Hip pain - help - any experiences welcome

cupofte · 09/05/2024 09:35

I've contacted the GP. I'm waiting for my appointment at the end of the month, in the meantime I thought the wise women of MN may have had something similar and can advise.

For about two months my right hip has been sore on and off.

Some days it's not that noticeable, other days it's worse.

It hurts when I walk/ go up the stairs / especially when I get out of the car. I limp a bit when I first get out of the car as it's very sore. It also hurts and makes me limp a bit when I get up from sitting down. It doesn't really hurt when I'm at rest.

Once I'm up and moving around, the pain is a bit better, but still there. But like I said, it hurts the most when getting out of the car / up from sitting down / out of bed.

Has anyone else had this and knows what it might be ?

Sounds like osteoarthritis. It started in my right hip in exactly the same way when I was about 46. (Especially the getting out of the car bit) When I eventually got xrayed a couple of years later, it showed osteoarthritis in both hips, but actually worse in the left (probably from walking badly) I'm 52 now, and will probably need hip replacement in the next couple of years.

Go to an osteopath first no point waiting on gp appointment.

Oh no really ?? I'm only 38??

I thought maybe it's bursitis?

When I read your post it reminded me of what I was like before I had my hip replacement operation - also my right hip.

With me my problem for a long time was a progressive difficulty in walking. But the pain was more in my leg and I actually was sceptical when they told me it was my hip. By the time I had the operation though I'd had xrays which showed the state of my hip and I believed them. By that time the pain in my hip was excruciating and I could hardly walk at all.

Happy ending: 6 years on from the hip replacement operation I'm pain free and walking brilliantly. Didn't enjoy the recovery period but the eventual outcome has been great

Edited to say I've just seen the update about your age so I really hope your diagnosis is different from mine. I was much older.

Maddy70 · 09/05/2024 09:49

Sounds like bursitis to me. Make an appointment x

Rumors1 · 09/05/2024 09:51

Could be hip bursitis. I have similar pains but also pains down my leg. I have arthritis. It is worse after I sit but gets better with movement. Very painful durin car journeys especially if longer than 35/40 mins. I am 46 and it started when I was about 40.

BigBadBarri · 09/05/2024 09:51

Where is the pain? I get tightness in my hip flexor from sitting down too much, stretching it out and using a foam roller helps a lot

MatildaTheCat · 09/05/2024 09:54

Where is the pain? I have a very long history of hip issues and pain. When the pain is on the outer side of my hip it is almost always muscular. It can be really sore. Trying to lie on my back to sleep helps. If I lie on my side I have a pillow between my legs to keep better alignment.

I also have tearing of the cartilage around both hip joints which can be sporadically very painful, like a stabbing in the groin. Steroid injections are helpful then. I get it done privately as the NHS waits are too long.

There are multiple causes for hip pain and unless you have a congenital issue it’s quite unlikely to be advanced arthritis at your age. However seeing your GP and requesting a referral to a physio would be a sensible first step.

TokyoSushi · 09/05/2024 09:56

I had this, it was from too much/incorrect yoga!

I had to have a course of steroids for something else, an unintended consequence of the steroids is that my hip, which had been terrible for about 3 months, is now as good as new!

Aussieland · 09/05/2024 09:57

Can you directly go to a physiotherapist? They may be able to start you off and if things aren’t settling then GP

cupofte · 09/05/2024 10:02

I just checked the text I got from the GP and the appointment is actually straight with Physiotherapy.

The pain is where the hip bone is and around it. It also feels sore when I press on it. The pain is at the front of the hip bone but also towards the back.

Perimenopause? My first symptom was intermittent, incredibly painful hip! It came and went. Then moved on to wrists, ankles, knees, but bizarrely only ever one joint at a time. I was 39. The joint pain stopped when periods went haywire at 41/42. Bloody hormones!

FranticHare · 09/05/2024 10:21

I've had similar. Dr will likely give you pain killers and send you on your way. Osteopath might be a better fix - they certainly helped me. Was able to claim on work private medical cover too.

And, I am really sorry, I have no idea of your weight, but losing a stone also helped a hell of a lot. It's gone from twinging and hurting every morning, to (almost) leaping out of bed like a gazelle.

