To hate the vacuousness of some young girls nowadays?

I find it so sad. 12 year olds obsessed by beauty brands, TikTok, doing their hair for school, fake tan, ridiculously short school skirts, it all seems so sad. And they are clones. Room in their heads only for brands

i know this is not all of them.

high end beauty counters were not full of pre teens

It’s so different now. These aren’t trends, they are must haves

12 year olds in body con outfits and full nightclub makeup as seen on the media

It was the same back ‘then’ too! Then for me being late 80’s early 90s, but I think we’ve had representation back to the 50s in this thread.

Now I’m starting to think you were that girl that looked and dressed like was a 40 yo mum at 14.

Seriously what did the girls at your school wear?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 13/05/2024 22:10

Follow 90s goop on insta. They post photos of articles from 90s magazines. They were all obsessed with makeovers for 11-13 year olds and looking good for lush lads at the disco - beauty obsession is nothing new! At least there are more diverse roll models now

Did you inject your lips, get Botox, spend the equivalent of £200 on a coat which you begged your mum for because everyone else had one?

SundaysAndMondays · 13/05/2024 22:11

And they are clones.

How lovely, dehumanising young girls😖

Room in their heads only for brands

Sneery and rude.

Shame, a discussion about the pitfalls of social media marketing and addictive smart phone could have been interesting but you are just being rude about young girls and women.

AuraBora · 13/05/2024 22:11

FaeryRing · 13/05/2024 22:01

It’s part of a bigger culture where teen life is sheer materialism and being cooped up on screens.

This nails it for me.
My daughter is not yet 7 but I seriously hope she doesn't get sucked into it all (if that's actually possible).
I don't agree that the OP is sneering or belittling young girls of today, I think perhaps the wording could have been better but I absolutely agree with her sentiment.

ghostyslovesheets · 13/05/2024 22:11

boredinmy30s · 13/05/2024 22:05

@FaeryRing @ghostyslovesheets

the consumerism is starting earlier and earlier. Does a 10 year old need a £45 cup...

No they don;t but as a parent you don's BUY it - you buy the £4.99 dupe and explain that paying that much for a cup is stupid!

I can remember badgering my mum repeatedly for a horse - I worked for free at a yard to get free rides, I converted our shed to a stable which I mucked out every day and I begged and Begged every birthday and Christmas - my mum just said 'Ghosty, we can't keep a horse in a 3 bed terrace so no' because that's parenting

I will own the wording, blame it on frustration

Stop blaming young girls for the problems of consumerism and social media.

Screamingabdabz · 13/05/2024 20:51

Lots of grown adult men are endlessly obsessed with kicky ball and their dicks. But let’s pick on 12 year old girls eh?

It’s possible to think about more than 1 topic at a time 🙄

SundaysAndMondays · 13/05/2024 22:13

FaeryRing · 13/05/2024 22:08

Of course they bloody don’t.

All very well making yourself look like a five star feminist and cooool mannnnn by calling OP a misogynist and out of touch, but in 20 years when these girls are crippled with anxiety they are now and wondering why the fuck we didn’t empower them to rein in the impossible beauty standards that have resulted in the horrors of lip filler, Botox and experimental ‘vitamin injections’ etc what will we say then?

It’s nothing like wearing bloody blue eye shadow in the 80s, stop the faux naivety

The op isn't empowering girls.

ConfusedKoala13 · 13/05/2024 22:14

CarryOnCharon · 13/05/2024 20:54

No. I was very into make up in the 80s. But it was about fun and experimenting, not brands and confirming

But it was - it was just Impulse & Body Shop instead of Sol de Janeiro and Byoma. And it's bubble tea and iced coffee rather than diamond white & 20:20. Naf naf & Kappa not North face & Nike
They're just gonna need better Saturday jobs 🤣
My 13 yo probably wouldn't see the joy in leafing through every poster in Athena every week but would watch YouTube shorts endlessly - teenagers are similar just the details that change

Umm Botox wasn’t a thing but yeah I’ve already said I did spend that on clothes…

Coach purse @ 16 along with acrylic nails. Also got my perms (why yes I’m dating myself) cuts and color done at the original Aveda salons.

OnlyOneAdda · 13/05/2024 22:14

What a judgy sanctimonious cow you are.

My teen DC are very much into skincare, make-up and TikTok...and are also highly intelligent - both academically and emotionally - with sound values & priorities, interesting opinions and are generally great company.

The irony of somebody posting this BS and describing others as vacuous...

Mckypch · 13/05/2024 22:15

CarryOnCharon · 13/05/2024 21:57

I do not sneer at them.

You've been sneering at them for 7 pages now! I give up 😂

You've not said what you do to encourage their other interests, so I can only assume that being horrible about them makes you feel good.

FaeryRing · 13/05/2024 22:15

SundaysAndMondays · 13/05/2024 22:13

The op isn't empowering girls.

It’s not her job to do so. She’s chatting; we are replying. Yes teen culture is vacuous, damaging and actually they all look totally miserable and have anxiety so it’s not even fun

ghostyslovesheets · 13/05/2024 22:17

@FaeryRing I have 3 girls aged 22,19 and 15 - honestly non of their friends have had botox, vitamin injections and only 2 have had fillers (very minimal to iron out nose bumps) no big lips to be seen - most actual teens and young adult women aren't that influenced that they follow blindly.

FaeryRing · 13/05/2024 22:17

Then you were robbed! Should’ve gone for the £1 Natural Collection shit we all bought

CarryOnCharon · 13/05/2024 21:59

I am the queen of skincare

This is not my point

my point is the following of expensive and inappropriate trends in beauty by young girls

You just seem jealous cause the 12 year olds have skincare products you can’t afford 😂

go away with your sneering and take your cheap rubbish with you x

boredinmy30s · 13/05/2024 22:17

@FaeryRing I'm not sure the second bit is me as I didn't say anything re feminism just about consumerism 👀Confused

all?

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 13/05/2024 22:17

@FaeryRing my teenage niece doesn't have anxiety, and she's not miserable. Tell me more about ALL teenage girls, she's obviously doing it wrong so will need pointers.

FaeryRing · 13/05/2024 22:18

ghostyslovesheets · 13/05/2024 22:17

This.
I was in Space NK at the weekend for the first time in about a year. It was full of pre-teen girls.

Mental health in teens is the worst it’s ever been. Their culture is not healthy - it’s vacuous, antisocial and toxic. Change my mind 🤷🏼‍♀️
