To think the cinema is a day to day event

Not an experience or day out

OP posts:
Mountainhowl · 12/05/2024 08:25

It was a regular outing for us bsck when orange Wednesdays were a thing, but not now it'll cost us over £20 not including the kids, we are with octopus energy so I'm off to Google that as it was mentioned above

We don't have a local cinema though, have to drive 20-25mins to the nearest big town

Pluviophile1 · 12/05/2024 08:26

Given the price for tickets and snacks, if it's a family trip to the cinema, then it's an event.

Coconutter24 · 12/05/2024 08:29

Yes YABU to say that. For some it maybe a day to day event and others yes it will be an experience. Everyone has different budgets.

Nonewclothes2024 · 12/05/2024 08:30

I have a monthly pass £20 see as many films as you like. Free parking up to 3 hours.
Don't take food , take a drink from home.
So not a big expense.

Get something from meerkat & there’s your cheap tickets

So purchase something I don’t need or that’s more expensive in order to get a discount at the cinema?

Bjorkdidit · 12/05/2024 08:33

You can buy a one day, UK only travel insurance policy for under a fiver which qualifies you for a year's 2 for 1 pass, so great value if you go to the cinema with a friend or partner.

We buy a one day insurance for travel, @ a cost of approx 4quid, no we dont need it & to date have never used it but thats the loophole 4£ for a yr of 241 is an absolute no brainer. 4£ is a pint in my books

The parking isn’t free for us. It’s NCP, so not cheap.

Indo t understand what people are saying about the meercats.

Temporary car insurance doesn't give access to those rewards.

Maybe it did in the past, but not now.

ETA; oh it's travel insurance, not a day of car insurance. I'll go look

Travel insurance.

Baneofmyexistence · 12/05/2024 08:40

Definitely a treat for us but not an ‘experience’ no. It’s way too expensive for the five of us to go with any regularity.

LemonadeQueen · 12/05/2024 08:41

Yep rare treat. Even if take own snacks in.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 12/05/2024 08:42

It’s not an experience in our household. It’s a treat in that it’s a nice thing to do, but definitely an ordinary, every day sort of treat. Some combination of the 5 of us will go a couple of times a month to see a film.

We have been taking all 3 children since they turned 2. Cinema has always been part of their lives.

Tickets in our nearest cinema are 6.99. That compares very favorably with the theatre and with most other paid for activities. For us it’s a regular, affordable activity. I don’t go in for buying snacks and drinks though. We go in the afternoon after lunch, or the evening after dinner and just watch the film. If it’s a birthday then I will go all out and buy snacks and drinks and then it does become a bit more of an event.

mitogoshi · 12/05/2024 08:43

It's cheap here so nothing special. It's £5.99 for adults, you can barely buy a drink for that

Ah, OK. That’s a good idea.

Walker1178 · 12/05/2024 08:44

We’ve got an Odeon local to us with free parking and all tickets just £5 so it’s something we’ll pop down to if we fancy a movie that’s on. We take our own drinks and usually a share bag of malteasers, I definitely don’t consider it to be a day out but that’s probably because it’s 5mins away and only costs us £10

TuesdayWhistler · 12/05/2024 08:45

Mycatmyworld · 12/05/2024 08:38

Travel insurance.

Yep.

Apparently I'm going to Scotland on Wednesday and need insurance for it... (I'm not and I don't)

The cheapest I found was £1.01p
So if that gives access to the rewards, and the rewards are of use, that's a pretty good little deal.

Saving £5 on one trip to the cinema pays for the Travel Insurance.

(I'm a bit concerned it's so cheap and worry they'll sell my.infomration, but hey ho)

LyricalGangsta · 12/05/2024 08:45

Unaffordable for us

There was a thread recently about a trip to a trampoline park being a normal weekend activity, not a treat. I was too embarrassed to say the same about that but I'm saying it now.

Susuwatariandkodama · 12/05/2024 08:46

A cinema visit is definitely a treat, it’s stupidly expensive!

CranfordScones · 12/05/2024 08:46

No - it's 'going out' or 'treat' territory for many people.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/05/2024 08:47

I wouldn't call it day to day, it's definitely a treat. When I was a kid I probably went once a week, but that was the 80s.
Now I'd say there needs a good reason to go. A film that would really warrant the big screen or that you can't stream, pirate or whatever.
Cinema plus meal out is definitely a whole evenings entertainment. I wouldn't say it's exactly a 'day out' though. I associate days out with being outdoors, or visiting a new city or theme park etc. it could be part of one though.

Mycatmyworld · 12/05/2024 08:48

Just checked meerkat for a one day travel I can get it for £1.01. single person now THATS a bargain

UnimaginableWindBird · 12/05/2024 08:51

It's £13 for the cheapest cinema near me, or £14.40 for the Everyman. There is a cheaper Vue, but that involves an hour long bus journey for £4 per person or around £25 in taxi fares.

I can get a cheap ticket to my local, vey good, theatre for £15, so for me, going to the cinema is on a par with going to theatre, and for arts showings etc is more expensive than live theatre, occasionally for the same production.

wejammin · 12/05/2024 08:51

Definitely a treat in our house. 3 kids so it's at least £50, plus it's in our local huge out of town shopping centre so I always descends into a look in the shops, which I generally avoid if I can help it. Take our own food and drink but someone always wants an ice cream.
We tend to go when we're on summer holiday on a rainy day (camping), and maybe once in the Christmas holidays.

Icantpossibly · 12/05/2024 08:52

It’s certainly a treat for me. I live rurally so have to drive and pay for parking. I can only afford to go every couple of months or so.