GettingStuffed · 09/05/2024 10:26

It sounds like osteoarthritis, which I have been diagnosed with in the past, but my last appointment with a specialist said it was an unstable joint. I have some exercises which really help but losing weight has been my main reason for the hip pain.

Just recently though my hip has been in pain again. The best thing to help with the pain this time was falling over and landing heavily on my hip. I'd not recommend this though.

SnapdragonToadflax · 09/05/2024 10:45

How weird, I have exactly the same and have been debating whether to go to the GP or somewhere else (or just continue to ignore it). I'm 42 and suspect mine is burstitis - it seems to fit all the symptoms and I'm surely too young for advanced osteoarthritis when I've had no hip pain before the last few months.

Getting out of the car is the worst. It's right on the hip bone, on the outside, and doesn't radiate. Somewhere between a dull ache and a sharp stabbing pain when I set my foot down or stand up. It hurts to press on it.

Mine is massively improved by ibuprofen - I usually take some once a day in the morning and that really helps. I suppose I should go to the GP. I'm also quite overweight, so I'm sure losing weight would help. Sigh.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/05/2024 11:02

Could be hip flexor tendonitis. I have it, it’s aggravated by sitting and it feels like bone because of the way it wraps round from the lower back right through to the groin. Hips are big bits of kit and when they hurt, they hurt! I saw a physio for mine, I genuinely thought my bones were crumbling away but no, it was HFT and some gentle stretches and also strengthening of the weak hamstrings, quads, and calf stretching has improved it significantly.

Projectme · 09/05/2024 11:11

Personally, I would go and see a chiropractor whilst waiting to get a GP appointment.

You may have a misalignment in the spine and pain from this can transfer to other areas of your body. For example, my sacroiliac joint (pelvic area) keeps misaligning and this means I experience pain that runs from the joint itself, the side of my hip to the front groin area and down my thigh (prior to seeing the chiropractor, I thought I had bursitis). Worth a try OP but hope it's nothing too serious.

thesugarbumfairy · 09/05/2024 11:12

it could be a lot of things.
For me it was osteoarthritis. It was diagnosed in my knees when I was 32 but actually my knees have stayed about the same. Then at 44 I started getting pain on and off in my right hip. Out of the blue really.
NHS x-rayed and said nothing wrong. Went private for MRI and it confirmed osteoarthritis (and hip dysplasia and a labral tear, and sacroiliitis)
However the only thing that bothered me was my hip. I had it replaced at 48 after a few annual injections that didn't really help.
Edited to add: I did see a physio for a while after NHS didn't help. She was the one who identified that it wasn't a physio thing and suggested I have proper imaging - hence the MRI.

PaintedPottery · 09/05/2024 11:28

Sounds like the pain I’ve had and like others here it’s osteoarthritis. I have a less sedentary job now and that really really helps. I sleep with a pillow between my knees which also helps. I have had the cortisone jabs in the past which helped, but not needed one for about three years now.

Whataretalkingabout · 09/05/2024 11:33

Check out YouTube physical therapists . They show you how to do very specific exercises for different kinds of pain. They are very gentle. Often hip pain is because of too much sitting, not enough daily walking , and you need to strengthen your butt muscles ! I'm much older than you and this has stopped all my hip pain problems.

HTH ;)

SnakesAndArrows · 09/05/2024 11:34

By hip bone, do you mean the outer part, sort of below your waist and towards your outer thigh, or more groin area where your thigh bone attaches? If it’s the former it’s more likely to be muscular/tendon related than joint/osteoarthritis related.

CCLCECSC · 09/05/2024 11:39

Another recommendation for osteopathy. I've had hip problems for years. Initially went via physio and didn't help. Osteopathy marked improvement within 2 sessions.

Pickled21 · 09/05/2024 11:45

I had pgp when I had my dd1 at 29. The hip pain came back at 31. I was referred to physio and alongside loosing weight the exercises I was given made a world of difference. Hopefully physio will help you too. Mine does flare up now and gain (37 now) but the exercises do help and its always a sign for me that I need to watch my weight.
