Hi - posting for traffic. What can i do about this? Royal Mail have left the parcel in the bin, and no card so i didnt know it was there. The bins have now been taken. Do i go back to sender about this or is it a RM issue? How can i get my money back?

You raise it with the sender and they will be able raise it with Royal Mail. It should all be covered as long as you have not set the bin as your 'safe place' in the past.

Mumof1andacat · 08/05/2024 12:12

How do you know the parcel was in bin if they didn't leave a card?

@Mumof1andacat i saw it just now on my ring doorbell footage. I never checked it before but checked with sender today who said it had shown as delivered. Then i frantically checked the footage and saw it had been placed in the bin.

Sender should be able to offer a refund or replacement. Happened to me with something from sports direct. Evri courier put the item in my recycling bin which was on the bloody kerb side for collection. I saw the delivered email and a photo of my parcel in the bin on my lunch break, the bin had obviously been emptied by the time I got home. Sports direct sent me a replacement. You think it would be common sense that bins are not safe places.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 08/05/2024 12:36

It is the sender's responsibility to chase with RM

You contact them and tell them what happened and they should arrange a refund/replacement and go to RM to claim back

Mothership4two · 08/05/2024 13:16

Had similar a few years ago where our postie put parcels in our recycling bin. We had several go astray and were chasing up refunds, etc. I then found one in the bin (when it was quite full) and realised what had been happening. I couldn't believe someone would put a parcel in a bin.

The responsibility for it lies with the sender.

Caroparo52 · 08/05/2024 13:37

You didn't receive it... not cour responsibility. Royal Mail cock up.

JanglyBeads · 08/05/2024 19:42

Yeah, couldn't believe it yesterday when I found my DD's Glossybox subscription box put into the grey bin on top of a nearly bursting food waste bag. Lovely.

Nw22 · 08/05/2024 19:46

All the delivery companies do that here. I’ve lost a few parcels and had some ruined by being out in the food waste bin

Lancrelady80 · 08/05/2024 20:44

All the above advice is correct. But I would put a complaint in to your local delivery office too - clearly that postie needs retraining!

StripeySoc · 08/05/2024 20:54

Royal Mail where I live would never do that they just pop a note through the door saying they'll redeliver the next day and if that fails we have to collect from the local depot

Which is fine by me

Amazon will stick it in under my recycling bin by my front door not on the street or in a bin and tend to come later when someone's at home

Evri and whoever else tend to do what they want but manage the recycling bin most of the time

theeyeofdoe · 08/05/2024 20:56

Seller legally is responsible for the item arriving. Contact them and get them to sort it out.

StripeySoc · 08/05/2024 20:57

I do think that it must be really annoying for delivery drivers when people insist on getting items delivered knowing that they're not going to be home

I mean let's face it either be home or don't get items delivered when you're not going to be in

And if that's the case stop bloody complaining about it

StripeySoc · 08/05/2024 20:59

Leave a sign saying please put item under or in this box please in a place someone can actually read the sign

StripeySoc · 08/05/2024 21:00

As for the OP

Where were you expecting them to leave your package

Did you make it clear and very very obvious to someone whose never been to your house in the dark or rain etc etc

How are they meant to know if you're not bothering to be at home

Or providing with a clear safe space to drop the parcels. Get a parcel bin and ask them to use that!

I don't always know when a parcel is coming though. Or its bloody sods law they turn up when I pop out for milk having sent me a "it will be delivered by 10pm" message.

Quite a few don't bother to wait long enough to find out if you're home - they dump the parcel on the doorstep, ring the bell and scarper instantly.

StripeySoc · 08/05/2024 21:26

@maximist yes that's true and as annoying as that is I'll have heard the knock or bell and when I open the door a minute later I can still pick it up from my doorstep or wherever

StripeySoc · 08/05/2024 21:27

@QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse yes but then just leave a note saying I'll be back in a minute leave it under the box or whatever

FortyFacedFuckers · 08/05/2024 21:30

I have this with ASOS/DPD years ago, I had ordered over £300 worth of holiday clothes and they weren't delivered until I was on holiday & they left it in one of my bins & a kind neighbour knew we were on holiday for a fortnight and put the bins out, I genuinely spend months going between DPD & ASOS and getting absolutely nowhere, then a colleague suggested I contact my bank and they refunded me within a day or 2 and disputed it with ASOS

We get parcels delivered when we're out sometimes - after all with a 2-5 day window and deliveries being between eg 7am and 10pm if could happen unless you declare yourself housebound for a few days. We just get them left in our mail box. But I certainly would complain at parcels left in the bin!

Eh? You think the delivery driver has time to wait for me to come home? Or that he'll see a note under something else? What about the deliveries when you don't even know what day they are coming?
For example, my friend posted a parcel to me yesterday. I have no idea when it will be here. Anything from tomorrow to a week if previous deliveries are Anything to go by. Should I stay at home indefinitely? Or advertise everytime my house will be empty for 30 mins?

Or, and its obviously a wild idea, perhaps the delivery people could just not put parcels in a bin!

neilyoungismyhero · 08/05/2024 21:35

I did a bit of couriering for Hermes a few years ago. It was a ruddy nightmare. People weren't in and no information about leaving the parcel so you either had to leave it somewhere that was hopefully safe or leave a card and return hoping they'd then be in then. It was ridiculous especially for the money you got paid. If you have a lot of parcels delivered as lots of people do now you should have a locked parcel box or advise where to leave the items.

So we just order things online and then wait in for 3-5 business days? Are we allowed to do the school run?
