HELP! Kidney beans trying to kill me!

Caerulea · 10/05/2024 00:41

I'm in desperate need of trapped burp remedies. I'm under investigation for IBS (& all the other things) & made the stupid mistake of eating (really well cooked) Kidney beans for dinner, which was moronic.

Tried peppermint tea, hot water bottle, massage from DH, tempted by two years out of date gaviscon. Son has gone on an hour long round trip to find me Rennies.

Brief relief on meatiest burps but the beans are just in there fucking fermenting or some shit! It's hurting right up my spine & both my sodding shoulders.

So please - anything, anything at all! Cos this is wild!

Buscopan or Colofac would be better than Rennies - they're specifically for IBS cramps.

ComingInByAnsible · 10/05/2024 00:46

Sympathy! You need activated charcoal, at least that's what helped me with similar.

ThinWomansBrain · 10/05/2024 00:47

this'll sound weird, but if I get an upset stomach etc, diet coke.

Caerulea · 10/05/2024 00:48

@WearyAuldWumman unfortunately there's not an open chemist or supermarket anywhere near us.

Son just got back, the garage didn't even have rennies though the guy working had some himself so donated some. It's definitely the wind causing the pain but something else causing this insane reaction. I've a phone call with the gastro ppl at the hospital tomorrow,

Thank you for the suggestions of charcoal & coke, unfortunately I've neither to hand 😭

I tried ginger beer to no avail.

DH wanted to call an ambulance that's how much this hurts

IBS sufferer who gets hideous trapped wind and reflux sometimes

yoga: Cat-Cow stretch followed by child’s pose - helps shift the pressure and sometimes moves it enough to release

My husband has literally had to
burp me like a baby before… a good shoogle of my sides can sometimes do the trick

Walking, not sitting still.

Turmeric and warm water

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 10/05/2024 00:55

Absolutely yoga and an (ahem) 'open mind' is what you need. Lots of cat cow, then right down into child's pose. Repeat and repeat.

cherryassam · 10/05/2024 00:58

Lying on back with knees up to chest and rocking side to side can also help

plus the foetal position can be at least a bit more comfortable

Caerulea · 10/05/2024 01:00

OK we're going in on the cat cow jobby - I have to do that when my herniated disc is being bellendrical.

Laying on my back hurt even more cos the pain is so high already

I'm so sorry. When I'm like that, Buscopan or Calpol helps. (I got a diagnosis of IBS 20 yrs ago.)

hoonicorn · 10/05/2024 01:04

IBS is usually the diagnosis after ruling everything else out.
Could this be gallbladder related? Have you had that checked? The pain is similar to where gallbladder would be especially if radiating to the back/shoulder.

Nothing else to add but hope you find some relief soon.

cherryassam · 10/05/2024 01:07

DH just reminded me that a warm bath sometimes helps too

So had a abdo scan couple of years ago, tiny polyp in gallbladder, nothing else. The pain is equal across my diaphragm left to right Sides. Currently got a faecal calprotectin test in, bloods show no markers for anything at all. No nausea/vomiting.

I actually put a post up in general health earlier asking how to avoid a default IBS diagnosis. I don't want a camera up my bum, but I want a camera up my bum

Try lying on your bed with a firm pillow under you belly and roll back and forth over it.

Really, you need to blast it out with laxatives...

Caerulea · 10/05/2024 01:21

@frankincenseandmyrrh it would be agony to lean on it, it wants to come up rather than down too.

QueenBitch666 · 10/05/2024 01:23

Get someone to give you a vigorous foot massage. The feet are full of pressure points. Works on me with my night shift trapped wind 💨

frankincenseandmyrrh · 10/05/2024 01:23

In that case, it shoudn't take long to move down to the next section and cause worse pain there!

frankincenseandmyrrh · 10/05/2024 01:24

Use the out of date gaviscon.

This will sound daft, but I find a corset helps. I don’t have IBS (that I know of!) but do have problems with very slow digestion and a stomach that doesn’t work properly, which means I get the most appalling bloating and pain if I eat too much or the wrong foods. If it happens I put on a corset and lace it tightly on my waist, and it sort of stops my tummy puffing up. It still hurts, as everything presses against the corset, but it hurts a lot less than without it, as my stomach can’t distend as much. Plus as the gas doesn’t have room to stay where it is, it seems more likely to exit, as it were. I also sometimes lie with my stomach on the arm of the sofa and rest my weight in it to force the gas out and bloaty tummy back in. Might be worth a try if you don’t have a handy corset lying around? This may be the worst thing you can do with IBS, in which case I apologise, but thought it was worth mentioning in case!

AllTheChaos · 10/05/2024 01:26

The bum camera is not fun! If you have it, make sure you get decent pain relief, I didn’t and it huuuurt! They can remove the polyps straight away, which is good, but also painful :(

INeedToClingToSomething · 10/05/2024 01:32

I have ibs.

Peppermint tea and a hot water bottle can help it pass. If you have any indigestion though peppermint will make that worse so be careful.

Medication wise it may be worth getting in some windeze for the future. That does sort it although it takes a bit of time to work.

I did a low FODMAP diet to work out my triggers and it was life changing. My issue seems to be galactans and to a lesser extent fructans (mainly for me if I eat a LOT of onion and also any garlic). I use these digestive enzymes before eating anything with beans, garlic or onions and they have sorted my IBS completely (it had become really debilitating before the diet):

Seconding getting DH to burp you! Mine has become expert over the years (I have IBS) and doesn't seem remotely bothered by the enormous man-burps it produces, bless him Smile Lots of vigorous rubbing, back, shoulders and sides, you will feel what's working and what's not, sometimes patting shifts it too. It's not romantic that's for sure but oh, the relief when it works. If none of the advice you've had does the trick though I do think you need to consider it may not be wind and seek medical attention, really hope that's all it is and it moves soon Flowers

Caerulea · 10/05/2024 01:34

OK none of the things that have been suggested that I can do have worked. Rennies done zip except reduce the need to burp. This is agony, I feel like someone is crushing my spine in the middle. It hurts to breath in deeply in my diaphragm too

Do I just go A&E at this point?

OP posts:
cherryassam · 10/05/2024 01:36

I would call 111 maybe? How far is A&E for you?

The intensity of the pain does sound concerning.

UnctuousUnicorns · 10/05/2024 01:38

A heaped teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda stirred into a small glass of water, then drunk quickly while still fizzing usually helps me. It should make you belch a lot! I hope you get some relief. 🙏
