Hip pain - help - any experiences welcome

I've contacted the GP. I'm waiting for my appointment at the end of the month, in the meantime I thought the wise women of MN may have had something similar and can advise.

For about two months my right hip has been sore on and off.

Some days it's not that noticeable, other days it's worse.

It hurts when I walk/ go up the stairs / especially when I get out of the car. I limp a bit when I first get out of the car as it's very sore. It also hurts and makes me limp a bit when I get up from sitting down. It doesn't really hurt when I'm at rest.

Once I'm up and moving around, the pain is a bit better, but still there. But like I said, it hurts the most when getting out of the car / up from sitting down / out of bed.

Has anyone else had this and knows what it might be ?

Just as another thing I just unfortunately noticed.

I thought it wasn't extremely painful today.

I was sitting in a chair with sides all the way around it and I turned around and accidentally bumped my hip against it while sitting and it was excruciating.

It's like my hip bone is bruised.

I am being treated for hip pain by a sports Physio who has given me amazing exercises that are making a massive difference.
Everybody said to me "it's arthritis" as if they would know - but X rays showed it wasn't.
If you get offered exercises then do them religiously and precisely - they have made an incredible difference to me.
Osteopathy was good too but this sports Physio is incredible.

Exactly the same as me op! I've diagnosed myself with hip bursitis, as my symptoms seem spot on to the descriptions online. I will of course make a GP appointment too. I'm a little older than you, in my forties. I do a LOT of walking, if that has any impact.

Hip Bursitis most likely. Grapple with this one on and off - I’m 49 & peri.

Osteo to ease it, physio to fix it.

You’ll need to do strength exercises to manage and prevent reoccurrence. Nip in the bud now before you hit your 40s!

in the meantime, ibuprofen and ice.

I had pgp when I had my dd1 at 29. The hip pain came back at 31. I was referred to physio and alongside loosing weight the exercises I was given made a world of difference. Hopefully physio will help you too. Mine does flare up now and gain (37 now) but the exercises do help and its always a sign for me that I need to watch my weight.

I think hormonal weight gain has impacted mine - your comment really resonated <steps away from the cake>

At your age, it's more likely to be muscle weakness/imbalance and posture than osteoarthritis. With a side of possible vitamin D deficiency, as pain is one of the big indicators of that.

I've had autoimmune disease since infancy, was obese for years, on steroids for decades, overdo the exercise and working, had a particularly spectacular accident that resulted in some cartilage damage, and did have severe vitamin d deficiency, but despite all this and being 51, my hips are perfectly healthy and there isn't any sign of arthritis, degeneration or reduced density.

What caused the pain was weakened/uneven musculature due to a shit chair at work and a need to wear orthotics for posture - with high dose vitamin d, a bit of physio and the orthotics (plus a new mattress as mine was 22 years old), it's all back to normal again.

Don't be palmed off with 'it's your age, dear, you'll probably need a hip replacement eventually' - look to immediate and mid term factors that can be resolved first, as they're far more likely than wear and tear when you're so young.

I play a lot of tennis. Which I guess is pretty right side heavy, which is also where the pain is. Maybe that's what's causing it.

I was diagnosed with bursitis at the age of 30. I struggled on with it for over a decade and eventually went back and saw a different GP about it. This GP referred me to a physio who said it's actually tendonitis. She gave me some exercises and also told me what to avoid (sitting cross legged and standing with my weight on one leg).
She also recommended sleeping with a memory foam knee pillow between my knees to keep the hips aligned. (I got one for about £9 on ebay). This was the most helpful advice she gave. I rarely struggle with my hip now, and I only get problems if I don't use my knee pillow for a week or more at a time.

If pain is on the outer aspect of hip and if painful to lie on it sounds like bursitis. I have it and taking naproxen.
Osteoarthritis is often groin pain and worse after sitting down for a while.

SomeonTookMyAnonymousUserName · 09/05/2024 17:03

This sounds similar to how my osteoarthritis started - at age 28!

By 40 I had my first THR and second at 45.

You must get an xray as soon as possible, even if just to rule it out.

ChaoticCrumble · 09/05/2024 19:46

I get hip pain now and then (am 44). For me the symptoms are closer to bursitis - as well as the pain I can feel from the outside, it is worse when I sit or stand for a while. Arthritis I believe is more often felt as pain when you get up. In April I had one week where I was in pain whatever I did - sitting, standing, lying.

However I believe mine may be due to weak muscles around my hips - I wfh and have to drive kids to school (would be over an hour walk) so can be very sedentary unless I make a real effort to exercise. I am sat in a seated position far too often which creates short muscles (if I remember correctly, something like that). I've been doing more stretches and it's helped me quite a bit.
