Lemon in hair 🍋

Itssobettertobesafethansorry · 13/05/2024 18:52

Will it work?

I read that putting lemon juice on your hair and sitting in the sun can give natural highlights?
Will it also cover a few annoying greys? I’ve never had highlights and don’t want to commit unless completely necessary. Is the a genuine way or just B.S

I did it when younger and it seemed to lighten a little but could have just been the sun. I’m allergic to hair dye so have stopped getting highlights.

OldTinHat · 13/05/2024 19:01

Worked for me as a teenager, but don't think it will on greys?

Something to do with the hair structure or wotnot??

Someone more informed will be along soon, I'm sure!

DanielGault · 13/05/2024 19:02

So 90s! We also used have a thing called Sun In. Go nuts 😂

@DanielGault 😂That was awful stuff

All it could do would be lighten your hair slightly so I don't think it would do anything for your greys because there's nothing really to lighten in a grey hair - it's lost its pigment.

You don't say what your hair colour is but if it's brown, you're more likely to get red highlights than blonde if you lighten with lemon juice.

I thought it was the height of sophistication 😂😂😂

It wouldn’t lighten your hair. It often dries it out as well though.

it won’t lighten your Grey hair though. You can’t lighten grey hair to make it blonde.

RimTimTagiTim · 13/05/2024 19:07

John Frieda does a Go Blonder spray, which is more refined Sun-In. If your hair is light brown, it'll blonde it up which will mean the contrast between the blonde and the grey is less than the contrast between the brown and the grey. And it's not blanket coverage so more natural than a box die, and no roots to show either.

Hair is dark brown, like the colour, greys pissing me off! Don’t want to change the colour and glad I got to 45 with no greys, but there’s more coming through now

I use henna powder, mix with hot water to thick yoghurt/cake mix consistency, apply to hair and cover with cling film for a couple of hours before rinsing. It turns it a dark red and the white hairs are lighter so it looks like natural highlights. Lovely as it’s all natural.

Tospyornottospy · 13/05/2024 19:11

I’m watching this with interest as I have dark brown hair and a lot of greys but not enough to dye and don’t want to open that particular can of worms yet but any alternative appeals. I’m a decade younger than you OP so well done for making it so far 😀

It will likely go red. Might go blonde-ish if you keep doing it. But red first. It’s not an exact science so the results are hard to predict.

I can smell this post!

Tulipj · 13/05/2024 21:48

I’ve been known to sit in the garden with lemons on my head. It did work.

KreedKafer · 13/05/2024 21:59

It won’t cover greys. It doesn’t colour your hair. It can’t cover anything because it doesn’t deposit colour. It just drains existing colour, sometimes with really quite odd results. If your hair’s brown it might give it a slightly orangey tinge and your greys will remain grey.

It’s also not actually good for your hair. Lemon juice is a harsh, very acidic substance and pretty drying. Things aren’t automatically gentle just because they’re ‘natural’.

I wrecked my hair with Sun In before my wedding. it was custard yellow. My lovely hairdresser spent about eight hours trying to get it to a normal colour for the photos. Haha! Happy memories.

If you don’t want to change your colour, there are dyes and tints that will cover greys and will just look like your natural colour on the rest of your hair - you don’t have to dye your hair a different or darker shade to cover greys. If you ask a hairdresser they’ll advise you. You wouldn’t need fancy highlights or anything, it would be pretty uncomplicated.

rwa818 · 13/05/2024 22:13

DD has seen this on tick tok and tried it, her hair is a bit lighter i think but she is dark blonde anyway, also her hair got a bit "frazzled" looking and took a couple of washes to look ok again.
I doubt it would cover greys

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/05/2024 22:14

I did this as a teenager. It attracted wasps.

maslinpan · 13/05/2024 22:16

Straight out of Jackie magazine, along with the advice to use olive oil when sunbathing.

Neverawildchild · 13/05/2024 22:22

I've started using John Frieda's Defy Grey shampoo and conditioner. First go didn't seem to do much but second attempt I left it on longer and it's working. Grey now looks more like light brown highlights and non-grey now starting to look more brown. Worth a go as it's basically a weak henna shampoo (so won't last too long if you don't like it). Apparently the effect strengthens the more you use it.

Itssobettertobesafethansorry · 13/05/2024 22:30

@Neverawildchild Ooh that sounds good

SunshinePlease24 · 14/05/2024 00:50

It may lighten up as it dries in the sunshine, however once it's dried your hair will audibly crunch when you touch it which is never a good thing.😂
Been there, done that, left the 90's (and the lemons) behind me.😉
