To think it’s too much hassle to sell clothes and I should just bring them to the charity shop

I’ve got a lot of lovely unworn clothes I’d like to sell online but it seems like I’ll get about fiver for a dress that cost me £40 and is still in perfect condition, or £30 for a brand new All Saints biker jacket that cost me £350! Or £3 for a perfect condition item from a brand like H&M.

It seems a lot of hassle taking the pics, doing the descriptions, then posting them. But at the same time it feels like such a waste of money to not get something for them…

wwyd?

yABU - sell them online
yanbu - just give it to charity

Just give them to charity years ago I tried to sell stuff on ebay i hated packing and posting I know there is better sites now but it all seems such a faff !

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2024 21:19

Oh sell your jacket if you can.

Autumn1990 · 09/05/2024 21:20

It doesn’t take long to list in Vinted and eBay now has no fees for clothes

Stainglasses · 09/05/2024 21:20

Sell anything worth £5 and above and put the rest in the charity shop. That’s what I’ve done.

Helenmelon74 · 09/05/2024 21:21

I started selling things on vinted but got so fed up with packaging and sending I ended it all and took it to the charity shop! I'd definitely sell the jacket though!

Mairzydotes · 09/05/2024 21:22

I feel like that too. So they just sit in the cupboard

Hoglet70 · 09/05/2024 21:23

Selling anything is such a faff. You put something amazing on for £5 and someone immediately messages you offering £2.50 and please can you deliver it personally to my house.

Thepeppapigfanclub · 09/05/2024 21:24

Total waste of time and a poor use of your time when you factor in the time IMO. I couldn't be bothered.

Investinmyself · 09/05/2024 21:24

For a £350 jacket is there a local dress agency. There’s one in town nr me that sells labels/mother of bride type outfits - they take a cut.

LaMarschallin · 09/05/2024 21:25

I couldn't be botheted to sell for a few pounds here and there, but I recently sold a dress on Vinted for £80. It had cost over £200 and I'd worn it once for a few hours.
It all was really easy and I just left the money sitting in my Vinted account, so when I buy the odd thing (couple of tops so far) it feels like free money.
So I'd give selling the jacket a go. Price 5 or 10% over what you really want as everyone seems to make offers.

Charity shop

KitKatChunki · 09/05/2024 21:26

I used to be so good at selling all of dad's clothes from birth to about 8...then I just cba. It was the whole packing them up and posting and keeping receipts, the cost of posting usually being as much as the purchase price, or only £10 more. The parcels that took ages to sell and took up space. I just one day thought of all the time/petrol=effort and how much someone at the local charity might love to have a real "find" of a Boden dress or whatever.

soupfiend · 09/05/2024 21:26

Ive had this dilemma, Ive lost a lot of weight. I gave them all to the charity, tons of things I was going to 'slim into' for years and years, by the time I got to it I'd gone past it!!

Two things made me give them away, firstly I wanted them out of my life, they represented the fat me (fatter me, still a bit fat), to have to package them all up, write descriptions for them, post the ad, wait for the bidding time, probably only get a couple of quid for them, send them off, then possiblyl having someone rip me off and claim it wasnt as described.... well I couldnt be bothered and they would be sitting around staring at me while all that was going on. I didnt have the head space to manage it
Secondly I dont think I would have got much for them for the time spent doing it, I work long hours, dont really get a lunchbreak so getting down the post office is a nightmare most of the time, I try to avoid it, its too much hassle

I do still wonder if perhaps I got a couple of quid for each item, perhaps I might have made a few hundred, more so for things never worn, coats etc. But I know it wouldnt be realistic as I woujldnt have done it. They'd still be sat there in bags now.

Elephantswillnever · 09/05/2024 21:27

I’d try and sell stuff over a tenner. So the jacket. I buy a lot on vinted. Generally pay 10% of the original cost of an item give or take. Personally I charity shop/ give away my clothes as can’t be bothered also tend to wear stuff to death so it’s really just kids stuff which can be shunted across to other kids.

Floralnomad · 09/05/2024 21:27

Where we live we get at least 2 charity bags through the door each week and we just donate that way , saves driving it to the charity shop

lpylou · 09/05/2024 21:27

Life is too short for Vinted IMO. High ticket items maybe.

Ask yourself how much you get paid an hour at work and how much time you spend selling something on Vinted. Time is money. We are all time poor, unless out of work!

seven201 · 09/05/2024 21:28

I sold an allsaints with tags leather jacket for about £125 I think, on Vinted. It did take a good few months to sell. I tried selling a few baby bits eg jojo maman Bebe snowsuit for £6 and no one bought it so I now take that kind of thing to the charity shop. So personally I'd suggest doing the things that gain you a decent amount and then you can justify spending it all on Vinted again!

Holidaay · 09/05/2024 21:29

I made £80 in a weekend selling in vinted, felt so good about it until I realised it was 35 packages and in reality, one of the things I sold was bought at £80 and worn once so it was a huge loss and waste of time. I suppose it depends what the money would do for you as to if it’s worth it. If you’re comfortable and the money wouldn’t make much difference then it’s not worth the effort. Do you know any teens keen to make some money? You could give it all to them to sell and agree to go 50/50 on the profits?

HippyKayYay · 09/05/2024 21:29

I made about £400 on Vinted last year after a massive clear out. Sold lots of clothes for very little (£1 or £2) and some stuff for more. Selling low-priced stuff only worth it if you’re doing lots so can do eg weekly runs to drop it off at the parcel shop. For the odd bit here and there it’s not worth the hassle. And I have to be in the mood. Sometimes I just can’t be arsed and charity it.

GU24Mum · 09/05/2024 21:30

I'd sell the good stuff (if you can face it) or take it to the charity shop. For the reset of the stuff, unless it's things the charity shop can definitely sell, I'd probably bundle them up and put them onto Freecycle/Freegle - can be a bit hit and miss but you'll get someone to come and collect them.

JaceLancs · 09/05/2024 21:30

Just give to charity
I used to sell a lot on eBay but struggle to justify it
Ive recently been having a good clear out and took about 50% to charity shop - rest to tip as anything slightly worn or bobbly just won’t sell

Divebar2021 · 09/05/2024 21:31

I’ve previously donated tons and tons due to weight fluctuations. This time Im selling through Vinted and it’s so easy. I try and list a couple of items a day and so far I’ve sold 27 items and have made over £250. I haven’t actually had ridiculous offers and have only really negotiated £2 or £3 off the list price. I wouldn’t bother for items less than £5 though.

Invisimamma · 09/05/2024 21:31

It depends if you need the money or not. Everything I sell on vinted, marketplace or make on topcashback I put aside and it pays towards our holiday, about £1.5k last year.

I will do the charity drop when done with baby things and in the meantime I try to buy as much as possible from the charity shop, so I feel good to use it and hand it back.

AhBiscuits · 09/05/2024 21:33

Charity shop all the way. Ain't no one got time for that.
