to find Nespresso's new recycling process infuriating?

It used to be that you'd bag the spent capsules up, and they would collect, or you could return them to the store.
My local store has now closed, and the collection system is really difficult to master - I haven't managed it yet.
So, they can paint themselves as environmentally-friendly, but do bugger all.

Plus, they make it difficult/impossible to complain, apart from talking to a robot.

I know this is a 1st world problem, but I felt the need to vent.

Maybe switch to L'Or capsules? Their recycling programme is user friendly.

Bjorkdidit · 14/05/2024 10:02

Are there any drop off points near to you on Terracycle?

I run a drop off point for another type of capsule. People leave them near the bins in my garden, I box them up and arrange for them to be collected by UPS (Terracycle pay) and I get points which are converted into a donation to a sports club I am involved in.

judgementfail · 14/05/2024 10:08

I'm not sure what you are finding difficult. You can get them to collect from the doorstep or drop off at a Royal Mail location near you.

judgementfail · 14/05/2024 10:10

www.nespresso.com/uk/en/sustainability/recycling

All the instructions are on there. I don't see how they can make it easier.

Misthios · 14/05/2024 10:10

You need one of these, they're brilliant

https://www.dualit.com/products/ecopress-aluminium-capsule-recycler

it separates the metal from the coffee inside, then you rinse the metal bit and put it in the standard metal recycling bin, the used coffee in the food waste or on the garden.

If you were used to taking them to the store can't you just take them to a podback collection point instead? There are a lot of corner shops etc that offer this service.

OSU · 14/05/2024 10:18

Same as you OP. Given the aluminium is recyclable easily enough, I get the pods after use and gouge out the coffee with a teaspoon (vertuo) and put the coffee in the compost heap and the pod in the recycling bin at home.

Brilliant, just ordered one, thanks for the tip 😍

pambeesleyhalpert · 14/05/2024 10:22

I thought they went back to the old way?

Bunnycat101 · 14/05/2024 10:22

I found the old system much better. More recently I’ve found the new process much more fussy. It needs to be easy to make people make the right choices re recycling.

pambeesleyhalpert · 14/05/2024 10:23

Are you in Bristol? Our local store just suddenly closed!

Kosenrufugirl · 14/05/2024 10:26

Why wouldn't you buy DeLonghi coffee machine? We had one for years, makes wonderful coffee. Even a small amount of plastic is harmful to the environment. And yes, 1st world does most of pollution while poor countries suffer most from the environment damage (where either recycling or more commonly dumping) takes place

rwa818 · 14/05/2024 10:29

Another vote for the eco press, brilliant!

Also I'm considering switching to compostable pods which would be even less hassle, they can go in out food waste which is collected with normal kerbside recycling (depending on your area though, I know not all councils do this)

eurochick · 14/05/2024 10:30

The costumes are metal not plastic.

OP I agree. It has gone from ticking a box when ordering to say you have a collection to having to fill out an entire Royal Mail form. In my view they have made it deliberately harder and it is annoying.

I've got one of these too, and I use the grounds as slug-repellent in the garden (I don’t use branded Nespresso capsules, though, I buy the very good ones from Wonky Coffee - massively cheaper and you can set up a regular order for whatever frequency you like)

?? No plastic in Nespresso pods. They are all aluminium.

Misthios · 14/05/2024 10:34

You dont have to use the Dualit press thing exclusively for Nespresso branded pods, we use all sorts of different brands and they all work as long as they're the aluminium ones

Yes!

See, this is why I love MN. The eco press is on order

ivycicero · 14/05/2024 11:46

We changed over last year from Neapresso to a bean to cup machine. Now the coffee grounds go on the garden or into the compost or food waste, it's so much easier.

Sausagenbacon · 14/05/2024 11:51

Well, I didn't want to change machine, as it cost too much to do that, and I really like the capsules I use (napoli)
So very glad to have my problem solved

@Misthios do you know if this works with any type of capsule? I have a vertuo one. Looks quite good. If it works I'll get one as well. What a fab idea.

We have one too and the Vertuo pods wouldn’t fit - there is a little hole that the pod sits over.

It is excellent - I bought ours after reading about it on here a while ago.

CiderJabs · 14/05/2024 12:04

@QueenOfWeeds so it doesn't work with vertuo pods ?

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/05/2024 12:05

The only difference for me is dropping the recycling bag at the post office rather than the yodel drop off. I am tempted by the squeezing out the coffee gadget though. In particular I might implement it on holiday as at the moment I bring home the pods from our holiday home. The compostable pods worked well btw but my family members prefer the nespresso taste I was happy with them.
