to find Nespresso's new recycling process infuriating?

It used to be that you'd bag the spent capsules up, and they would collect, or you could return them to the store.
My local store has now closed, and the collection system is really difficult to master - I haven't managed it yet.
So, they can paint themselves as environmentally-friendly, but do bugger all.

Plus, they make it difficult/impossible to complain, apart from talking to a robot.

I know this is a 1st world problem, but I felt the need to vent.

I've found the Royal Mail pick up useless too. I resorted to putting the pods in the bin but reading this, I have got so many alternatives. Many thanks for posting

Peonies12 · 14/05/2024 12:17

Just buy compostable pods which are compatible? Much better than recycling. And cheaper usually than the branded ones, Waitrose ones are good

I abandoned my subscription with nespresso when they changed their recycling
collections.

I was really annoyed with them, because those pods are environmentally ridiculous and the only thing that made them halfway justifiable was a workable recycling scheme.

Still, I'm a lot richer now, and less highly caffeinated.

Misthios · 14/05/2024 12:48

AFAIK it will only use pods which are compatible with a nespresso machine - any brand, as long as they are compatible. Fine with Starbucks, Lavazza, Costa, foreign brands as well as the cheapie Aldi/Lidl ones and Nespresso branded.

We don't compost here, we have food waste collected and the compostable ones do not count as food waste.

Ilovemyshed · 14/05/2024 12:50

Pod coffee, just another pain to add more landfill.

Use a cafetiere or a bean to cup machine.

Misthios · 14/05/2024 13:06

Well no, because the metal goes to be recycled and the coffee goes on the garden. The cardboard sleeve is recycled too.

Now you could argue about the energy used to produce the pods in the first place, but the actual pods don't have to end up in landfill and don't in this house.

You need one of these, they're brilliant

https://www.dualit.com/products/ecopress-aluminium-capsule-recycler

it separates the metal from the coffee inside, then you rinse the metal bit and put it in the standard metal recycling bin, the used coffee in the food waste or on the garden.

I was going to post this!

Why wouldn't you buy DeLonghi coffee machine? We had one for years, makes wonderful coffee. Even a small amount of plastic is harmful to the environment. And yes, 1st world does most of pollution while poor countries suffer most from the environment damage (where either recycling or more commonly dumping) takes place

Edited

Yes, we put whole coffee grains of our choice in the machine container, choose the grind grade, water in container and press on small x 1, or small x 2, or large x 1 or 2, or a mix of both. When the coffee grounds container is full, we chuck it in the garden or compost. NO waste at all. And we've had our DeLongi machine for about 12 years.

I could do with one of these but I buy L’Or XL capsules, they’re bigger than the normal Nespresso ones, do you think they would work with it?

Do they fit in a standard Nespresso machine? If so, probably yes

SpringBunnies · 14/05/2024 14:32

I'm not sure what you find difficult either. I can drop off at any post office. You don't even need a printer.

SinnerBoy · 14/05/2024 14:40

I'm not keen on Nespresso and just use a cafetiere. I was glad to see that they'd done something about the waste, as they had one at a place I worked at a few years ago. It filled an 80 litre bin every week!

jaundicedoutlook · 14/05/2024 14:51

I'd recommend the Grind Nespresso-compatible pods. They taste significantly better than the Nespresso pods and they are compostable as well.

Misthios · 14/05/2024 14:52

Hadn't seen the Hotel Chocolat one but appears to do the same job of separating the metal from the coffee.

We used to fill the bags for Nespresso but it was a faff and the local drop off shop closed, and as they weren't giving an incentive for returning the pods to them, we just decided to start recycling with the rest of the stuff which goes out each week.

That wee dualit gadget is a game changer, glad to see people recommending it. I do wonder if there's something weird going on with nespresso, our store closed and opened as a concession in John Lewis instead. I wonder if the David Beckham adverts took a lot of budget??

bluecomputerscreen · 14/05/2024 14:58

my parents buy dupes in paper capsules that can go on the compost heap or in the composting/green bin.

bluecomputerscreen · 14/05/2024 15:01

apparently pods are environmentally quite good as there is very little food waste due to the coffee being very measured.

I think from our experience - well DP's experience really as he is the biggest drinker of the pods - is that Nespresso is very expensive. He finds the Starbucks pods just as nice if not better, there are also loads of companies like Wonky Coffee, or Kaffekapslen which offer very good prices. So although they have cornered the market on the machines, not so much on the pods.

Also, you don't have to go to a Nespresso shop to get the machine, you can get them anywhere.

Actually i have the Hotel Chocolat one. Boight it with my birthday vouchee you get every year for signing up to HC vip

Pusspot · 14/05/2024 15:21

My Morrisons store has a recycling bin for coffee pods.

judgementfail · 14/05/2024 15:38

As anticipated on any Nespresso thread the 'Eugh it's so bad for the environment' claims pop up.
Aluminium is infinitely recyclable. I worked out that the amount of aluminium used in a months worth of Nespresso for two added up to about the equivalent of 3 aluminium cans.
Hardly the environmental crime of the century.
