To ask how much you spend on holidays per year?

I haven't been abroad in years and a bit shocked after seeing the prices these days. Even a week in a nearby European country is expensive on a budget airline.

I have family members who take 4-5 holidays/trips a year and they must be spending a fortune!

About £8-9k

Paid 1500 for a week in Majorca in the Easter hols this year - villa, car hire and flights.
More expensive next year as we're off to USA so kept it cheap this year. Have just been amazed at the price of a 2w AI in Europe in the school hols so more than happy with the price we've got America for.

We can blow an absolute fortune on one holiday to visit family in Oz as there’s five of us needing to travel in school hols. Airfares are crazy. Accom in Oz is pricey and bc there’s 5 of us we always need a big Airbnb or 2 hotel rooms. Plus a bigger hire car to fit 5 and luggage. Food is also pricey out there.
It really does depend on the size and age of the family, school holiday travel and where you travel to. I am finding it’s harder to go cheaply now the ‘kids’ are young adults not just bc things are dearer but bc we can’t squidge together and also bc I want more comfort and luxury than I did when they were little.

It really varies. We have a ‘big’ holiday this year which will be around £15K including spending, but that’s the most we’ve ever spent on one holiday. Last year maybe £10k, between an AI summer holiday and a couple of city breaks. We both have decent paying jobs and that’s what we like to spend our money on. When we were younger and earned less we still tried to get away a few times a year, but it was just shorter and cheaper breaks!

Kitkat1523 · 13/05/2024 00:00

Tbf this year got off to a good start , but so far we have done ;
Australia / Singapore ( special holiday)
Northumberland 4 night cottage
london 2 nights hotel
amsterdam 4 nights hotel
wales 2 nights hotel

we will have a further 2 holidays in Europe and a few more U.K. short breaks
likely spend for year is 15k for 2 of us …but I’m late 50s …mortgage paid… car paid for..AC all grown and flown….and still earning ….so if I can’t do it now then I never will

Franticbutterfly · 13/05/2024 21:03

If we go. 5-6k (family of 5).

wonkylegs · 14/05/2024 17:14

We're spending a lot this year because we are doing a big trip to N. California for a family wedding. It's a one off and aspects of the trip are dictated by the event.
It's also the first long haul trip our kids will have been on, made more expensive by the fact that the eldest now pretty much counts as an adult for everything (probably fair enough as he's huge).
Finances are complicated as parts of it we are sharing accommodation/ car hire with family. We can comfortably afford it though by dipping into savings.

Smarshian · 14/05/2024 17:29

This year is a particularly extravagant year.
Japan 2 weeks - £15k plus spends (approx £2.5k)
Tenerife week- £4.5k plus spends (approx £1.5k)
Uk 10 days - free accommodation so spends (approx £1.5k)
Norway long weekend just me and Dh - £800 plus spends (say £500)
Seville long weekend (just me) - £350 plus spends (approx £300)
So £27k.
Usually wouldn’t have the Japan trip so nearer £10k

Flights and 2 s/c appartments in Germany in August are £4K for three of us. No idea about costs for food as I don't really count this.

We will still need a rental car for one week.

Belgium/France in May half term are around £2K without food (Eurotunnel, hotel, s/c appartment and petrol)

ducksinarow123 · 14/05/2024 20:52

2022 we spent about £12,000
2023 £500
2024 £2000
2025 (already booked) £5000

So on average £4-£5k a year, some years more and some less.

Thistooshallpass. · 14/05/2024 21:11

Holidays are probably our biggest expenditure . This year it will total £100k.
Two lots of 2 week long haul for 4 (all adult price now)
One week short haul for 4
Two lots of 5 day long haul for 2 people
4x city breaks for 2

All the flights are business class which is where a lot of the cost is - be good when the kids don't want to come .. but showing no signs of that !

DoAWheelie · 14/05/2024 21:16

My late OH needed oxygen so we had to travel with tanks and that limited how long we could go away for. Usually just a long weekend and somewhere within a 3 hour journey as he'd struggle longer than that.

We'd spend about £500 per trip and go about once a year.

Before he got that unwell we'd do a week long trip for about £1k each time plus one or two weekend trips so about £2k a year.
