My face is sagging and I have a jowl on one side (who knew it happened like that sometimes!). Just wondering if it's worth starting a clean life now in my mid 40s or if the ship has sailed and I should just embrace the good things in life.

Gave up alcohol. Has made no difference to looks or weight. Disappointingly

PotatoPudding · 12/05/2024 18:35

Some people’s faces just sag as they get older. I haven’t drunk alcohol for the best part of ten years but started to get jowls a year or two ago when I hit my mid-forties.

CoralReader · 12/05/2024 18:35

Sugar made me loose weight

CoralReader · 12/05/2024 18:35

I think sugar causes aging though

Octavia64 · 12/05/2024 18:35

I gave up alcohol

No change in anything

Alwaysaway · 12/05/2024 18:35

Have given up alcohol (6 months) and I am making better choices re food. I am 47. Best I have looked and felt in years. So excited now for the next decade.

Bruciebogtrotter · 12/05/2024 18:37

Redyced alcohol by about 95% (not quite teetotal) and there’s a massive improvement in my skin. But it’s cleared up spots on my chin that I’d had for years. No improvement in sagging. I think my skin may also be a little brighter .

insidenumber9 · 12/05/2024 18:37

Friend of mine gave up the red wine after many years and she looks much brighter in the face now and skin looks clearer

crumbledog · 12/05/2024 18:38

I don’t think you can stop time tbh. I think those suggestions may be reflected in your overall health, which in turn will give you more energy and vitality, that will make you look better.
Those are the reasons you should be focussing on to improve your diet, not to try and stop gravity.

Solidlump · 12/05/2024 18:44

I gave up alcohol and I lost weight. Tbh knowing I'll put the weight back on if I start drinking again is the main reason I'm still not drinking.
Ive definitely got a lot more energy without alcohol and my skin is a better tone - lost the redness . My memory is better and my head clearer.
I've never tried giving up sugar. I don't think I could cope with no sugar as well as no alcohol but I do try and eat a reasonably healthy diet.

Happyinarcon · 12/05/2024 18:55

I gave up sugar and I’d say it took several years off my face. I looked in the mirror one day and got a pleasant surprise

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 12/05/2024 19:00

Thanks for this thread, I was wondering the same thing. My face is getting so puffy. I expected wrinkles to be forming at 47 but this is way worse. I look so ugly I don't allow photos anymore. When I smile my eyes are like slits between 2 rolls of flesh, I may need to give up smiling altogether. But first I'm wondering if giving sugar up will help, I have a diet very high in sugar. I eat a lot of chocolate and rubbish treats.

ChristmasGutPunch · 12/05/2024 19:17

Same re looking awful. I was never pretty but it's getting bothersome now! I do know it's what's inside that counts but yknow... I suppose I could try for a month and see.

Sugar can damage your skin because of a process called glycation; it produces free radicals which damage collagen and elastin. The glycation process makes your collagen and elastin dry and brittle and the results are sagging and wrinkles.

KateMiskin · 12/05/2024 19:31

I never drank much and now I drink only once every couple of months. I also don't have a sweet tooth, so I hardly eat sugar. I look exactly like everyone else my age, neither better nor worse. I have sagging and jowls.

Sunnnybunny72 · 12/05/2024 19:32

Gave up alcohol. No difference anywhere.

5128gap · 12/05/2024 19:47

I gave up alcohol, all animal products and processed foods age 50 and started to drink water, moderate excercise and eat 8-10 plant foods per day. Its took at least ten years off me.
I also look a lot better than an ex smoker, ex junk food consumer and avid sunbather who's had more than her share of stress has any right to expect; and I attribute that entirely to the fact I've never been much of a drinker, and then only ever on nights out.
(BTW, Could your one sided jowel be dental related? Do you have a missing tooth? Or maybe hardened abscess in the jaw? And if its on the side you sleep, start sleeping on your back.)

BananaSpanner · 12/05/2024 19:50

I haven’t drunk alcohol for a couple of years. Skin is clearer and brighter but not firmer.

StarShipControl · 12/05/2024 20:05

My friend gave up sugar and started intermittent fasting and looks 10 yrs younger than her age. I keep meaning to follow her example but alas, I am too weak Sad

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/05/2024 20:22

I’ve cut out alcohol Sunday - Thursday, and joined a gym.

I’ve lost 1/2 stone in 3 months, my double chin is smaller and my skin looks brighter.

i’m 49.

i got to the point when I decided it was now or never to make changes if I want to stay healthy and active as I get older. I don’t want to be getting towards retirement and be restricted in what I can do.

junecat · 12/05/2024 20:22

I gave up alcohol 18 months ago. Lost 2 stone, my skin if clear and firmer and I sleep really well.

I'm 52 and it definitely made a huge difference to me x

YankSplaining · 12/05/2024 20:23

I’m jealous of anyone who loses weight by cutting out alcohol - I’m a lifelong non-drinker, so I don’t have any to cut!

BruFord · 12/05/2024 20:28

I’m similar to @Bruciebogtrotter , I’ve almost given up alcohol, I only have one drink on social occasions now (I used to drink wine at home twice a week). Substituted the wine for water and my skin looks great.

I've only lost a pound though. At nearly 50, think I’d have to cut back on everything to lose more. 🤷

Onand · 12/05/2024 20:32

Stopping alcohol will make your Liver smile, your skin will start to look clearer as the blotchy redness subsides. You will have more energy and clarity, those days of brain fog and ropey hangovers will fade away.

Drinking plenty of water, incorporating a decent skin care routine (glycolic toner, double cleanse, hydration, spf) will help make the best of what you have, eat healthy, no smoking or vaping and plenty of sleep will all go towards that feeling of ‘a good day’.

Merryoldgoat · 12/05/2024 20:36

I drink and eat a lot of sugar. I’m a fucking state physically but look young facially.

Genes I suppose? My aunt in her late 60s is regularly mistaken for my 10yo son’s mum.
