor neck pillow.

skyfairy · 15/05/2024 08:27

It was horrible, not at all relaxing, felt claustrophobic and seedy, and the salt really stung my ladyparts. Maybe that was a dud one.

AFmammaG · 15/05/2024 08:30

I think it’s a love it or hate it thing. Yes the salt will sting you if you have any sort of cut or have shaved anywhere recently.
I enjoyed it, I actually fell asleep! But my friend did one where it was so busy they constantly bumped into each other, which in the dark wasn’t much fun. She said they were all incredibly polite and kept apologising every time someone’s foot bumped into someone’s face. So I guess you need to read the reviews for the place.

dudsville · 15/05/2024 08:30

I tried it once I couldn't stop marvelling at how odd it was. It was fine, but neither here nor there for me. I felt like I'd gone to sit in a stranger's bathtub for a bit.

dudsville · 15/05/2024 08:31

Mine was an individual pod, would ave been so much weirder sharing a large pool with strangers!

AmiShitsaline · 15/05/2024 08:32

I have done dry flotation several times and I love it. You are wrapped up like a cocoon, it’s really nice and relaxing.

Sounds horrible. I thought most places were individual tanks. I wouldn't go to a shared one

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 15/05/2024 08:34

Ooh reading with interest as am going for the first time next week - individual tank (group tanks sounds weird!)

0sm0nthus · 15/05/2024 08:38

I've always been interested in these but never had a chance to try it!

Tdcp · 15/05/2024 09:06

How claustrophobic is it? I'm quite bad but I do fancy it, I'm not sure if because it's dark it won't be as bad as if it was light?

If you go into an individual one, you don’t have to close the lid fully.

SummerBreeeze · 15/05/2024 09:16

I'm totally fascinated now. I'm also claustrophobic but looked up the ones nearest me and they say they have a mechanical lid that you don't close all the way (individual pods) - I would need to take ear plugs as having water in my ears wouldn't feel very relaxing!

I am slightly horrified by the giant pool with bodies floating into each other 😂

You might prefer the dry floatation, you are wrapped up so not actually in the water and there is no lid

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 15/05/2024 10:09

OP, were you listening to Greg Davies on Desert Island Discs?

Digitaldedado · 15/05/2024 12:45

The ones DH and I have done don't have a lid, just a private room which you can light how you please. DH and I were in the same pool together, but once you get used to it you just gentle move each other away if you bump. The weirdest thing is the salt drying on your skin if they are out of the water, like your boobs!
The first one was hard to switch off my busy mind but they get better and the sleep after is amazing!

bryceQ · 15/05/2024 21:03

Ive done the tanks twice. I love meditation and relaxation things but this wasn't for me. The salt stung my nether regions, the second time I put vaseline on. I found the darkness very hard so second time had the light on. I floated around and got disoriented and couldnt open the lid and it was horrible. Also by the end I got really chilly. Not for me! I much prefer a sound bath or restorative yoga class.

AFmammaG · 15/05/2024 21:53

I didn’t know you could get individual ones 😆 I’ve only ever done it in a group environment which for me was fine but way too busy for my friend!

bryceQ · 15/05/2024 21:54

You're naked in the single tanks!
