To be pissed off that Boots wouldn't sell me Nytol?

I went to Boots today to buy some Nytol. The shop assistant asked me when I had last taken some. I said, a few weeks ago. She refused to sell it to me and said that they could only sell it to someone every 6 months! I've never heard that before when I've bought it previously. When I asked why, she said it's because it's addictive. I am definitely not addicted to it, my sleep has got pretty bad since menopause, and Nytol is one thing that helps me fall asleep. I only use it occasionally.

Was she right to say this? I'm really confused...

Nytol never worked for me either!

Yeah it doesn’t work for everyone.

Molone · 08/05/2024 22:04

It’s not recommended to take Nytol frequently as your body can become reliant on it actually making it harder to fall asleep.
I’ve never heard of a six month rule though. Where I worked in the past we would just advise against long term use but we never refused a sale as far as I know.
it is however a P med so the pharmacist can choose to refuse to sell it for any reason they see fit.

Ugh…..Boots. Tried buying Night Nurse there recently for my Covid symptoms - was refused initially because when asked what it was for I said ‘Covid virus’ causing coughing and other issues at night. The assistant said ‘well I can’t give it to you for that because Night Nurse isn’t used to treat viruses’. WTAF! 🤷🏻‍♀️
Thankfully, I was so outraged I managed despite feeling poorly, to stand my ground.
It’s utterly ridiculous.

I was more annoyed when they stopped making tyrozets!

Me too and Frador for mouth ulcers!

What do you call 'strong painkillers' - opiates? You do realise they are highly addictive, and have really serious side effects. Do you drive?

As for antibiotics, I am sure you know that more and more people are getting resistant due to over use and self medication. Antibiotics have had such an amazing effect on so many diseases- if they stop to work, due to overuse and resistance, we are all in VERY VERY SERIOUS TROUBLE.

This. Some people don't seem to have a brain in their heads!

Why didn’t you buy nytol ?

Cos it was cheaper! And I hoped I wouldn't get the same grilling as I'd got trying to buy Nytol...

I’m not sure if you become reliant on it but you certainly build up a tolerance to it so it becomes less effective if used too frequently.

I’m a bit like @Youdontevengohere in that I’ve had chronic insomnia for decades and I’ve tried everything under the sun for it. I had some limited success with amitriptyline but that only helped for a couple of weeks. The problem with sedating antihistamines for me is that I do sleep but my brain fights it so I wake frequently. It’s better than days of no sleep though. Melatonin works to help me drop off but I don’t stay asleep very long.

Daridorexant works differently and it’s really surprised me. It’s worth exploring for chronic insomnia sufferers.

What is a P med?

Prescribed? Prohibited?

Is Nytol similar to Panadol Night? But without the paracetamol?

Appalonia · 08/05/2024 22:19

It's funny, the only thing that's ever guaranteed me a good night's sleep is hot, passionate sex. Shame you can't get that on the NHS...😂😁😜

Yes

buffyslayer · 08/05/2024 22:31

I take Kirkland sleep aid

Used to be able to get sleeping tablets. When my mum died, they reluctantly gave me 3 tablets. I did ask who had to die so I could have a weeks worth Blush

Amitriptyline sometimes works for me too, but I definitely build up a tolerance to it. I will look into Daridorexant, thank you.

This. Some people don't seem to have a brain in their heads!

On the News again tonight, as the biggest threat to mankind. And people just say 'nanny state'! It is hugely worrying.

HangingOver · 08/05/2024 22:43

I stock up abroad too. For some reason you can buy diclofenac over the counter in Australia.

Nonsense - i do the same with paracetamol i bring it from Spain and my friend brings me big bottles of tylenol and melatonin from texas. Our regulations are nothing short of stupid

Paracetamol rules has saved many lives, sorry for the inconvenience.

My Gp prescribed phenergan. It didn't make me fall asleep. However, the next morning I'm so drowsy I can't keep my eyes open. So it works but not until the next morning. Did anyone else experience this?

You have to take it early (~ 7pm) in order to actually work at night. Also avoids the ‘zombie’ feeling the next morning

Nat6999 · 09/05/2024 01:21

Get some Melatonin or CBD gummies, you can buy both online.

Nat6999 · 09/05/2024 01:25

Buy phenergan & say it is for menopausal night time itching, that's what I told the pharmacy when I was using it, I just said my GP had recommended it. Never had a problem buying it.

Paninaro94 · 09/05/2024 01:43

Last time I was in the UK, Boots refused to sell me a Canestan tablet because my answer to their question of when I last had it was “ooh, I don’t remember, at least ten years ago” but because I had said I did not remember (it was just a turn of phrase to give me some time to think) I was not allowed to buy. I bought half a dozen on Amazon.co.uk to keep in just in case (you can’t buy them OTC in the US)

As for all these tablets you can buy abroad, are you sure they’re not fakes? Lots of people here order from Mexico to avoid high prescription charges and a lot of the time it’s pill-shaped nothings.

bluetopazlove · 09/05/2024 02:28

I think that may be because thrush may be mistaken for atrophy past a certain age .

Scintella · 09/05/2024 02:30

Sominex is now promethazine, it used to be diphenhydramine , not sure what nytol is now, you can buy promethazine tablets online -I think it’s considered a travel sickness pill. Mind you I use duck duck go as a search engine and it seems to have less controls than google

ManyATrueWord · 09/05/2024 06:36

Some pharmacist assistant refused to sell me a thrush tablet and thrush cream at the same time. They didn't have a combi back. They don't always know what they are doing.
