To think it’s too much hassle to sell clothes and I should just bring them to the charity shop

I’ve got a lot of lovely unworn clothes I’d like to sell online but it seems like I’ll get about fiver for a dress that cost me £40 and is still in perfect condition, or £30 for a brand new All Saints biker jacket that cost me £350! Or £3 for a perfect condition item from a brand like H&M.

It seems a lot of hassle taking the pics, doing the descriptions, then posting them. But at the same time it feels like such a waste of money to not get something for them…

wwyd?

yABU - sell them online
yanbu - just give it to charity

Depends how much you need the money. If you don't just give to charity. I do so I sell on Vinted. I don't really mind the packing up and posting but I find it easier if I put a lot of things on at once then have a break for a few weeks. No selling fees any longer on eBay but seller has to pay postage, unlike Vinted.

viccat · 09/05/2024 21:39

Yes, years ago it was much better. I remember when a Boden dress would sell for good money on eBay. Not these days and it takes ages to pack and queue in the Post Office.

One thing I did in January was to send a bag of stuff to Thrift+. It has nearly all now sold. The commission is small but at least a £20 or so voucher can then be used to buy something I'll actually like and wear.

Vastlyoverrated · 09/05/2024 21:41

I think you have to work out what that time packing up and sending is worth to you, and that depends how rich you are and how near your local post office or Evri or Inpost lockers are- you can set it only ones you want to use on Vinted.

I don't sell stuff as my stuff tends to sit there for ages, my teenagers use it lots and sell lots and make loads of money! To them it's worth it, to me, not so much.

CreamLampshade · 09/05/2024 21:42

Yea to be fair I have done Thrift+ before and apparently they have changed the model so you get paid cash now. I might order a bag.

nice to know it’s not just me thet finds it too much. I’ve got a small home and just hate looking at bags of crap. We’ve ended up putting some in the boot of the car and I just need to get rid but for some reason find getting around to it extremely difficult! (I do have adhd and admin not my strong point! )

I sold a few things on a local Facebook marketplace. They picked up the items and I got cash. Not sure I could bothered with Vinted or Ebay, plus postage costs so much I'm not sure people will buy unless it's a higher value item.

Seagrassbasket · 09/05/2024 21:43

I listed a load of stuff on Vinted a few weeks ago. No one bought any of it and I’m taking it to the charity shop this weekend. Life’s too short!

Supersimkin2 · 09/05/2024 21:44

Charity shops rag perfectly decent clothes in good areas, so Vinted if you want to
recycle them properly.

Or give kids’ clothes away on Olio - the person collects! Excellent news.

thecrispfiend · 09/05/2024 21:46

I find kids clothes sell pretty well on vinted. I sell most of sons stuff on there - bought a load of self sealing post bags so easy to Chuck an item in and take to my local newsagent on way home from school run. I've changed settings so I only send via Evri - buyer pays for postage and the shop prints the labels. I let the balance build up then buy stuff he needs like bigger size clothes or wetsuit etc. feels good to not buy new all the time and selling doesn't take up much of my time as it's built into my walk to school.

Stoufer · 09/05/2024 21:48

I have a friend that works in a charity shop, the charity is for a local children’s hospice. She says the work they do is amazing, and has visited the children in the hospice - she said this really puts things in perspective, and makes her want to make as much for the charity as she can. So while it may feel like a failure (if you don’t sell the clothes and get something back from them), they could make a massive difference to a local charity.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 09/05/2024 21:50

I think it’s a way to make a good deed out of my laziness! Give it to charity.

nutbrownhare15 · 09/05/2024 21:51

I did a bit during the pandemic but I just don't have time now. It all goes to charity. Even a dress agency is extra hassle if they don't want it.

Pepperama · 09/05/2024 21:52

Charity shop here too - I’d otherwise donate money to cancer research and children’s charities so why not save myself the time and give them some good quality items to sell? And someone is going to really enjoy finding these items in the charity shop

NoSmallThing · 09/05/2024 21:55

I’ve always just given things to the charity shop or occasionally a church collecting for refugees. Selling stuff wasn’t worth the hassle for me.

JustPleachy · 09/05/2024 22:04

I would happily send to charity shop if I thought it actually got sold/reused, but I think a lot just gets binned

CountingCors · 09/05/2024 23:27

I felt exactly the same way, and I gave lots of my nice clothes to charity shops. Then I finally decided to give vinted a go as my husband wanted to sell something and it's so easy. I've made so much money from dribs and drabs. I wish I hadn't given all the good stuff away already!!

Time40 · 09/05/2024 23:38

I sell anything that's going to go for over £20. You could do bundles, in order to get one sale up to a rate that's worth your time? If you've got the right sort of auction house within easy reach, sending clothing and accessories to auction is a very, very easy way of getting rid of it.

Maverick66 · 09/05/2024 23:51

I left five bags of stuff in to local charity shop .
They have a Facebook page which they put any items they think will sell on.
So far they have made around £100 from what I donated.
I'm very happy about that. I may no have money to donate to said charity but at least I can support them by donating unwanted clothing.

OneLemonOrca · 10/05/2024 01:51

People do buy used clothes all the time so who knows someone might want to buy yours. That said I don’t bother trying to sell things anymore because I can’t deal with all the nonsense

GogAndMagog · 10/05/2024 02:59

I gave a bag of stuff to my daughters to sell - they can keep the profits for spending and I don't have the hassle.

They really enjoy it!

dancingfairy1 · 10/05/2024 03:04

I was the same, with brand new unworn clothes. I try sell the more expensive items (leather jacket etc) but I took huge piles to the charity store and felt good about it. I rarely make monetary donations so this is my way of contributing to the society I guess... Not really but it's better than nothing

PieFaces · 10/05/2024 04:34

Anything over £10 I’d sell online. The rest I give to charity or friends. I don’t otherwise give anything to charity so I consider my poor Vinted purchases charitable.

THisbackwithavengeance · 10/05/2024 05:17

Do you need the money?

Would you rather be doing something else than listing clothes on Vinted and trekking to post office?

Are these clothes taking up space and causing clutter?

If the answers are: No, Yes, Yes then take to charity. If it's Yes, No, No then sell on Vinted!

Oblomov24 · 10/05/2024 06:54

I agree it's such a faff, and you get nothing but grief, I've stopped selling now.
