Need to ask ex to take dog to vet

OneLemonOrca · 10/05/2024 01:17

My dog needs to go to the vet she’s showing signs of being in pain as she has been eating less, licking her paws excessively and making swallowing and gulping sounds all the time. I can’t take her and I have family nearby who can’t commit to taking her any time soon but they have in the past when they were able. I don’t have friends in real life to ask as I only socialise online or with my neighbours but am not close enough to them to ask.
My ex boyfriend who I don’t see would do it for me as they love my dog very much but when I have asked him in the past he has sort of tried to use it as an opportunity to get back with me but on that occasion a family member told me they could take her after all. I don’t know how to ask him when he wants to get back together or how I would manage it as he lives several hours away and would probably want to sleep over. I don’t have feelings for him any more but he is very pushy.

Why can't you take her?

Book a pet friendly taxi.

Book a home visit vet.

Do this today as your dog is suffering!

Because I’m agoraphobic

Get a vet who will come out to you. I didn't realise it was a thing but there are loads of vets who only do home visits.
Let us know your rough area OP and we may be able to help you find one. Your dog deserves to be seen asap

OneLemonOrca · 10/05/2024 01:23

I am asking how I could manage asking him to do this without it causing too many problems

I am in Morayshire

How does she get walked?

Josette77 · 10/05/2024 01:26

I don't think you can ask him. It would be cruel knowing he wants to get back together.

Do you have a dog walker you can ask? Who normally takes your dog out?

OneLemonOrca · 10/05/2024 01:28

Standingupstandingout · 10/05/2024 01:25

How does she get walked?

i can walk to the park over the road from my house where she can run around. I also have a garden. That is it.

Contact a dog sitter and ask if they can take her. Otherwise look for a vet who does house calls.

It would be mean to use your ex this way.

OneLemonOrca · 10/05/2024 01:37

I didn’t realise dog walkers or dog sitters would take a dog to the vet? Don’t they need insurance for that? Isn’t that outside of their job role?

Some vets do collection and drop off services for housebound clients. There are independent firms who operate animal ambulances and taxis for this service. Dog walkers again can offer taxi services for dogs. As PP have said, there are many vets who do home appointments

OneLemonOrca · 10/05/2024 01:38

I am worried how much a home appointment might cost compared to taking her in. Or if they would be able to take in the machinery or equipment required to properly test her for what is wrong? As it is unknown

Many vets will do house calls it's very normal

DaftyLass · 10/05/2024 01:51

As a responsible dog owner, you need to reach out to your vet and ask for their advice, I'm sure this isn't the first time that this has happened

Domino20 · 10/05/2024 01:54

I'm in Fochabers and have a car. Is that close to you?

Blueberryancakes · 10/05/2024 01:54

I work at a vets - ours vets would only do a house visit for an emergency- we also charge £300 for a visit and that’s before any treatment.

Part of being a responsible dog owner is to be able to provide it medical treatment when necessary and you clearly can’t do this. I would suggest not getting another dog in the future.

Your dog deserves veterinary treatment - you’ll have to phone your ex and ask them to do it and deal with the consequences of them wanting to get back with you - this is not important at the moment - if you loved your dog you wouldn’t hesitate on asking your ex to do this.

Im sorry if this all sounds harsh but you have to put your dog first- suck it up and get on with it. You are letting your dog down massively!

What if it was an emergency and she was extremely poorly and needed putting to sleep? You’d have no choice but to get to the vet’s.

Not all vets are like this though.

The most important thing is that OP gets her pet medical attention it's no bad thing to enquire with a range of vets as to whether they do routine House calls.

Blueberryancakes · 10/05/2024 02:01

Some vets may be happy to do a house visit but all with charge a lot for it.

AbFabDaaaaahling · 10/05/2024 02:11

OP - I hope you are getting help for your condition - I can't imagine how difficult your life must be. Are you able to work? To see anyone?
Hope your dog is much better soon.

ZombieBoob · 10/05/2024 02:23

I'm elgin way if I can help any?

Ponderingwindow · 10/05/2024 02:51

My pet sitter has taken my cat to the vet.

I handled payment, some discussions, and major decision making over the phone. She was actually more informed about the immediate situation because I was out of town so she did participate in the appointment.

I would hire someone to transport your dog to the vet and you can do the rest by phone or video chat.

During Covid that is how my vet did things. We brought pet to office. Let went inside. We stayed outside and talked on phone. We now go inside for the actual visit, but all intake and post visit business is done with us outside on our phones. It’s actually a lot less stressful for the animals because they don’t have to be in communal spaces with other animals. just direct to an exam room and back out to your car.

Rubyupbeat · 10/05/2024 04:56

Your dog is suffering, you should phone all the dog sitters, dog walkers in your area until you find one that will take her. These people should, legally be insured.
Even if you need to take out a loan for her treatment, its your obligation. PDSA will treat one animal per household if you are on benefits.
Please get it done ASAP as she sounds in a bad way.

ClockworkDisaster · 10/05/2024 13:40

I don’t think it’s fair to ask your ex to drive several hours to take your dog to vet tbh. As others have said there are lots of options available to you. I would also suggest you get a regular dog walker as going out in your garden and one park across the road isn’t good enough I’m afraid. Your dog needs to have more variety in her life.
