My face is sagging and I have a jowl on one side (who knew it happened like that sometimes!). Just wondering if it's worth starting a clean life now in my mid 40s or if the ship has sailed and I should just embrace the good things in life.

This is giving me hope! I'd love to look better at 50 than 46. I've lost 16lbs so that's something but I've a long way to go. What's the point of no return age wise, or is there one? I mean the time when there is nothing you can do to improve or reverse.

Elephantswillnever · 12/05/2024 20:43

Gave up booze. My skin is much better, I looked really puffy before with a sort of ruddy complexion and dark circles under my eyes. Managed to lose 10kg too so am down to a 14 due to diet and exercise. I really want to get to a normal bmi by 45.

WingSlutz · 12/05/2024 20:45

Gave up booze. No change in anything. I'm 49. Sorry!

KvotheTheBloodless · 12/05/2024 20:46

I'd never give up sugar, but giving up alcohol made a huge difference to my appearance - much better skin, no jowls, and I have a 6-pack of muscles rather than beer!

Yupppp · 13/05/2024 01:18

I see a difference in my skin if I go one week without booze, I can only imagine what it’d be like after six months (regrettably I’ll probably never find out).

peppermintrock · 13/05/2024 05:27

Maybe not in the immediate short-term, but not being dead of complications of diabetes or multiple cases in my friendship group of throat, oesophageal, and other alcohol-related cancers has certainly improved my appearanc.e

stronglatte · 13/05/2024 05:57

Have one drink a week after I heard Gwyneth did that and love it . I've lost a dress size and skin is much better - I think it was the alcohol but also the snacks and extra food after drinking . I wish I had done it years ago .. I've got so much more energy and am in my 50s .. also means exercise is a lot less arduous !

Highlighta · 13/05/2024 06:15

I stopped drinking alcohol a couple of years back, I will have some occasionally and only socially.

I think it's made a difference. I used to have a lot of bloating that I don't have now and quite a few people have commented that I look more radiant these days. I haven't changed much make up wise, but I just feel better and healthier and I think that just shows.

Why don't you just try it for a month or so and see how you feel? Sugar/alcohol effects can give the face a bit of a swollen or bloated look.

I dont take sugar in tea or coffee, so can't comment there. There is that staying that if you can drink both without sugar for two weeks, you will never go back. I think it's true as if I sip someone else's tea with sugar in, it's really ghastly tasting to me.

stopping alcohol will make your Liver smile, your skin will start to look clearer as the blotchy redness subsides. You will have more energy and clarity, those days of brain fog and ropey hangovers will fade away

Agree with this and have felt it.
I gave up alcohol as it was giving me awful anxiety. I've lost half a stone and my skin is glowing. The quality of my sleep has improved massively as a result so I suspect it probably that helping too. Also, I dont feel low level groggy in the mornings. Much more energy too. Alcohol increases inflammation in the body so it can definitely make you look bloated and increases facial redness and puffiness. If you want a quick term fix for tightening up the face try Clarins Facial V intensive wrap mask- put it on for 10 mins and when you take it off it will have de-puffed your face and tightened up the jaw line, It really works.

Sausagenbacon · 13/05/2024 06:43

I'm 66, and have been a binger on sugary/fatty foods all my life. A month ago I decided that had to stop, and I cut them out completely (plus less alcohol).
I look better, but much more importantly, and surprisingly, I feel 100% better. Much more positive about life.

ChristmasGutPunch · 13/05/2024 09:46

I think the evidence shows that people who drink a little are much healthier than teetotallers (though appreciate there are some confounding factors) so I'm not too worried about that side of things. I don't get hangovers or anything. I do have a big ruddy rosacea face :(

Thanks, going to try this!

I don't think there's a specific age of no reverse as we're all different (excellent question though, as might as well take it to the wire! Lol.) but I do think some damage when it appears can't be reversed naturally. So, while you can improve fine lines and dullness and get a glow, any deep furrows and sagging is probably going to need some procedures to deal with. As far as bodies go, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that at 50, a 37" 24" 37" hourglass was still there under my apple shape once the weight was off, but some crinkles and saggy skin are the price of that, so its too late for me to be smooth and toned. Which is why clothes are a wonderful thing.

TheFraud · 14/05/2024 20:53

Gave up booze at 43. I looked better within about 6 months (but I did drink a lot!).

47 now. Teetotal. 1.5 stones lighter than I was when I stopped, my skin is much brighter and face less puffy. When I look at photos of myself before I stopped, I can see that bloated wine drinker’s face and the piggy eyes, although I didn’t realise it at the time.

entervalidusername · 14/05/2024 21:05

Gave up alcohol Jan 23 and have put on nearly 4 stone

Jumpingthruhoops · 14/05/2024 21:10

No alcohol, caffeine or sugar. Eat mainly wholefoods.
I'm often told by people I look about 10 years younger than I actually am. Works for me!

🤔Did you replace the alcohol with sweets, crisps and chocolate or something?

QueenAstrid · 14/05/2024 21:14

Watching this thread for motivation/inspiration. I’m a complete sugar addict and I’m not happy with how my face is aging. Going to try and give it up. Any tips as to how?

Macbeff · 14/05/2024 21:17

I gave up most sugar - the refined kind in biscuits, sweets, etc. I looked better because I lost weight.

KreedKafer · 14/05/2024 21:26

I think giving up alcohol only makes a visible difference to your skin if you previously drank quite a lot of it. I had to stop drinking for several months a few years ago due to medication I was on and it made absolutely zero difference to my appearance. But I wasn’t really someone who drank every day, or even every week.

I have also massively cut back on sugar and if anything my skin looks considerably worse! But I think that’s coincidence and probably hormonal - I’m getting spots around my jawline which is a classic hormonal thing for me.

The only two lifestyle factors that have ever made my skin look better are:

  • A diligent skincare routine
  • Regular, strenuous exercise, especially outdoors

Drinking water has never made the slightest difference to my skin either.

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 14/05/2024 21:27

Some of those who’ve lost numerous stones giving up booze must have really been knocking it back 😂
@QueenAstrid just don’t buy it or bake it. If it’s not available you can’t nibble on it. I do have a pudding on a Sunday but that’s it although I’ll have a couple of spoonfuls of blueberries and a small dollop of full fat vanilla yoghurt from m and s if I feel peckish. I’ve also started 16:8 diet which has helped massively.

OneTC · 14/05/2024 21:31

I gave up drinking for approx 20 years and never really drink much since I started again. I look quite young for my age I am told.

I don't know if you get years back from stopping it though, I was young when I quit

Emmerald · 14/05/2024 21:37

Reduced alcohol (no alcohol jan 1st - April 3rd) then just a couple of glasses of wine on 1 day of a weekend since. I'm already dieting, (2.5 stone off since last July) and face and eyelids are far less puffy since the alcohol reduced. Just at the stage where I've hit my weight target but deciding if that's enough or to continue for another 7 pounds.

SchoolQuestionnaire · 14/05/2024 21:46

I’ve given up both. Alcohol since Jan and sugar only in the last month. My skin looks great. Several people have commented that I look well or asked what skincare I’m using. Unfortunately the arse is still humongous which is disappointing.
